Shiny new thread to see us through to end of the month... possibly beyond!

KOKOing everyone.

The twinnings lemon and ginger was weak beyond words!

The supermarket own brand ones are weak too. I'm really impressed with the Clipper one, although it is a bit pricier (cheaper than a bottle of wine though!).

TeaRose29 · 22/01/2021 11:27

I peel and slice a knob of fresh ginger, put it in a small amount of boiling water, and let it steep for a few hours. Then I add the "juice" to sparkling water and ice. It makes a lovely, calorie/syn free Grin ginger drink, and you can add a bit of sweetener (or sugar) if you want it a bit sweeter - although ginger is naturally quite sweet.

InTheseUncertainTimes · 22/01/2021 12:08

Day 22. I slept past 7am this morning! Shock Did have my usual several nightly wake ups, but didn't stay awake tossing and turning at any point. Feeling okay so far today. Helps to see the sun poking its head out for a change. I'm just home from a long walk, planning to bake some "healthier" muffins to ease my current sweet tooth.

Re. ginger, I've been enjoying bog standard diet ginger ale myself. I'm not usually much for fizzy drinks (except as mixers Blush ) but the occasional glass has been nice this month.

Spacecudet · 22/01/2021 17:40

I really struggle with Fridays! Week days I don't normally drink so not tempted, but as soon as I finished work today I wanted wine. My DH has a glass of white on the go and a bottle of red for later. I'm eating prawn crackers to stop me joining in.

Amdone123 · 22/01/2021 18:24

@Spacecudet - snap ! Prawn crackers here, too. And I've just got in from work and Fridays are hard for me, too. If it were in the house (wine), I don't know how that would go. My OH doesn't drink, so am lucky there. At work, I did have a fleeting thought about just caving in, but I've learnt it's just a thought and I don't need to act on it. I often have a thought that I'll clean the oven, but that doesnt get done. Also dont want hangover tomorrow. I really do not miss the pounding headache, the insatiable thirst and hunger and the anxiety of wondering who I texted!
done

UsernameFail · 22/01/2021 18:42

Tonight is day 22 - £192 and 9800 calories saved. I deserve a treat!

My friend said: you must feel amazing and tbh, I don't feel amazing but: I've lost 2kgs and exercised 4 times this week which is a definite win. I do feel more rested than I've felt in ages. I also noticed that I haven't missed alcohol this week until tonight so I'm about to crack open a AF Heineken.

I really am very impressed with us all for getting this far during such a difficult time.

Well done us

Dugee · 22/01/2021 18:49

Evening all! Are we on our 4th AF weekend? Well done us!

I'm starving but apart from that plodding along ok.

Spacecudet · 22/01/2021 19:07

@Amdone123 that is my problem. We have lots of wine in the house. DH has had a glass of white and now is on the red. I've had a tonic, but I'm very grumpy about abstaining.

Amdone123 · 22/01/2021 19:16

@Spacecudet, well, you are stronger than me that's for sure! Mind you, I'm not sure I would cave even if there were wine in the house because I definitely want to do this.
I understand you're feeling a bit grumpy, but could you think of the positives of not having one perhaps? At least no hangover tomorrow? Another af day to your credit? You're doing really well.

pointythings · 22/01/2021 19:18

I don't feel at all like drinking - had COVID vaccination yesterday and am having the expected side effects. Monster headache, chills, incredibly sore arm so it's an early night for me. It isn't supposed to last long so hope to be feeling better tomorrow, but I had the shittest night sleep ever last night and am knackered.

CrystalE · 22/01/2021 19:24

Stay strong DJers in the face of temptation from "D" Hs. Mine is doing an online pub session with mates.

What's another weekend - just the same as 2 other days of the week .....

CrystalE · 22/01/2021 19:25

I am doing online quiz session with my mates - used to be a pub quiz. I was the one who could never do any of the celeb stuff but sometimes got an obscure 80s music question right

Spacecudet · 22/01/2021 19:27

@Amdone123 I know you're right. Will try to think of the positives. We are all doing really well.
@pointythings hope you feel better soon.

