Morning routine for waking up

AIMD · 16/01/2021 19:36

What is your morning routine. What things do you do in the morning that start your day off in a good way?

I’ve fallen into a slump whereby I am waking feeling awful, needing 2 coffees and am slow to get going. Doesn’t start the day well for me.

So I’m interested to hear how others start their day.

Thinking of bringing my daily walk earlier and doing a very early morning walk to see if that gets the day started for me better.

It sounds like you need more sleep??

But yes 20 mins of daylight and a bit of light excercise is great for letting your body know you are up.

dottiedaisee · 16/01/2021 23:15

I just lie in bed from about 8 thinking about too much and then have a shower about 930 . Always feel better after my shower and then have a coffee, walk the dog..off to work by 12 . I work as an RN in a care home and it has been massively stressful recently and lots of RIP so I try get there feeling positive at 1230 to boost staff moral !

Lockdownshmockdown · 16/01/2021 23:32

Normal times:
Wake up an hour before I need to leave,
Roasting hot shower- my day is ruined without this,
Take my time getting ready while listening to a podcast/audiobook,
Banana for breakfast.

Lockdown times:
Get up half hour before I need to be on a video call/meeting etc.,
Roasting hot shower,
Cooked breakfast for my partner and porridge for me (often with Nutella because, fuck it it's lockdown),
Get out for a walk on dry days ASAP to blow away the cobwebs.

A hot shower makes my day. I'm useless without one in the morning. I don't drink coffee and I think a hot shower does for me what coffee does for others.

I do need more sleep. Got in to a bed routine due to home working and Christmas. Was a wake at 6 person now reluctantly dragging myself out at 7:30

Sounds lush. In doing cold shower. I 100% need to do a walk early but need to get up early to get out and back before they wake.

@AIMD

Porridge with raspberries and Nutella, and 2 - 3 squares of Lindt dark chocolate with sea salt grated into skimmed milk in the Velvetiser.

I should go back to bananas fir breakfast but, like I say, lockdown Confused

I'm trying to hold off on the hot chocolate til later in the day but it all amounts to the same thing anyway !

8obbingabout · 16/01/2021 23:49

My alarm goes off at 6:15
Lay in bed listening to morning radio till 6:45
Roasting hot shower
Dressed and make up
Coffee and breakfast
Brisk morning walk to replace my commute as I am WFH
Back at home and logged on for 9am

However I have gotten into an awful aweful habit I cant seem to break over xmas of staying awake till 1/2am every night with internet browsing/shopping, Instagram, pintrest and Netflix and now I am waking up 8:30 rushed shower and only just managing to log on for 9!! My morning routine has gone right out the window : (

KizzyWayfarer · 16/01/2021 23:50

I woke up with s minging headache the other morning which I think was dehydration so I’m trying to drink a bit more before bedtime.
Feeling human in the morning takes several steps:
Hit the snooze button once (occasionally twice) so I’m not coming out of a deep sleep
Look at my phone for 10 min, starting off with a simple game if my eyes can’t focus on MN yet
Get up, make cup of tea, drink some of the tea.
Wake up the kids, have rest of tea, breakfast, minimal conversation.
After that I can just about cope with the challenge of having a shower!
I’d much rather set the alarm earlier and have a bit less sleep than not have the time to wake up properly and have to deal with stuff while feeling shit.

Ideally...
0545: First alarm
0550: Get up, pee, splash face with water, drink a glass of water, take multivitamin
0600: 30 minutes on exercise bike while watching something on Netflix
0630: Cool down and 10 minutes of yoga
0645: Shower
0655: Dry off, apply deodorant and spf, put fluffy dressing gown and slippers on
0705: Make breakfast (usually porridge with some fruit)
0725 - 0740: Make up, hair, spritz of perfume, get dressed and leave for work.

However recently I've been snoozing my alarm a lot. I definitely feel better and tend to have a better rest of the day when I've had time to workout, do some yoga, and put a bit of make up on though.

cariadlet · 17/01/2021 00:25

Alarm usually goes off at 5. Do a few jobs around the house, make my packed lunch for work, shower.

Have a cup of tea while I'm getting dressed.

Usually aim to leave the house about 6.30 I don't know how it takes me an hour and a half before I'm ready to go.

I run to work most mornings and that seems to wake me up and get me ready to face the day.

Pipandmum · 17/01/2021 01:13

I have animals so going downstairs to let the dogs out and actually going outside myself to feed the rabbits wakes me up. This is about 8am during the week but can be 10am weekends. Then I have an inner debate with myself about going back to bed or making breakfast. I've already made sure my daughter is up for online school. My stomach usually wins out.
In normal times I'm up at 7.30 to wake up daughter for school, then showered and ready to take my son to work or college by 9, walk dogs on the way back then make breakfast and get down to work.

maddiemookins16mum · 17/01/2021 07:15

My alarm goes off at 5.30am.
I usually snooze for about 15 mins.
Feed cats, make tea, do the litter tray.
Chat with DH, get something out the freezer to defrost etc.
In shower by 6.20am - all dressed and hair dried by about 6.50am.
I then make a nice coffee, get my bag ready and watch the 7am news in the kitchen. I might even do a bit if MN or whatever game I’m currently obsessed with.
I then leave about 7.20/7.25am as I am office based.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 17/01/2021 07:23

Alarm goes off at 4.50 and I look at the news on my phone, FB, MN until about 5.15. Then I get up and go running for 40 minutes. I don't go every day, but most days. Then I come back about 6.15 for coffee and breakfast. At the moment I'm liking crumpets with butter and marmite. In the shower at 6.30, then get dressed and put on makeup and leave the house about 7.15 to be in school by 7.30.

