My perimenopausal brain has turned to mush, I’m sleeping poorly so always tired, and have some things worrying me so my concentration is shot to pieces and I’m finding it hard to read the usual literary fiction I enjoy!

Please suggest some thrilling books that I will get sucked into and not be able to put down. Well written, ideally, but certainly gripping!

TIA 🙂

Apple Tree Yard - Louise Doughty

Try the Slough House series by Mick Herron. The first one's called Slow Horses.

They're thrillers, kind of, set in a world where MI5 spies who've cocked up somehow (left data on a train, messed up a training exercise, became an alcoholic, etc) get sent to an administrative backwater known colloquially as Slough House to see out their careers in quiet disgrace. However they always end up being dragged back into some caper or other.

The main character who runs Slough House, Jackson Lamb, is one of fiction's most enduring grotesques. They're exceptionally well-written and have a very dry wit about them.

Watching with interest. Yes yes yes to Robert Galbraith. Anything by Val McDermid or Stuart MacBride (the latest ones by both are cracking but save yourself a few bob by getting their early work second hand). For a more gentle but still great book try Richard Osman's debut. Great characters and I now know where I want to retire to.

And agree with the Mick Heron recommendation too

Georgina Cross - The Missing Women and The Stepdaughter are pretty good books.

I have just started the DCI Kett books by Alex Smith and recently read the Paula Maguire books by Claire McGowan and the DCI Logan books by JD Kirk.

The Naturalist by Andrew Mayne, there are sequels. Also Public Enemy Zero by him, very fast paced.
Unallocated Space by Jerry Hatchett
The Great Zoo of China by Matthew Reilly, also by him Contest.

Well, I'm so exciting for all the reading I'm going to be doing now for a while.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions.

The Silent Daughter by Emma Christie. I read it cover to cover in a single sitting (I’m a fast reader!)
Very unexpected twist and really well written from start to finish

spababe · 21/01/2021 17:31

The Sudden Departure Of The Frasers by Louise Candlish is very enjoyable as well as The Other Passenger

NeonBella · 21/01/2021 17:44

When I just want to read and not have to think too hard I really enjoy books by Lisa Gardner.
In fact she has a new one out soon and I'm quite excited!
There's loads of them but they do go in a certain order so you'd have to have a Google.

NancyDrew1966 · 21/01/2021 17:47

Whisper man by Alex north (I think)
Naomis room by Jonathon Aycliffe
Really enjoyed some of Susan Hills novels, woman in black, mist in the mirror etc gothic and exciting
Adam Neville the Ritual terrifying !

ButwhereisMYcoffee · 21/01/2021 17:49

The Woman in the Window

Iheartmysmart · 21/01/2021 17:56

I quite like anything by Joy Ellis and also Angela Marsons but they are more crime than thriller. Also struggling with anything that requires much input from my brain.

2020quelhorreur · 21/01/2021 17:59

To The Lions by Holly Watt and Three Hours by Rosamund Lupton

Averyhungrycaterpillar · 21/01/2021 17:59

I quite enjoyed the guest list by Lucy foley. Murder mystery type thing. Definitely stealing some of these suggestions!

If you have amazon prime have a look at prime reading. I've just discovered it & coz it's free if I make a dud choice I don't mind!

Pandoraslastchance · 21/01/2021 18:12

I'm going to steal some of these recomendations!

I've just started reading Patricia Cornell 'Scarletta" series. Its a bit hit and miss to be honest.

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 21/01/2021 18:30

Any of the Stuart MacBride Logan McRae books, I loved them all.

The Book Of Human Skin by Michelle Lovric, different but very gripping.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 21/01/2021 19:04

I'm posting so I dont lose this as I need to start reading again rather than wasting hours reading crap on my phone!
I've previously enjoyed Peter James and Mark Billingham. I normally read fantasy and supernatural books but fancy a change!

implantsandaDyson · 21/01/2021 19:17

I like Jane Harper - The Dry, The Lost Man especially. I wasn't as fussed on Force of Nature and she has a new one out - the Survivors.
We begin at the End - Chris Whitaker
Scrublands - Chris Hammer

TheCanyon · 21/01/2021 20:01

Stephen Leathers dan spider shepherd series.
