What's lurking at the back of your freezer, will never get eaten but you can't bring yourself to sling it?

Inspired by the batch-cooking thread.

So I'll start...two big, whole sea bass completely with eyes, bones and scales , they've been in there for months and neither DH nor I feels up to the task of preparing them. Every time we inventory the freezer, they're there glaring reproachfully at us. They're too expensive to throw out, and we would actually enjoy them if we did something with them. So there they stay.

What's living rent-free in your freezer?

OH has got these bloody bags of frozen berries that are taking up so much space but that we can't throw out as he is apparently making smoothies with them. He hasn't made a single smoothie.

@natalienewname

Two pheasants.

Every so often I look up a recipe and never get any further than reading, then a shudder, and they remain in their frosty limbo

I came on to say the same thing. Four pheasant breasts, frozen solid, waiting to be casseroled. Somewhen. Been in there two years now....

@ WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo. Thanks for the recommendation, will dig them out tomorrow for lunch. 👍🏼

2 little lamb chops. Too small for a meal, and I'm not really a mixed grill kind of girl...

Kumquatsquash · 24/01/2021 20:08

@Narniacalling

The pheasants you could list make a really good stock from! I did that found some random small birds and turned it into stock.
By "found some random small birds" do you mean you picked up dead sparrows and Robins off the ground and made soup with them? If so I'm impressed with your survivor skills.
Kumquatsquash · 24/01/2021 20:11

I have about 4 separate lumps of frozen pizza dough wrapped in clingfilm. I use the Jamie Oliver pizza dough recipe that is enough for 8 pizzas so make 1 or 2 then freeze the rest. Tgen next time I always forget to defrost the ready made dough so make another fresh one, and another one, and another one. It's never occurred to me to only make enough for what I need.

justthecat · 24/01/2021 20:13

Why is there so much quorn mince? I’ve never tried before and got a three for £5 tmrw Asda delivery because I want to cut down on meat - fool the family- 😬 is it any good ?

sadpapercourtesan · 24/01/2021 20:15

@justthecat nah, it tastes of nothing Grin

We tried to like it, it's high-protein and low-calorie...but nope, it just tastes of dust.

Off to amend my order , thanks 😂

VettiyaIruken · 24/01/2021 20:17

I have a pack of soya beans that has outlived two freezers.

I’m in Cumbria, anyone want to swap me for several tubs of (really quite tasty) stewed oxtail?

MooominMamma · 24/01/2021 20:21

The last mincemeat slice from the last batch that my nan made before she died. She's been gone 10 years now. I obviously have no intention of ever eating it, I also have no intention of throwing it away.

LubaLuca · 24/01/2021 20:24

The tail ends of two one litre tubs of ice cream. They'll never be eaten, and they're taking up too much space.

I think I'll put them straight in the wheelie bin tomorrow. But what if someone wants a thick milkshake for the first time ever this week...?

toomuchfaster · 24/01/2021 20:26

Some pear sorbet I made in the summer. It's nice but we haven't got round to eating yet. Some chopped cabbage. DH and DD don't like it and I haven't had a meal to myself to eat it in months!!

BeeFarseer · 24/01/2021 20:28

Some pieces of kanellängd (Swedish cinnamon roll thingy) that I brought back from a pre-pandemic trip with friends.

I can't bear to throw it away. It reminds me of happier times, and I'm going to keep it until I can go back and replace it with fresh pieces.

NewCatMummy · 24/01/2021 20:28

5lb blackcurrants. 5 ish years old. A rabbit (jointed, bought from a game supplier, not pet). Some vegan butternut macaroni that was free from Tesco because no one wanted it.

SkaterGrrrrl · 24/01/2021 20:30

Vegetarian sausages... My daughter's bestie is Hindu and one day when lockdown ends, she will be able to come back for playdates again!

Kljnmw3459 · 24/01/2021 20:31

Not freezer but fridge. The only thing we've got that isn't being used are 2 jars of mincemeat for mince pies. We got them about 5 years ago....

SkaterGrrrrl · 24/01/2021 20:32

5 years NewCatMummy?!

It's a freezer not s time machine!

YerAWizardHarry · 24/01/2021 20:33

Steaks that were bought from my ex employer on the cheap when the first proper lockdown was implemented. They're definitely freezer burnt but seems mental to throw away £40 worth of fillet steak

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/01/2021 20:33

Nothing.

But only because we got a new, larger freezer in an effort to be more organised this CHristmas and to be able to stock up and usef that as an excuse to bin old boxes of fruit from our garden and anything that might have freezer burn or be a bit past it.

You can make crumble with them 😀
Wildernesstips · 24/01/2021 20:53

Marinated tofu and sausage tortellini. I might challenge myself to dispatch these one way or another this week.

I love having berries and cabbage in the freezer.
