The milkman has just been!

It’s just before 2am am up in bed but not asleep and heard what I think is breaking glass outside. So I dash to the window.
Live in a small cul-de-sac and there have been a couple of catalytic converters stolen from cars recently and this I I’m going to catch a car thief in the act.

It’s a milkman doing a delivery! Is this the time they come now?!

My neighbour has one that was coming at 2am- trouble is, the engine was so loud and it was lit up so brightly it was waking me up and then I couldn’t get back to sleep. Recently, it’s more like 5.30/6 am which is better.

It's a bloody expensive way of buying milk. According to Milk & More site, it's a 80p a pint, compared to £1.50 for 6 pints at Aldi.

Assuming you buy 10 pints a week, that's £286 a year extra.

Depends whether you want fresh milk on your doorstep, Aldi might be cheaper - but so is cooking fish and chips to getting a takeaway

You’re paying for convenience and delivery, milk and more do bottles of organic yogurt, cream and organic vegetables boxes - all cheaper to buy in Aldi

But for some that what they want

The muffins and cakes look good

This is why I cancelled mine and ending up always keeping uht milk in the house (semi rural, nearest shop is 3 miles away)

Mine comes anywhere between 11pm and 5am!!!!

It varies so I'm assuming it's just to do with "when the milk for that round is ready" maybe?

Since covid ours has come at 9pm the day before it's meant to be delivered. They didn't actually warn us of this. But it's worked out alright as I can put in fridge before we go to bed and have cold milk the next day.

Milk and more deliver to us after 8am, which is too late as we've all left the house by then.

I love having a milkman. Yes it’s more expensive but I get organic milk delivered direct to my door. A great service. I’m glad more people are using them again.

I also get eggs, juice and bread from mine.

Mine comes at around midnight, a couple of tomes the milk has been there by the time we got home from a night out.

I really like having the bottles, I’ll use them to water the plants as I put them out and don’t begrudge the extra for the same reasons as @FrangipaniBlue, they for better in the fridge too.

Ours nearly always comes at around 2 or 3am.
Glass bottles - that’s one reason we have deliveries. One less thing to have to lug from the supermarket is another.

Back in the good old days when pubs were open and we could stay there drinking until they started dropping hints around midnight (remember those days? Ahhh happy memories!), we would often pass the milkman on our walk home. So he starts very early, although several people have complained it's too early because it encourages theft by drunk people walking home from the pub!!! (Honestly never us, but I can see how the timing crossover would cause problems)

Mine comes around 7am. He lives in the road behind me.
It saves me lugging pints back from the supermarket. Less plastic waste too.

Mine comes at 3 (I know thanks to pregnancy insomnia)

My milkman used to bring some amazing orange juice in a glass bottle. He had the odd problem with drunks pinching milk off doorsteps but many times they stopped him to buy a pint . Sadly no milkman where I live now .

We tried our local milkman but he did his round in a diesel van that kept waking us up so we cancelled it - sleep was more important

Report

I occasionally use milk and more - I also have not great sleep patterns so I'm often awake at 4.00 am when he delivers to me. The first time I spoke to him he got quite a shock.

I think they have to deliver early these days as people leave for work early and most families have 2 working parents.

Oh and milk and more deliver really good orange juice.

I use Modern Milkman and they tend to deliver to me at around 2-3am, I guess if they’ve got a long round and need to get to everyone by 7am those at the start must get early deliveries.

We have Milk and More, it comes about 1am, so in summer we leave out a coolbox, but if we forget then he puts it behind the car so it's in the shade when the sun comes up. It might be more expensive but it means we only need to do a food shop once a week, never need to go just because we've run out of milk and don't have to store 10 pints at once. The ordering app is very easy and its nice being able to add things like a bottle of juice the day before, in fact they do a huge range of stuff now.

It's not expensive it's fairly priced.

The supermarkets make a loss on milk they sell it so cheaply in order to compete with each other on 'loss leaders'. Basically people pop in for a cheap pint of milk and come out with a basket full of other stuff too.

That loss is then passed on to the dairy industry creating extremely tight margins. The farmers are then blamed for industrialising milk production.

I've often thought that today's milkmen would have far greater take up if they delivered between 6pm - 9pm when people are back from work.

I agree with this too, it’s very useful seeing you only have half a pint left knowing 2 more will appear overnight, and paying a fair price for things is important.

My teenager does a milk round and he starts at 1am. They deliver to factories/offices as well as homes plus since the first lockdown there was a surge in people wanting milk/dairy delivered so to fit everyone in they work 1am until 7am.

I'm sure it saves us money overall as I sit down once a week now and do a menu plan, shopping list and one big supermarket shop, previously I didn't bother to plan as well because I knew I would be popping in a few times a week to get milk and could just buy stuff spontaneously.

Report
SantaMonicaPier · 19/01/2021 07:50

Ours comes around 6.30am. Off topic but now I can get locally delivered organic milk in a glass bottle I'm never going back to supermarket milk in a plastic carton!
