I have caught the reading bug over the last six month with not much else to do. Can I ask you some questions ?

If u have a book that comes in a series. Do you read the entire series one after another. I have enjoyed the first two from one series. But there are another ten. So I don’t want to them to become boring.

Do you stop reading a book if you don’t like it. I persevered with a book a few weeks ago. But no I feel I have so many others to read I shouldn’t have bothered.

Do you re read books? Annoyingly I have found some more from an author I like but can’t remember the first ones which I read years ago. But as they all link together I would have to re start from the beginning. That’s a lot of reading time.

Do you write down what you read. Or make lists in anyway ? I’m thinking of writing lists of ones I need so if I’m in a charity shop when they are open again I can make sure I don’t buy one I have.

Can someone have too many books to read ?

I don't think you have to be so methodical about it. I just read what I want when I want and if I don't like it I give up. You wouldn't bother sitting through a film or series you didn't like so it is the same thing to me.

TheDrsDocMartens · 16/01/2021 18:57

I use Goodreads to log what I’ve read. My kindle links to it so it’s easiest but there are other similar apps I think.
I keep a wish list on Amazon but usually buy from other places!
In a series I’ll keep going usually unless I get bored and then I’ll have a break and come back to it.
If I don’t enjoy a book after a couple of chapters I’ll stop.

bearlyactive · 16/01/2021 18:58

Do you read the entire series one after another.

I do, but I don't really go in for long series, I think the maximum I can deal with is five.

Do you stop reading a book if you don’t like it

Yes - life's too short to waste time reading books that I don't get or don't like.

Do you re read books?

Yes, over and over again. I know I'm weird and most people don't do that, but I read quickly.

Do you write down what you read. Or make lists in anyway ?

Nope!

You can never have too many books .

You don't have to finish

The best books are ones you read again and again

I don't binge series ... keep it fresh

Too many books ?

I don't keep a list but I recognise books quite quickly from the first few lines often

sararh · 16/01/2021 19:08

"Can I ask you some questions ?"

I should say so, yes :)

"Do you read the entire series one after another."

If I like it, definitely. But only if I felt like it. I might put it down and come back later. I normally have a few books on the go (appreciate not everyone would choose to do this).

"Do you stop reading a book if you don’t like it."

Of course. Why would you continue? Saying that, I'd give it a good go i.e. a good couple of chapters or even more if it had rave reviews.

"Do you re read books? Annoyingly I have found some more from an author I like but can’t remember the first ones which I read years ago. But as they all link together I would have to re start from the beginning."

Yes I re-read books, very often. I have favourites. Not sure why you'd have to start them all from the beginning?

"Do you write down what you read."

No, I usually have a general idea.

"Can someone have too many books to read ?"

No, but I have a kindle so they don't take up any space! Threw all my hard copies away /gasp/. Again, appreciate this isn't for everyone. I only did this after I'd had the kindle for a couple of years and knew I was happy with it. Was hard to get rid of old favourites because you sort of form a relationship with the way they look and feel and how that relates to how you feel while reading it and your kinship with the characters (almost like the characters live in/are the book), but taking them to a charity shop and knowing someone else could enjoy them helped.

StitchesInTime · 16/01/2021 19:11

If u have a book that comes in a series. Do you read the entire series one after another.

Depends how I’m feeling. Sometimes yes, although more often I have a break between books in a series.

Do you stop reading a book if you don’t like it.

I think life’s too short to force yourself to read books you don’t like. I read for pleasure. If I’m not enjoying a book after a few chapters then generally I’ll put it aside and pick up another one.

Do you re read books?

Yes. I’ve a few old favourites that I’ve reread many times.

Do you write down what you read. Or make lists in anyway ?

Yes, I keep a list of books I’ve read, and also a wish list of books I want to read. But it’s not necessary to make lists to enjoy reading.

Can someone have too many books to read ?