It is a bit of a busy morning but I've got much more energy then. I never thought I'd go running before work but when I do I have much more energy for the day.

When I get home, about 6.30, I basically just eat dinner and flop. But it's better knowing that I've exercised and I rarely bring work home, or I didn't before remote learning started.

yomellamoHelly · 17/01/2021 07:24

Get up an hour before I need to and go for a walk before work. Wakes me up and sorts my bones out so I can cope with all that sitting/lack of moving around.

MsConstrue · 17/01/2021 07:25

I have 2 coffees in bed then do some yoga. It's a really nice start to the day.

I've stopped using my alarm and just wait until I wake up, so I don't feel exhausted.

Go for a walk a little bit later when it's light and the dogs are awake.

BigTroubleLittleEngland · 17/01/2021 07:36

I get up around 6, currently get downstairs to try and get some meetings done between then and 8 so i can be available for when the dcs get up. I drink a lot of water in those 2 hours. By 9ish I'm assessing my outlook diary to see where the gaps are in which i can do an hour home school. I'm also assessing how put together i need to look on those meetings and if i need to do a full "get dressed" or if i can just put on something half decent on my top half, leaving my pjs on the bottom!

Even without lockdown I'm very much an early bird and will try and get a bit of work in before the kids get up for school. It makes me more relaxed in the day to have already got a couple of bits out of the way.

AlternativePerspective · 17/01/2021 07:48

Normal times I get up and make DS’ breakfast and coffee before college, let the dog out, feed him, unload the dishwasher and clean the kitchen, take meds, and then once DS has gone out I go and have a bath, get dressed and get on with the day. Am unemployed so the day can involve numerous things but I try to fit in a 30 minute session with my exercise hoop at the very least.

Lockdown: the dog has started to bark at around 7 so I get him up, feed him, let him out, take my meds and then go back to bed and watch the news or something similar until ... well, until I can be arsed to get up. Still have bath/get dressed and still ensure my hoop exercise routine...

DayKay · 17/01/2021 07:54

I want a morning where I wake up and exercise but the reality is I wake up and pick up my phone. Read news and mn. Then wake up when I have to. Quick wash etc then coffee.
Clean up the kitchen, sort out breakfast for dc, get them up then exercise, shower and work.

Dontbetardy · 17/01/2021 09:19

If going to work in the office
6.15 awake and coffee made chat with DH while he gets ready to leave
6.45 take coffee and back into bed. TV on with news. iPad and Facebook/mumsnet. I love this 45 minutes before DS gets up.
7.30 get DS up and get myself in shower. Get myself ready. Shout at DS to get himself ready and bag ready for school.
8.00 breakfast
8.20 leave house and drop DS at school
8.35 drive to work
8.45 have parked the car and I’m at desk logged in.

AIMD · 17/01/2021 09:22

Wow ....most of these morning routines are putting me to shame. Pre covid I got up about 6.30 and it was a 2 hrs of slog getting myself and the kids ready for the day.

I’m thinking I might actually make myself a time table (like I used to for the kids) for a morning routine. My day is starting way too slowly and I’m sure it’s because I don’t have a helpful routine.

This is the type of routine I’d like. Can I ask what time you are in bed asleep by? I’m wondering if I actually need to sort out getting to sleep at bedtime before I can sort the morning routine out.

I have a different schedule every day as my work hours change week to week, but taking a 10am start as an example:

6:45 Get up, loo, make cuppa
7:00 Devotional
7:15 Shower
7:30 Dry and style hair (my hair can't just be blow dried and ready to go)
8:00 Breakfast
8:30 Leave the house (8:50 if I woke up late, I'll get the bus instead of walking)
9:15 Arrive at work to prep
10:00 Work starts

I absolutely can't stay in bed past my alarm/waking up. I will sometimes read or look at my phone for a bit but I can never fall asleep again... so I don't run the risk of oversleeping which I guess is something

mogloveseggs · 17/01/2021 09:36

I find I am much more productive in the morning so I sleep with the curtains open. Doesn't make much difference at this time of year but it does come spring.
And I get out of bed when I wake up. No mindless phone scrolling. I don't set an alarm as I'm always up by 8 sometimes half five
Plus that way I get the peace and quiet I crave as everyone else is asleep Grin

JorisBonson · 17/01/2021 09:37

I agree @AIMD!

Pre covid / office days, first alarm goes off at 4.55 and I get out of bed at 5.05.

Shower, make up and hair whilst watching something on Netflix. Feel the cats, chuck my lunch into my bag and out the house at 6.05.

I can't imagine getting up any earlier!

Deelish75 · 17/01/2021 09:44

I shower, wash and dry my hair of an evening.
Go to bed 10.30. Take glass of water with me for morning.

Up at 6.10
Loo, clean teeth, wash face, straighten hair. Drink water. Get dressed.
Downstairs for 7. Make coffee.
Unload dishwasher, get breakfast ready.
7.20 eat breakfast. Tidy up.
7.50 sort DC out ready for school.
8.20 leave for school (when not in lockdown)
8.20 do a few household jobs then start home schooling at 8.50 (when in lockdown).
