Have you heard of Harriet Tubman?

It's in the news that she's going to be on $20 bills. I'm ashamed to say I've only just learned about her! I knew the name from an American picture book I had when I was little, but all I knew was that she 'helped to free the slaves'. Then at Christmas just gone I watched the film 'Harriet' (I recommend it!) and although I don't know how much of the movie was artistic license, the facts of her story I know to be true are amazing.

Do you know about her? If so, how? Were you taught at school?

Yes, of course! I can't remember not knowing about her. I was a huge reader as a child so I assume I picked up the knowledge through reading.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 26/01/2021 17:03

I learned about her a few years ago when I began educating myself on all the stuff you don't learn in school.

I bought my 3 and 5 year old the kids book about her (as well as other books about inspirational people).

Clymene · 26/01/2021 17:04

Yes but I can't remember where or how. Internet probably

Just recently read about her.

Harmarsuperstar · 26/01/2021 17:06

The underground railroad woman?
I've heard of her but know hardly any details, would like to know more about her

shivermetimbers77 · 26/01/2021 17:07

I learned about her last year when I read the Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead (amazing book by the way!) and then did a bit of digging around Wikipedia . Was a bit ashamed I had never learned of her before.

skippy67 · 26/01/2021 17:46

Yes. We were taught about her in school, back in the 80s. We had a black drama teacher, and I remember her talking about her.

truebeliever · 26/01/2021 17:52

I've only learnt about her in the last two weeks as I'm teaching my class to write a biography and she is the subject of their writing. She was amazing and my y5/6 children are fascinated by her.

Buttybach · 26/01/2021 17:54

Yes I know who she is x
I am a big lover of history though.

Buttybach · 26/01/2021 17:54

I work in education and over the last few years there have been a lot of books in the library about her x

CMOTDibbler · 26/01/2021 17:55

Yes, amazing woman. I've just been reading a book about how quilts were made which contained hidden codes to guide escaping slaves along the underground railroad which was fascinating

Gilead · 26/01/2021 17:56

Yes, from childhood and I’m in my sixties!

TheOneLeggedJockey · 26/01/2021 17:56

Yes I know who she is. I can’t remember when or how I learnt about her - lost in the mists of time.

An important person, and hugely worthy of being on an American note.

80sMum · 26/01/2021 17:57

Yes, I most certainly have! I learned about her from a book of "true stories for girls" about heroic women in history that I read when I was about 8, in the mid '60s.

I think most Americans will have heard of her, in particular the African Americans or "people of colour", as I think they now prefer to be called.

Veterinari · 26/01/2021 17:57

Are there any documentaries/ films anyone can recommend please?

Horehound · 26/01/2021 17:59

Never heard of her. Off to Google

BikeRunSki · 26/01/2021 17:59

Yes, but only learnt about her a few years ago, ftom following “A Mighty Girl” fb feed.

Katinthedoghouse · 26/01/2021 17:59

Yes. There’s a great podcast about her life... you’re dead to me... on bbc sounds. Half an hour of your life and your will be amazed.

How do we watch the film OP ?

KarensChoppyBob · 26/01/2021 18:01

The film is on Sky Cinema channel or I think you can also rent it.

PamsterWheel · 26/01/2021 18:04

Yes (no 'of course' EXCLAMATION MARK required)

Only because of my daughter learning about her in school. I wasn't taught it in school (am late 40s).

omg35 · 26/01/2021 18:04

Yes, but only cos DD9 has been learning about her in school and told us so we watched the film

ISBN111 · 26/01/2021 18:05

I learned about her from the folksong of her name.
@CMOTDibbler what book is that? Sounds interesting!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 26/01/2021 18:06

Yes. But only vaguely and mostly due to publicity of the film last year

Pickles89 · 26/01/2021 18:07

This is the film I watched.

www.amazon.co.uk/Harriet-Joe-Alwyn/dp/B081FZN6LJ/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=harriet&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1611684330&sr=8-3

Although I had it for years on good old fashioned DVD, just never got round to watching it before! I really recommend you DON'T watch the trailer, as that's just the whole darn film condensed - just take my word for it that it's worth paying for if you can't find it free online. Incredible woman.