Oh yes. I’ve got a mountain of unread books at home, thanks to an unfortunate weakness around bookshops of any description. Too many books and too little time! Which is another reason for me to stop reading a book if I don’t like it Wink

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 16/01/2021 19:14

Goodreads is a good idea, as DrsDocs says. I think making a list of what you've read is a good idea, as I seem to forget what I've read until halfway through.... Life is too short to read a boring book, put it in the charity shop or return to the library. I prefer to read a series in order, unless I don't like it, then I won't get past the first one. It isn't always obvious something is part of a set, so I don't stress it. If you don't record stuff online, spreadsheet, goodreads or whatever, an A-Z address book will do also, IME.

Meredithgrey1 · 16/01/2021 19:15

Depends on the series whether I’ll read it all in one go.

Yes, I stop reading books I’m not enjoying.

Yep, I re-read books sometimes, if I’ve really enjoyed them.

I use goodreads to log the books I read so that keeps track of it.

MrsDeadlock · 16/01/2021 19:21

I always read the books in a series if I've enjoyed them so far. I hate finishing a series, it's awful.

If I'm not loving a book I persevere for a bit, usually a quarter of it in case it picks up. Sometimes they do.

I absolutely re-read previously loved books. Not often, but I do. Especially years later.

I use a kindle, so my bookshelf is electronic. I can see what I've read. I do own and love RL books though.

FadedRed · 16/01/2021 19:22

I love reading and have all my life. I don’t continue with a book if I’m not enjoying it, but will persist for at least 10% before I stop, just in case it improves. I reread some favourites, it’s like having good friends to stay, and I miss them when they leave! With series of books I will read one after the next, but stop if I’m getting bored with them, then go back to where I left of weeks or months later, depends on the books. Mostly use Kindle now and have ‘purged’ the hundreds of print books I once owned down to approx 200 which I will keep.

Paranoidandroidmarvin1350 · 16/01/2021 19:22

It makes me feel better when I read other people don’t finish reading a book they don’t want. I think it is the point that I spent money in it that makes me keep going.

I have good reads which I have set myself a target goal for this year. I have a kindle but I just don’t like reading on something like that. I like to hold a book.

I need to stop watching you tube recommendations videos as they just want me to buy more. And I’m sat here waiting for the charity shops to open to get more Hmm

OP posts:
CormoranStrike · 16/01/2021 19:27

I used to finish everything, but now I am choosy.

I often read full series but often prefer a gap.

And I reread old friends.

user1487194234 · 16/01/2021 19:31

Read what you enjoy
I have been an avid reader my whole life but it can sometimes become a bit of a competition
If you enjoy it read it,if you are not enjoying stop reading it
Be open to different types of books ,but if they are not for you so be it
Reading has seen me through good and bad times
Enjoy x

Witchend · 16/01/2021 19:32

*Do you read the entire series one after another?"
If I have them or can get them relatively easily at a not too bad price. If they're getting too similar or boring then it's probably not a good series or the author's run out of ideas!

*Do you stop reading a book if you don’t like it."
Yes... and no. If it really disgusts me I would do, but I tend not to pick up books in that type of thing. Reading is comfort time for me, I don't want to read something I find horrible.
I'm reasonably picky about what I buy for books, if I look at a book and feel it offers me less than rereading one I have, then I won't normally get it.
If I don't like what I've read so far, I'll skip a couple of chapters, and read a couple of pages. If it's improved, then I will go back and continue. If I'm still not sure then I might go and read the last page to see if it's a comfortable ending. I don't want an all dead stage centre type, or one that feels incomplete.
If I still don't like it, then that's when I may give up. I may come back to it later though.

Do you re read books?
Totally. More often than new books. There's something very comfortable about settling down with a book you know well. You always spot new things too. Often little bits, like the new shoes she bought in book 2 are mentioned as still being in the box in book 4. You do tend to spot the continuity issues too. Grin
I don't always re-read the whole book though. I might start halfway through, or read a favourite bit, or even flip about. That's for a book I know really well though.
That's a personal thing. DD1 only ever re-read Watership Down several times, and then she also re-read the Cherub series after she'd finished A-levels.
DD2 otoh finishes a book, and if she's enjoyed it will go straight back to the beginning. I've seen her do that 4 times on the trot. She's always got a pile of her loved books around her.

