How do you dust?

Apologies - this post is not exactly going to set the world alight.

For the record, I hate dusting (and in fact all kinds of cleaning), but I hate the sight of a layer dust even more, so what can you do? You gotta dust. So here's what I do - get a yellow duster, scope up dust from surface, shake duster out of window (like my mum taught me). Quite often as I'm flicking my duster out of the window, I'll see someone walking down the street, or one of the neighbours - they glance up and must think, "It's that woman again flicking her duster out of the window."

Now this got thinking - not once in my many walks around the surrounding streets over the last year, have I seen anyone leaning out of a window shaking a duster. So am I dusting in a really antiquated fashion? Is there a new, labour-saving dusting technique, and I've just missed the memo? Or do I just need to loosen up a bit and embrace the dust?!

A car mitt and polish.
Try if!

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 22/01/2021 19:17

I was taught to dust from the ceiling down. Then hoover.

LongIslandIcedT · 22/01/2021 19:27

Quick run round with Flylady ostrich feather duster, shake outside.
Otherwise polish spray and a microfibre cloth and wash aftwerards

ThePricklySheep · 22/01/2021 19:28

I use more than one cloth. They’re not expensive Smile so I might use two to do each room.

halcyondays · 22/01/2021 19:31

Damp microfibre cloth.

BettyAndVeronica · 22/01/2021 19:48

My little battery vacuum but if that does't do it / doesn't reach just kitchen roll and spray.

I have the microfibre cloths I use them for some things but not this.

CraazyCatLady · 22/01/2021 19:55

I was taught the same way, and dust with a yellow duster and shake it out the window. I just don't do it very often. 😳

RandomUsernameHere · 22/01/2021 20:05

Wherever possible I use the brush attachment on the Dyson. Where that can't reach I use a microfibre duster with a long handle (and definitely shake it out of the window when finished)!

everythingbackbutyou · 22/01/2021 20:17

Infrequently and begrudgingly

Plussizejumpsuit · 22/01/2021 20:26

I feel like with dry dusting you're just moving it around loads? I use a polish spray like pledge and a cloth. I use several cloths when doing the whole house. Or if polish spray isn't appropriate I use a damp cloth

Roselilly36 · 22/01/2021 20:41

Spray Polish with a microfibre cloth.

beingmorepositive · 22/01/2021 22:28

Do you use spray polish on everything?

My mum always dusted with a feather / fluffy dusted on a stick and I occasionally do this on the blinds and the edges of the ceilings / any lamp shades. I beat it out the window and loads of dust comes off BlushOn unit surfaces / tables I hides from eco warriors use baby wipes, but I don't recommend water wipes as they are too wet. I use these on my kitchen doors too. I don't clean that often, I have small children and muddy dogs so the day to day damage limitation is enough to take up all my time .

thelegohooverer · 22/01/2021 23:03

I call it 3d hoovering. Start in the ceiling corners with the cobwebs, down the walls and curtains, along the surfaces and eventually hoover the floor.

On another day, I spray everything liberally and follow around with a cloth.

I don’t mix dry cleaning and wet cleaning (after an unfortunate incident with a slightly damp hoover and a curtain).

I haven’t seen anyone shaking a yellow duster out the window for years and this thread has made me very nostalgic
