The milkman has just been!

It’s just before 2am am up in bed but not asleep and heard what I think is breaking glass outside. So I dash to the window.
Live in a small cul-de-sac and there have been a couple of catalytic converters stolen from cars recently and this I I’m going to catch a car thief in the act.

It’s a milkman doing a delivery! Is this the time they come now?!

A fair way off topic but some birds in the UK can no longer access milk from bottles because people buy from supermarkets.
@Frenchdressing here is the bottle insulator. We tied the string on after the lid got blown off one night.
Thanks!
@FamilyOfAliens, great idea, thanks. Where is that jug from?
eBay or Amazon.

In bygone days I got mine from a little hardware shop down the road Sad

Ours has sometimes come before we went to bed Grin so a bit after midnight. I think they are not normally that early though!

My milkman is always her before midnight. I sometimes here him stop outside (we live on a really quiet road, no other traffic at that time of night).
There is another milkman delivers on our estate and I’ve noticed he sometimes doesn’t come until after people have left for work, so milk isn’t sat out all day which isn’t ideal.

@quince2figs

You can decant milk into one of these (get two so one can go in the dishwasher when it’s empty).

The half-litre one shouldn’t be too hard for children to lift.

@81Byerley, thanks, both good ideas. I noticed the juice had a screw top, which I like.

What is this milk insulator thing? Think I need one for the summer.

@quince2figs Their silicone bottle caps are good. Before I bought those I used to transfer the milk to one of their orange juice bottles, which was also glass, but screw top.

@briebuiltthiscity go to milk and more online to see if they deliver to your post code. Ours delivers just before midnight. It's a great way to support British dairy farms, Also delivers lots of other stuff, including bread.

@APurpleSquirrel

We've been using Milk & More since before the pandemic & were so thankful we did once lockdown hit.
Our milkman delivers anytime between 3-7am but we have also got the milk bottle insulater.
We prefer being able to support local farmers, pay a fair price for fresh milk delivered to our door 3 times a week, use less plastic & my personal favourite reason, not having to sniff milk to see if it's gone off 🤢

Since the first lockdown people have been using Milk and More here. I know this because I am woken around 3.00 a.m. by some kind of ethnic music blasting out of a car with the windows open, it gets louder as the doors/boot are opened and the deliveries are made, then a lot of slamming and it drives off with the music gradually fading away.

It lasts just long enough to ensure I am fully awake. I am not alone in being woken and although Milk & More have said they would resolve it, they haven't.

I won't use Milk & More because of it.

My milk arrives at 11pm - milkman has a big round! I often have it in the fridge before I go to bed Grin

Mine sometimes comes at 10.30pm It's mad. Am hoping this is only a winter thing as don't want it out all night in warmer weather.

Our milkman comes between 11pm and 12am.

In the summer we ended up waiting for him as didn’t want the milk curdling.

Off topic, but I grew up in Eastleigh were Benny Hill used to be a milkman (before my time!) & he based Ernie the Fastest Milkman in the West on his time as a milkman & Market Street mentioned in the song is based on the real street in Eastleigh. Grin

We get milk 3 times a week, usually comes between 4 and 6 (we're in a northern city) it's come late twice, once was a foggy morning when it came nearer 8 and on Saturday just past, we had an email Friday saying they would be running late on Saturday due to road problems Thurs/Fri as we had a massive Snowfall.
We bought milk early afternoon thinking it wasn't coming only for the milk to arrive at 7pm!

It's the reason we wont get milk delivered.

We have Milk & More deliver too.
Although at the beginning of the pandemic there were no more slots because everyone signed up! However, I've got an account now and I love it.
Goodness knows when he comes (Ian!) although everything is there by 6am, but he must be some sort of ninja because no-one ever hears him including the neighbours!
The juice is great, milk is fresh and the Welsh Cakes are gorgeous! He's been great because there's no shop in my village so it cuts down on car trips to the nearest shop, and what with lockdown he's a godsend!

We’ve just signed up to Milk and More. Brilliant range of food, drinks, household stuff.
No problems with price, as you’re paying for the convenience, plus avoiding shops during lockdown! Very glad if this extra cost means suppliers are paid more too.
I love the idea of glass, but the reality not living up to my memory of childhood milk bottles in the 70’s. Foil tops annoying. Find it really difficult to grip cold bottles, esp if slightly damp. Children also find difficult to hold bottles with one hand. And they pour really badly when full, so drips down side of bottle/mug, and under bottle in fridge. I’m old enough to remember the more elongated bottle shape, which poured well.
I think I just need to persevere!
They also do plastic cartons, but so much waste.

I liked having the milkman deliver and I hope to be able to go back to it at some point but we are getting through a lot of milk right now and we are struggling financially so it was one of the things that had to go. Along with the window cleaner.

Back to the point of the thread. Ours was often delivered around 1/2am. If DH was on a late shift he could bring it in on his way home. In the summer we left out a cool bag which helped if we didn't get it until the morning.