*Do you write down what you read?"
No. I generally know what I have, close enough anyway.

*Can someone have too many books to read?"
If I reach that point I'll let you know. Dh says we have too many books. I say we've too few bookshelves. I am right.
I collect children's books of a variety of authors. I did once start counting and gave up around 5k. I've got more since then.
From sitting here I can see a whole load of different books: Very Hungry Caterpillar, Noddy, Rainbow Fairy, Joan Aiken, Brat Farrar, Swallows and Amazons, Minnow on the Say, Mystery at Witchend...
Plus Carols for Choirs, Molecular Quantum Mechanics, The Essence of Mathematics, Chess openings... actually I tell dh he can reduce the count by one. That's his book. Grin

I usually have a stab at reading a series in order but it doesn’t bother me too much if it is out of order. Although some detective series give away or at least heavily hint at the identity of, previous killers, which annoys me, Elly Griffiths, looking at you. I don’t necessarily read them one after the other as I tend to get them from the library and they don’t have them all at once.
I always used to finish books but don’t have the patience now.
I reread books all the time. I read very quickly and have a very bad memory so half the time it’s as if I am reading for the first time anyway! And other books I read again and again because I want to spend more time with the characters or in the setting. Same as watching a film again.
I never have written down what I read but am considering doing it as otherwise I forget. I have started a Pinterest board of “books I want to read” which I add to when I read the reviews in the papers, and one called Books I Have Read, and I am moving them from one to the other when I read them.
You can never have too many books.

SatsumasOrClementines · 16/01/2021 19:38

"Do you write down what you read."

I like instagram for recording books. It’s nice to have a visual and you can write notes/reviews as your captions. I keep my settings private and have 0 followers it’s just completely for me but you can do it however you want.

Using the tag #bookstagram I found these public accounts that are sort of what I mean:
@bookishmamabear
@inke.leseliebe
@peachesreads

If your an avid reader can I ask some questions ?
Paranoidandroidmarvin1350 · 16/01/2021 19:44

I struggle with my memory now thanks to the menopause. So I have a notebook next to where I read. I write down peoples name and who they are. Or important things.

This has been a game changer for me. If I get lost or can’t remember a person I can just refer.

OP posts:
ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 16/01/2021 19:47

I do read series of books if I like the first one. The thing I have realised, though, is that binging a series makes me less likely to remember it well later on.

I stop if I'm bored but if I'm uncomfortable or irritated I plough on.

I re-read a lot. Think it's because I read brilliant things in my teens and my taste hasn't progressed much.

I don't write books down or keep lists. I don't know what the point would be of that.

SkepticalCat · 16/01/2021 19:52

Do you read the entire series one after another?

No, I might read two books in a series together, then I'd read a couple of other books, then back to the series.

I've got about three series' currently on the go and if I am tempted to start a new series, I'll stop myself as otherwise I won't finish the current ones.

Do you stop reading a book if you don’t like it.

Yes. If it is a book I've bought I'll come back to it a few months (years) later to give it another go, as sometimes I'm not in the mood for a certain type of book. If it fails to capture my attention a second time, I'll give up.

Library books that I can't get into, I just return (pre-Covid).

Do you re read books?

I used to all the time as a child/teenager, but not so much any more as I have limited reading time, but so many books on my to-read pile!

These days if I do re-read, it's something that I first read 10-20 years ago, so its almost like coming to the book fresh.

Do you write down what you read. Or make lists in anyway ?

I keep a list of the books I've read. I forget so easily (if someone asks me what I've read recently, I'm like "ummmm....."), so it's a nice reminder for me.

For books I might want to read, I have a list in Evernote on my phone. Any time I see a book recommended somewhere which appeals to me, I'll add it to my list. Before I started doing this, I wasted so much time Googling for book titles that I hadn't read and I only had a small amount of information for, but now I type the title/author straight away. Then I can find out more about the books as to whether I want to read them. Or I take screenshots of interesting-looking books i might see on Instagram/Facebook pages etc.

