Oven has died - can I finish the cake on the hob?

A Victoria sponge is half baked. Could I put the cake tin onto a griddle pan and would that cook the inside? Its brown enough on the top but still pretty raw in the middle.

Worth a try. I’ve never done it but am curious to know what happens.

CrumbsThatsQuick · 24/01/2021 17:00

Or steam it maybe? More pudding?

RaininSummer · 24/01/2021 17:00

Microwave it.

Slow cooker would work if you have one

linerforlife · 24/01/2021 17:02

Not directly. The cake pan cant be sitting on a direct heat.

You need a very big pot, and a steamer tray which fits inside the pot as has legs (or will sit over the rim of the pot so it iant touching the bottom). Put some water in the big pot, some dried beans on the steamer tray and then put the cake tin on the dried beans ans cover with the pot lid.

Woodlandbelle · 24/01/2021 17:02

Grin good luck

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 24/01/2021 17:03

What you've done is just going to apply direct heat to the bottom of the cake tin and the bottom of your cake is going to burn. The inside wont cook before the burning starts.

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/01/2021 17:03

I'd microwave it.

bellagogosdead · 24/01/2021 17:04

Microwave would work.
Or put the tin over a pan of simmering water with a lid on.

monkeysonthemoon · 24/01/2021 17:04

Do you have a gas barbecue? It might work off the direct heat and with the lid down.

Blankiefan · 24/01/2021 17:04

I don't have a pot big enough... microwave next I think

OP posts:
Muffinbutton · 24/01/2021 17:05

Can you put foil over it to keep the heat in?

monkeysonthemoon · 24/01/2021 17:06

Don't microwave it - the pan is metal!!

Blankiefan · 24/01/2021 17:07

How long do I microwave it for?

OP posts:
WhereverIGoddamnLike · 24/01/2021 17:07

Microwave cake needs to be done in a ceramic pot or cup or something.
Do not microwave your cake tin.

Blankiefan · 24/01/2021 17:07

I took it out of the tin....

Blankiefan · 24/01/2021 17:09

Thank god.

A microwave cake takes about 10 minutes. Tey yours at 2/3 minutes intervals.

Blankiefan · 24/01/2021 17:09

Luckily it was probably about 80% done so it has some structural integrity - just goes inside. Any idea of how long to microwave it for?

Didicat · 24/01/2021 17:10

Plate will be fine, mug cake only takes 2 minutes.... I would say do it in short bursts

picklemewalnuts · 24/01/2021 17:10

Yes, 30secs at a time.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 24/01/2021 17:14

Oh, if it's so close to being done then short bursts it is.

Blankiefan · 24/01/2021 17:16

At ease Mumsnet - the cake is saved.

Thank you all - I wouldn't have thought of microwaving it.

The Blankies will eat cake tonight. Phew.
