Son dry over night at 2.5?

LivingMyBestLife2020 · 23/01/2021 14:52

Is this too soon or just a fluke?

He potty trained at 2 years 3 months and took to it great. Only two accidents in the first couple of days and he can hold his bladder so well (much better than I can!)

He wears pull ups at night and uses the toilet before bed and first thing in the morning but his pull up was always pretty wet.

Today is the 7th day in a row he’s been dry all night. He wakes about 6am, takes off his pull up and uses the potty in his room. His pull ups are completely dry.

He dislikes the pull ups but it seems to soon to be trying him without? I don’t want endless rounds of laundry but if he continues to stay dry, would you try him without? He was 2.5 on 13th January.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like he's dry at night, yay!

My son was younger for dryness at night but took longer for absolute day dryness.

FinallyFluid · 23/01/2021 14:54

My son was dry around that age.

happytoday73 · 23/01/2021 14:55

My son was similar... dry at night pretty much same time as potty trained in day. He was 2 years 8 months at time. He rarely wet the bed from then on... Only if ill or tired...

So sounds like you can try without.

Yes definitely go without. I'd have a mattress protector on anyway. Don't make a big fuss if it, just don't put it on.

If you leave him in pull ups when he doesn't need them he's more likely to regress because it's easier & once they're seeing in nappies because it's easier that's much harder to get them
Out of the habit.

FinallyFluid · 23/01/2021 14:56

He too hated the pull ups, so we put him in underpants and explained he would need to wear pull ups if they didn't work.

He took the pull up, put on window sill and said "my no do ups" Grin and that was the end of that.

cheeseismydownfall · 23/01/2021 14:56

Sounds like he is to me - definitely not to young. Mine were dry overnight ranging from something like two years and a couple of months through to nearly four.

BikeRunSki · 23/01/2021 14:56

DS was dry at night at 2y 8m, DD was 2y 4m, so ime it is completely possible.

LivingMyBestLife2020 · 23/01/2021 14:56

Thank you. Good old google say 3-4 years so I thought I’d get some actual experiences.

I’ll give it a few more days and see if it continues.

Part of me doesn’t want to lose my ‘baby’ just yet

My younger two were reliably night dry before they were dry all day (just over 2 in both cases). I think night dryness is a separate issue which depends more on anti-diuretic hormone production.

statetrooperstacey · 23/01/2021 14:57

I know quite a few children who were dry at night by 2. My eldest dd was dry day and night at just turned 2. So yes it’s very possible, well done! ( my others all wet the bed till about age 9🙄)

LivingMyBestLife2020 · 23/01/2021 14:58

Plus I need a proper mattress protector. I have a ‘waterproof’ one but I don’t reckon it could handle a full wee. I’m on the case now.

Thank you all

He could be a fast learner! Once mine said no to nappies at night that was it! You could be lucky mama!

Doveyouknow · 23/01/2021 15:01

One of mine was dry at night at this age, the other was much later...

SillyBub · 23/01/2021 15:01

DD was dry at night at 18 months. It was more than a year before she was potty trained. She did however like to fill her nappy as soon as she woke in the morning so until that stopped, she kept a nappy on!

I felt lucky with potty training. He practically did it all himself. I’d been dreading it before we started but it just seemed to happen.

I’ll see how he goes tonight and if he’s dry I’ll try Sunday night without 😳

My son was dry at night for 3m before I was brave enough to remove the pull up 🤣

Get a mattress protector with the plastic underneath so the liquid won’t leak through to mattress. Then out normal protector over the top of that as otherwise it’s a bit ‘crunchy’

DietrichandDiMaggio · 23/01/2021 15:04

We used to put a nappy on my son (who was dry in the day) just before bedtime, but one night when he was 2 1/2 we forgot. We realised when we went to bed, but didn't want to wake him to put a nappy on, so managed to put a towel under him without disturbing him. He slept through and was dry in the morning, so we ditched the night time nappies.

DoodleLovin · 23/01/2021 15:04

For the waterproof pad, I used puppy training pads 😬 just popped them under the sheet and voila!

BettyOBarley · 23/01/2021 15:10

No not too early!
My DD was dry night & day at 2.5.
My DS is 4.5 and still not dry at night.

cautiouscovidity · 23/01/2021 15:10

DS was dry at night by 2 yrs 3 months. He was potty trained at 2 yrs exactly (fully successful within 1 week).
To be honest, he probably would've been ok overnight earlier but we still had him in a cot until we moved house and he couldn't get up in the night to use the loo independently so we kept him in nappies overnight for a few week longer.
DD was dry overnight within a month or so of potty training too (similar age to DS).

cautiouscovidity · 23/01/2021 15:14

If he's been dry for a week, he's ready. There will almost definitely be the odd accident but if you leave him with a pull up, he will learn that it's more convenient to lie in a warm bed and pee than get up to use the loo (either during the night or as soon as he wakes). 2.5 year olds generally don't have the mental capacity to think like this, 3-4 year olds do (which is why they take longer to train).

CoffeeRunner · 23/01/2021 15:19

Yay!

My DS2 was the same. He was dry at night from about the same time as in the day. We’d put him to bed with a nappy on & then find him climbing out of bed, taking the nappy off & walking to the toilet Grin.

On the other hand DS1 was about 9 before he stopped needing Pull Ups & DD was about 6. Both have ASD though.

foxhat · 23/01/2021 15:27

My DD was dry at night a little before that. My DS was at 8 (years, not months). Ignore the books and follow the child's lead I'd say!

LivingMyBestLife2020 · 23/01/2021 17:15

I’ve not been able to get a proper waterproof mattress protector today so I’m going to ask him if he wants a pull up tonight. If he says no I’m going to just go for it. Otherwise I’ll wait for tomorrow and find a mattress protector.

I feel really odd about it. Like my baby has gone

My DS was dry day and night by 3. Once he twigged that was it! He screamed bloody murder at nappies or pull ups so he was just in his pyjamas without one single accident. It does sound as if he is ready, clever boy!
