Without goady fuckers spoiling all the niceness.
I vote seaside fish and chips.

I think many Brits don't appreciate how highly respected the BBC is around the world, especially BBC news.

Our legal system, on which many other countries based their own.

Street fashion and the different 'tribes' - doesn't exist in the same way in other European countries.

Theatre, dance, literature, music of all genres.

Sense of decency and tolerance of eccentricity.

Ancient hedgerows - make our countryside unique, provide habitats for so much wildlife.

Cottage gardens (in fact English gardens in general)

The English language, now a global language, we're incredibly lucky to have it as our first language.

British universities - respected around the world.

British inventions - too many to list

Country churches, dry-stone walls, tea-rooms, picnics, cricket on the village green, bluebell woods, chalk downland, sweet peas, allotments,
But also, the London Underground, free museums and art galleries, vast range of cuisines from different cultures, the way London is a patchwork of villages.

British TV - only appreciated how good it is when I lived abroad.

The last night of the proms! Barking mad and utterly eccentric!

Labobo · 24/01/2021 23:25

Christmas! We do Christmas so well. I had no idea how many customs we had surrounding Christmas until an Indian friend asked me about the tree and the nativity and the food and the stockings and Santa.

Whatamesssss · 24/01/2021 23:27

The many many inventions that changed the world and the eccentric people who invented them.

The beautiful buildings and the history.

Sunday roast with a special mention for the mighty Roast Potatoes.

Scones, so easy and quick to make and so delicious. Obviously the cream goes on first as otherwise the jam leaks into the scone!

Fish and chips , british humour and regional accents and even different words.
Its why I like travelling to experience other cultures as we all have slighlty different ways which is great.

@niynycachu pretty sure they drink tea im scotland , wales and cornwall and eat fish and chips!!
Regional accents also apply as does apple crumble and custard.
But if it makes you feel better I love a cornish pasty and the proper job accent, when in wales Im pretty partial to a welshcake.

Nomnomarrgh · 24/01/2021 23:56

Me and my boyfriend got to listen to the proms practising outside in Liverpool once. Absolutely amazing.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 24/01/2021 23:58

@niynycachu also it was requested lets have a nice thread about what we like about british culture etc , why does someone always have to then post a negative if you don't want to join in , scroll on by.
But the post has many contributions from all nationalities who are taking the post for what it is , a bit of light hearted fun.

Bekilted · 25/01/2021 00:34

Hm odd pile on. Assuming snarky posters weren't on the previous thread.
Just because I don't think of myself as British does not mean I don't see the positive things for people who do. Who would've guessed that earns you rude responses these days. Oh well!

Anyway, @Gobbeldegook I hope you feel better after reviving a much nicer thread than the last one! Lots of things here clearly disproving that OPs "point"!

SnoozyLou · 25/01/2021 00:35

Oh god, you've just reminded me. I went to see the changing of the guard once at Buckingham Palace. They played Soul Bossa Nova (Austin Powers was massive at the time). Talk about sending yourself up - it was brilliant. That made me genuinely proud.

JingsMahBucket · 25/01/2021 01:25

@JaneJeffer I know...I know. I thought the same thing. 😂

lightand · 25/01/2021 01:55

Gosh, so many things on this thread that I have just taken for granted.

Nomnomarrgh · 25/01/2021 03:00

I do miss fish and chips in newspaper.

Its a nice place to live. I like it here and think it would be dreadful if we couldn’t all spend hours moaning about everything that is bad about here.

KingscoteStaff · 25/01/2021 03:10

The BBC. Something quite extraordinary and world-admired.

Club cricket, club rugby and their social opportunities.