Amdone123 · 22/01/2021 19:29

@pointythings. Have a good night's sleep, pointy. Hope you feel better tomorrow.

pointythings · 22/01/2021 20:00

Thanks, guys. Can't wait to get horizontal, to be honest.

Msfoxy17 · 22/01/2021 20:19

On the subject of ginger and tea, I'm quite a fan of Twinings Spiced Ginger..but nice than that and rather more pricey is Pukka Three Ginger.

Dugee · 22/01/2021 20:40

@Ladywinesalot

Hey *@Dugee*

I take all those too plus Magnesium and zinc and they really help with sleep and energy levels.

Apart from now, I woke for the loo and can’t sleep now Hmm

Maybe I should get some magnesium too...

Zinc is combined with the B complex.

Ladywinesalot · 22/01/2021 21:25

@Dugee No harm in trying

@UsernameFail Well done for the loss and workouts Star

CrystalE · 22/01/2021 23:14

Night all. DH is a bit squiffy. Glad I'm not.

9am walk with friend tomorrow. Has been nice to catch up with quiz friends this eve. I'm missing normal life but not really missing alcohol as much as I thought I would.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 22/01/2021 23:59

End of day 22 and we're all brilliant.

That's 70.9%

That's a good percentage! We'll storm through the weekend, dry as you like, no bother!

Night everyone.

HPLikecraft · 23/01/2021 00:01

Sorry, name change fail! Blush

As you were...

SnoopyMcLoopy · 23/01/2021 08:21

@Msfoxy17 I love lemon and ginger tea but recently I was sent Twinings Camomile and honey in my online shop instead of camomile, and I've become completely obsessed with it!

SnoopyMcLoopy · 23/01/2021 08:26

Well done d everyone on getting through Friday night. I had a 0% beer but tbh although it was nice, it didn't hit the spot in the same way that fresh lime, soda and angostura bitters does. I had a bit of a panic about the bitters as it is 47% proof although you literally use a drop. Anyway I did some research and it turns out that the tiny amount used in a drink equates to less than 0.4% 😀

InTheseUncertainTimes · 23/01/2021 09:42

Day 23. Morning everyone, and I hope last night wasn't too hard, and this weekend will go smoothly for you all. I had a wild night of reading and hot chocolate, and have big plans of walks and housework for the weekend.

DH has been / is doing DJ with me. I asked him last night what he wants to do after this month. It doesn't seem like he's struggled not drinking. He's maybe had more headaches than usual, but he gets cluster migraines anyway. He thinks he also used to drink too much last year, but we often drank the same amounts, and he's a foot taller than me and a lot heavier, too, so it'd make sense if it hasn't formed into the same kind of issue for him than for me. Anyway, he's not sure, but thinks he'd like to go back to having at least the occasional drink. I hope at least to begin with he'll stick to drinks I won't be too tempted to share, like beer.

I went through my Fitbit data, and it seems I'm not making it up that I don't feel better. My resting HB is up by quite a lot this month. My cardio fitness score has gone from very good to good. Sleep patterns haven't improved (not getting more REM periods, for example) and total sleep amount is unchanged, although wakings during the night are shorter. It's a bit disheartening, especially since the book I'm reading keeps making confident claims along the lines of "it only takes five nights after your last drink for your natural sleep pattern to return". Thankfully googling has been more reassuring, and apparently things can take months to get back into normal, if you've started forming a dependency. Sigh.

HPLikecraft · 23/01/2021 09:55

Morning all.
Hope you’ve slept well and are super refreshed today.

Seems a lot of us are undecided about February, and what sort of thread would be a good idea for then. I’ve made my decision now to stay dry through February, though I’ll stop on the 28th, as it’s my birthday! DD is staying dry, and DH is pretty much not drinking now as no one else is.
After that though, I’ll be doing that devilishly difficult thing of careful moderation.

Do people think that one thread for dry and moderating in February will work? I think probably yes: they’re both blooming difficult.

One week (and one day) left of DJ. That’s fantastic!

Have a good weekend.
