Have you heard of Harriet Tubman?

It's in the news that she's going to be on $20 bills. I'm ashamed to say I've only just learned about her! I knew the name from an American picture book I had when I was little, but all I knew was that she 'helped to free the slaves'. Then at Christmas just gone I watched the film 'Harriet' (I recommend it!) and although I don't know how much of the movie was artistic license, the facts of her story I know to be true are amazing.

Do you know about her? If so, how? Were you taught at school?

It's great to see she's so well known outside the US! I'm American and of course learned about her in school.

It's also great that she's replacing Andrew Jackson, who was really quite evil.

A number of black American feminists are not crazy about it though, I think they have a good point:

Yes I've heard of her, but embarrassingly only from my DD watching Horrible Histories. I'll probably watch a couple of the things mentioned above now though, so thanks to those that posted them.

Yes, though only relatively recently through the Rebel Girls books.

That series was so interesting, have you seen David Olusoga's series following a house through history, series 3 is on iplayer and is about a house in Bristol so very connected to the slave trade, very interesting.

There's a book of the Black and British series including a young person's version - aimed at 12+.

Yes. There’s a great podcast about her life... you’re dead to me... on bbc sounds. Half an hour of your life and your will be amazed.

How do we watch the film OP ?

Agree with this. Was really good
