Would I be weird to buy a whiteboard?

I've always worked from home about 50% of the time but since covid I'm now officially a full time homeworker.

I've just taken on a new role which is all very new to me and a massive step up. I think I'm a bit weird, but I find it much easier to concentrate if I draw things out and I think for this project I'm really going to need to concentrate 😹

Thing is, the office is our only spare room. Obviously we've no-one coming to stay for the foreseeable but when we do will they think I'm a weirdo?! It seems a bit odd for a home office! Maybe I'll stick some fairy lights round it or something, pretty it up😄

My husband has several all around the wall in our bedroom where his desk is.

EduCated · 22/01/2021 20:12

Who cares if they do?! It’s your very real workspace - use it, enjoy it and make it work for you now. Stuff the hypothetically judgy potential future guests!

SabrinaThwaite · 22/01/2021 20:19

Whiteboard is fine.

Flip chart might be a step too far.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 22/01/2021 20:26

We have a stick-on whiteboard on the kitchen cupboard. It is usually used for noting down times/amounts of the kids' medication if they've needed any or for silly notes. It's come in really useful for lockdown learning! So no, I don't think you'd be daft to get one; if it helps you, why not?

GoodQueenAlysanne · 22/01/2021 20:26

I would go for it, draw out a mind map or whatever. You can always take a photo, wipe clean and stick under a bed or somewhere if you have anyone staying.

wibblewombat · 22/01/2021 20:27

I have one stood on the dining room mantelpiece. I haven't got a job but do have ADHD so it's invaluable for remembering things, appts, etc.

Bloody love it.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 22/01/2021 20:37

not quite the same but I have a glass splashback over the cooker and use dry markers on that for messages, menu plans, general obscenities, so if you had a really big mirror that could work and would not be out of place like a whiteboard.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 22/01/2021 20:40

Presumably you'll be using it as an office more than a spare room even in normal times
I would buy it. You can always write cheery or cheeky depending on the guest, messages on it.
Fairy lights sound good
Or just take it down and put a picture up when you have guests if you really want.

CMOTDibbler · 22/01/2021 20:41

When you have people to stay, just take it down, put it in a cupboard and hang a picture on the hook instead.

DelurkingAJ · 22/01/2021 20:43

I have two! One I bought for the office and then took home with me for lockdown and one that we were sent as part of a ‘conference at home’ recently. Love them!

grassisjeweled · 22/01/2021 20:44

Do it. Better than Visio

Thiscantgoon · 22/01/2021 20:47

I dotn understand guest rooms, for most of us, it's just a room that's rarely used, what a waste. Set it up so it works for what you use it for most.

geogteach · 22/01/2021 20:56

You can buy sheets of 'white board' on a roll .
I currently teach in a youth centre and I stick a piece on the window and use that. You
Can reuse quite effectively and it 'clings' to various surfaces

Hottubtimemachine · 22/01/2021 20:57

I have two massive ones!

MistleTOEboughski · 22/01/2021 20:59

Embrace your inner Sheldon and go for it!

Would I be weird to buy a whiteboard?
Empressofthemundane · 22/01/2021 21:02

Not at all. We’ve had one for years. Comes in really handy.

Aimee1987 · 22/01/2021 21:08

I have one on my fridge incredibly handy for noting down meal plans, shopping lists or whatever we need.
Also have one in my office at work. Go for it.

C152 · 22/01/2021 21:13

If you need it, buy it! If you're worried about it taking up space, you can buy a magic whiteboard, which 'sticks' to the wall using static electricity. It just rolls up like paper when you don't need it anymore. (It works the same as a whiteboard - you can rub out and re-use the sheet.)

I bought a roll when I used to travel to see clients a lot. It was useful (and light!) to take a couple of sheets with me when I wasn't sure what the facilities would be like.

LonelyBlueBauble · 22/01/2021 21:14

We have 2, one hung up on the wall in the boys' den (where they also do school work) and another one the same size that can be moved around, they are massive, I think flip board size.

We use them not for work stuff but for anything and everything, school stuff especially maths or History and Pictionary! There are lots of pictionary websites online and we just use it for fun. Also to do lists for either us or the boys who are teenagers.

Just get one, at Dh's work they have an entire whiteboard wall! You clearly need it, buy one.

tofuschnitzel · 22/01/2021 21:18

I can't imagine why anyone would comment on you having a whiteboard, OP. It's a really useful item, you don't need to be in a particular profession to buy one.

cheeseismydownfall · 22/01/2021 21:23

Perhaps you could put it in a frame if you wanted it too feel less office-y?

Would I be weird to buy a whiteboard?
LegendDairy · 22/01/2021 21:25

I've got one. It's magnetic too.

Echobelly · 22/01/2021 21:26

Not weird... we have a 'whiteboard wall', mainly used for shopping list, spelling test words, and, every now and, by husband for work as well.

I have a small portable one I originally built for DS to practise writing as it seemed a fun way to encourage him and now I use it to write down what he has to do for home school each day. Definitely have their uses/

Ideasplease322 · 22/01/2021 21:33

I use the sheets that stick on the wall. They are great

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 22/01/2021 21:42

My husband has stuck post if noted and paper to
Our bedroom wall where his desk
Is ( not impressed) I would see no issue of whiteboard on wall
On office.
Infact I am going to buy him a notice board or something to pit his things on , then if we ever have anyone visit in future I can take it down and hide behind.
