How do you dust?

Apologies - this post is not exactly going to set the world alight.

For the record, I hate dusting (and in fact all kinds of cleaning), but I hate the sight of a layer dust even more, so what can you do? You gotta dust. So here's what I do - get a yellow duster, scope up dust from surface, shake duster out of window (like my mum taught me). Quite often as I'm flicking my duster out of the window, I'll see someone walking down the street, or one of the neighbours - they glance up and must think, "It's that woman again flicking her duster out of the window."

Now this got thinking - not once in my many walks around the surrounding streets over the last year, have I seen anyone leaning out of a window shaking a duster. So am I dusting in a really antiquated fashion? Is there a new, labour-saving dusting technique, and I've just missed the memo? Or do I just need to loosen up a bit and embrace the dust?!

I use the dust attachment thing on our shark vacuum. Really quick and easy. And then occasionally damp wipe everything. I haven’t used a duster in a long time. 😬

CatFaceCats · 22/01/2021 17:13

I just damp with with a cloth.
Probably the wrong way but I’m not faffing about with dusters and another bottle of spread stuff under the sink!

MonkeyPuddle · 22/01/2021 17:16

Damp flannel, wipe stuff, sling in washer.

vampirethriller · 22/01/2021 17:28

Badly

CosyAcorn · 22/01/2021 17:30

Damp cloth, rinse out in sink and then put cloth in washing machine.

I have a similar question. How do people clean a mop after they've used it?

Metallicalover · 22/01/2021 17:31

Mixture of a damp wash leather and a long microfibre duster.

Luckyelephant1 · 22/01/2021 17:33

Hoover things like skirting boards etc. Damp wipe everything. I've never even owned a duster I don't think. Does it not just spread the dry dust?

TheTeenageYears · 22/01/2021 17:34

Damp cloth and regularly rinse. Only use polish & duster on actual wood and that would be after wiping away the dust (dirt). Use handheld gtech for skirting boards/edges. Also not a fan of cleaning, particularly dusting.

DuesToTheDirt · 22/01/2021 17:37

You obviously don't live near me, I shake mine out of the window. Mind you I hardly ever dust.

MrsWooster · 22/01/2021 17:38

Long handled microfibre thing and bang it out of the window. That’s when I am on top of it; the rest of the time I finally snap and fart at the inch-thick layer and damp cloth it.

ThreeKneeRepeater · 22/01/2021 17:40

I use a yellow duster and Pledge. I usually shake it out in the garden though when I’ve finished.

Chalkcheese · 22/01/2021 17:41

I shake it out in the bin. Why the window? Mostly I damp dust now because of allergies in my house though

Hidinge · 22/01/2021 17:41

Hoover it up. Lately have added wiping things down with a damp microfibre cloth

Sprig1 · 22/01/2021 17:41

Brush attachment on the vacuum and/or damp cloth, depending. Dry dusting just sends dust flying around your house.

maddiemookins16mum · 22/01/2021 17:42

I don’t know, let me ask my DH who does the dusting (and ironing 😊😊).....

Elouera · 22/01/2021 17:44

Usually vacuum but also use a spray with kitchen paper I throw in the compost bin.

I dont see the point of a duster, because surely some of the dust falls off both the things you are dusting, and also the duster itself, because you can shake it out the window?

Pantsomime · 22/01/2021 17:45

Use gravity- dust falls to floor, let settle a bit & hoover- start ceiling height & come down

abstractzebra · 22/01/2021 17:46

@CosyAcorn I use Bio washing powder to clean my floor (not too much!) and it keeps the mop really clean too. I just give it a cold rinse in the sink and drip dry in the shower!

WanderingMilly · 22/01/2021 17:50

I use a yellow duster and pledge, I dust several times a week as I like the place to look shiny! Never flick the dust out of the window, the duster goes straight in the wash (I have several on the go). But I quite like cleaning.....

BadHatHarry74 · 22/01/2021 17:54

Would you consider loaning him out?? My husband knows his way around a vacuum cleaner and makes a lovely g&t, but am not sure he understands what dust is.

Anyway, as I’d guessed, I’m clearly living in the dark ages!

Yellow duster and pledge. I love the smell of pledge. Also a duster with a handle for tricky to reach areas like high up cobwebs and behind radiators. The duster with the handle Is detachable. It goes in the washing machine on a cool cycle along with the yellow dusters and the mop heads (the mop heads get a hot wash occasionally)

WildCherryBlossom · 22/01/2021 17:59

OP I do shake some things out of the window, like throws and stuff, but with Pledge the dust sticks well enough to the duster until it goes in the wash. And occasionally I take cushions into the garden and bang them together to get dust out of them.

SuperbGorgonzola · 22/01/2021 18:05

Duster and Furniture polish all the way. If it's sticky from the kids, I use a really soapy cloth then buff it with a clean tea towel.

Straight in the washing machine. No flapping.

CosyAcorn · 22/01/2021 18:29

Thank you @abstractzebra. During it in the shower! That makes sense, I've only been mopping on dry days so I can dry the mop outside in a bucket. 😆

wendz86 · 22/01/2021 19:14

Weirdly i was thinking the same thing as i shook my duster out the door today that i never see anyone else doing it.
