Yes. They (not the Fire ones) are completely different to a tablet/phone.

Talisin · 19/01/2021 16:30

Yes. eInk is kinder on the eyes.

Darklingthrush · 19/01/2021 16:31

Yes! I bought one before Christmas and I love it.

Darklingthrush · 19/01/2021 16:31

Only downside is that I can't read library books on it.

HappyFlamingo · 19/01/2021 16:32

Yes - the lighting effect is completely different.

hapagirl · 19/01/2021 16:32

I have a paper white kindle and find it very easy.

delilahbucket · 19/01/2021 16:33

Yes. I have a paperwhite and it is just like looking at a book. I use the app for magazines.

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/01/2021 16:36

I see, I thought it might be better. The beauty therapist I went to said she was addicted to hers, when it broke she bought a new one straight away.

So you’re all saying I have to buy a kindle then.

I don't have the paperwhite btw, just the cheapest one - not sure what the difference is? Can you read library books on paperwhites?

BertieBotts · 19/01/2021 16:38

Definitely, it needs to be the normal kind (Paperwhite or standard) not the Fire ones.

10kstepsaroundthegardenthen · 19/01/2021 16:39

@Darklingthrush

There used to be a lending library that was hoot for free books.

Love my paperwhite.just got a new one and I can have a black screen with white writing so it's even nicer to read in bed I the dark.

BertieBotts · 19/01/2021 16:42

Paperwhite and standard are the same in terms of which books they support, the difference is Paperwhite has a built in light, so you can read it in the dark.

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/01/2021 16:45

Silly question but is the paper white a whiter screen? Blush

WeAllHaveWings · 19/01/2021 16:45

I prefer the kindle app on my ipad because it is larger page and with a cream background and medium brightness I don't feel it tires my eyes.

I found the led lighting on my paperwhite (bought in 2016, so there may have been improvements) distracted and annoyed me as I could see very subtle shadow lines from each led. Ds(16) who has better eyesight than me couldn't see the lines so I gave it to him and I use my ipad instead.

BertieBotts · 19/01/2021 16:47

Ooh I don't have the black screen option on mine! Maybe when it dies. I love it for breastfeeding - just brilliant. My friends clubbed together and got me one for my birthday when I was pregnant with DS2. The only thing I'd say is be aware the e-ink screen is not as robust as a glass touchscreen and toddlers pressing on it will cause permanent shadows/bright spots, which is a bit annoying.

I don’t think so, I think the main difference is the built in light.

I luffs mine. As per your OP I replaced immediately when my ancient (original) one broke a few years ago.

No Smile it just means it looks like paper (actually kind of greyish) as opposed to the traditional screen. It is very good btw, it reads beautifully. It has a backlight which you can regulate to read in the sun or in the dark.

You can read library books using a kobo eReader which supports Overdrive if your library supports it. I have the Kobo Clara and borrow from my local library. You can also use the Libby app on phone/tablet to borrow ebooks and audiobooks from libraries.

Darklingthrush · 19/01/2021 16:52

Paperwhite has a built in light, so you can read it in the dark.
The standard one also has a built in light now which means I can read it while dh sleeps!

Darklingthrush · 19/01/2021 16:53

I do sometimes read library books on a Kindle fire but it's not as nice as reading on a proper kindle!

BertieBotts · 19/01/2021 16:56

I can see the lines, but they don't bother me. I thought they would at first but I got used to them.

MustBeThin · 19/01/2021 16:59

I've got the latest kindle oasis which has the usual lighting plus a more orange light which you can adjust to make the paper more book like. Not sure whether the newer paperwhites also have this option. I love my kindle so much, I find it much better on my eyes than reading from my phone/ipad

MrsDeadlock · 19/01/2021 17:00

I've had 3 kindles and love them so much that when one breaks I immediately buy another. They last about 2 years before a DC drops them.

The best advantage for me is that I never gave to use my reading glasses for them. So I can read in bed and fall asleep without glasses on my face. I've found this with standard kindle as well as paperwhite.

The fire was excellent as an entry point, but the add free paperwhite is AMAZING

kursaalflyer · 19/01/2021 17:04

I miss my kindle but the cost of the books I want to read are too expensive. Am using iPad to access BorrowBox now and just checked incase I could access it through the kindle but unfortunately I can't.

SoupDragon · 19/01/2021 17:24

The standard and Paperwhite only example differ in level of spec/size. They both do the same job but I guess the Paperwhite does it slightly better. You can compare them on Amazon,