Can someone have too many books to read ?

Short answer - Nope.

Longer answer - there will always be times when you're in the mood for something quite light and uplifting; other times you might want to read something a bit weightier, or you might want to dip into a genre you wouldn't normally go for, so having "too many" books, just gives you lots of choice Smile

highlandcoo · 16/01/2021 20:17

Do you read the entire series one after another?

No, I like a gap in between; I enjoy a series better that way.

Do you stop reading a book if you don’t like it?

Very rarely. I am a completer finisher. And I usually research what I want to read in advance so I know what I would expect to be worth persevering with. But if I think it's rubbish I would.

Do you reread books?

I do sometimes and I usually bet a lot more out of them second time round so I think I should probably do this more often.

Do you write down what you read. Or make lists in anyway ?

I have a really pretty notebook made from recycled saris and I write down the books I've read. It's interesting to look back on. If I can't recall a single detail of a book that means it wasn't very good! And it helps when friends ask for recommendations.
I add books I want to read to my wishlist on Amazon as it's a useful reminder, but I often buy them from World of Books or my local independent bookshop.

Can someone have too many books to read ?

Sometimes I feel sad that I won't read all the books I want to in my lifetime. Last year I read 100 and I think that's probably enough, to allow time to do different things in my life. I have a lot of books and they are my favourite possessions by far.

I'm glad to hear you've caught the reading bug, it really is the best past time!
I will usually have the next book in the series lined up if I've enjoyed the first one so I can just carry on. I tend to have more than one book on the go at a time so I have never felt bored.
I really try to persevere with a book as some take longer to warm up but if it's really not your thing then just leave it. You might feel like trying it again sometime. I think I've only given up on about three books ever.
I definitely have my favourites that I re read over and over.
I will make a note of books that I would like to read, especially if a book comes up in conversation or a recommendation.
You can never have too many books!
Enjoy!

Do you read the entire series one after another Not necessarily. Do you stop reading if you don’t like a book Yes, I frequently stop reading a book if I’m not enjoying it, often I’ll pause through one I do enjoy to start another too! Do you reread books? Yes, absolutely. I find rereading my favourites very relaxing. Do you write down what you have read? No, it’s never occurred to me to write any books down... but I have accidentally reread a few, so that’s a good idea. Can you have too many books Nope. But a kindle helps with storage!
SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 16/01/2021 21:30

@Witchend. Continuity errors! One of the best was in a library book. Central character had been happily walking somewhere. Presumably, author had stopped writing for the day or gone off and partaken of the gin next mention of her, same journey, she is driving! Not the only one to be frustrated by it, someone else had written (in pencil) "Car?! What car?!" Tickled me no end. Grin

HearMeSnore · 16/01/2021 21:32
  1. If I can, yes. Sometimes I get into a series when it's still in progress and it's agony waiting for the next book to come out. If they're all available, I go for it. One after the other.
  2. Yes. Life is too short to waste time on books that don't do it for me. If it hasn't grabbed me in the first 30 pages or so, I can't be arsed.
  3. Yes. If I want to remind myself what happened before reading a sequel. It is a lot of extra reading time but it's a worthwhile investment when it enhances enjoyment of the continuing story. Re-reading is usually a bit quicker than the first read, anyway. I also re-read just for the fun of it, sometimes. I've got a dozen of so "comfort reads" that come out when I'm stressed or sad. Re-reading an old favourite is like therapy.
  4. No. I have a kind of map in my head of books I've read, books I want to read, and books I own but haven't read yet. I've never yet lost track. However I do use the Amazon wish list as a way of reminding myself what's coming up that I'd like to read, recommendations and the like.
  5. Yes and no. I've probably got more books than I'll ever actually get around to reading. I bought each one intending to read it, but I get distracted, my mood changes, I find something else to read instead and the pile grows... But does that mean the same thing as "too many?" I'd say it's only too many if you put pressure on yourself to read everything you own, or to read the worthy literature over the entertaining pop fiction. If it stops being a pleasure and becomes a chore, or you feel overwhelmed then yes... that's too many books to read.
