Just found this on our kitchen floor, thought it was a bit of fluff at first and swept it up but then realised it was wriggling! Blush Anyone know what it is? Hopeful it’s just a caterpillar and not anything horrible...

Caterpillar.

Gilead · 22/01/2021 10:30

Baby slug?

inappropriateraspberry · 22/01/2021 10:30

Just a caterpillar. Throw it outside

LindaEllen · 22/01/2021 10:35

Aww it's a caterpillar. I love them 💗

LindaEllen · 22/01/2021 10:36

Out of interest when you say 'hopefully just a caterpillar and not anything horrible' what would you think horrible was, and why don't you mind it if it's a caterpillar but you would if it was called something else?

Bloodyhamabeads · 22/01/2021 10:37

Just a caterpillar. Throw it outside

Why would you throw it? Why be cruel? Just put it outside.

cardswapping · 22/01/2021 10:38

I think the OP was worrying that it could be a sign of infestation.

Some bugs love flour for example, so finding one is bad news as you need to clean all the cupboards.

Lampan · 22/01/2021 10:41

It’s a leatherjacket, a crane fly larva. I’ve found one completely randomly in my kitchen before, but nothing since. Just put it outside 🙂

bellropes · 22/01/2021 10:49

It's a beetle larvae. Probably a darkling beetle. It's harmless and won't bite or spread disease. Just put it somewhere dark and quiet.

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 22/01/2021 10:51

It’s an insect larvae

GoryGilmore · 22/01/2021 11:01

@LindaEllen something horrible as in something that is a sign of an infestation. That would be horrible to me.

For anyone who is concerned, he hasn’t been hurt or thrown anywhere, he’s currently in a mini beast palace that my daughter has quickly thrown together, with twigs and leaves from the garden and a stray brussell sprout she found at the bottom of the veg drawer. She’s having a good look at him with her magnifying glass. We’ll release him safely in the garden later, whatever he is!

🙄 It's just a turn of phrase. I didn't mean lob it out with an over arm bowl!
GoryGilmore · 22/01/2021 11:05

@inappropriateraspberry don’t worry, I knew what you meant! Grin

Please make a perfectly balanced ecosystem in a large tank for the blessed creature and lovingly feed it with the finest of nectar.
Or pop it on the bird table.
It's some sort of insect larvae and probably doesn't belong in the house.

SummerOfComedy · 22/01/2021 11:12

It looks like the things I had years ago.
I moved my fridge one day and they were underneath. Loads of them. Someone told me they were carpet beetle larvae.

GoryGilmore · 22/01/2021 11:14

Oh god Confused I hope it’s not anything like that @SummerOfComedy. All hardwood floors downstairs so no carpet to munch on there!

GoryGilmore · 22/01/2021 11:15

DD has named him Robert after Robert the Robot from Justin’s House Grin

GoryGilmore · 22/01/2021 11:17

@TheMandalorian he’ll just have to be satisfied with his IKEA box and mouldy sprout Grin

OP posts:
Lampan · 22/01/2021 11:21

Carpet beetle larvae are a lot smaller than this

GoryGilmore · 22/01/2021 11:26

I would say he’s about an inch long. Lots of little feet, or whatever they’re called in insect terms.

OP posts:
TheMandalorian · 22/01/2021 11:28

They usually prefer some damp wood and the central heating will have hatched it. We had woodlice for a bit which had made their way through from the garage. Now cleared out. They can travel quite far so worth having a thorough look through the house for damp. Lift up any lino or move any furniture against outside walls.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 22/01/2021 11:29

Carpet beetle. You need to clean under your fridge/appliances and vacuum where the skirting joins the floor downstairs as that'll be where they disappear to.

GoryGilmore · 22/01/2021 11:51

I’ve googled everyone’s suggestions, I’m sure it’s not a carpet beetle now as it doesn’t look anything like the photos of those. My bet is leatherjacket or caterpillar.

Lob it over with an arm bowl 😂😂😂

FellowFlipFlop · 22/01/2021 12:04

It doesn't look like a leather jacket, they're smooth and disgusting and chubby and impossible to kill even with an overarm lob
