Has anyone done the Mumsnet haircut string lockdown? I’m attempting it tonight...I used to do it all the time year ago, and the ends at getting a bit split and frizzy so tonight’s the night!!

I always do it and it’s fine. Better with wavy hair but still ok now mines lost its curl. Go a bit longer than you think-you can always go again!

dudsville · 15/01/2021 16:05

I've done this solely for the last two and a half years. I get compliments, but I do not move in a fashionable world. I would only caution that you consider where the pony tail sits. This haircut traditional favours a unicorn position at the top of the forehead, but my head is long rather than round so I need to put the ponytail in a more mid crown position in order to even out the layers. Good luck!

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 15/01/2021 16:05

I used to cut my hair using this method all the time years ago, and it always looked alright to be honest...but my hair is long and wavy, like you say, so hides a lot of errors 😁 think I’ll YouTube it to remind me of the method!

Planning it tonight! Been watching on you tube, trying the double unicorn later. 😁

BogRollBOGOF · 15/01/2021 16:16

I use it. My hair is quite long and it can leave the longest bits a bit light so sometimes I'll then take off the longest bits using the pigtails method. No one looks at me and screams.

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 15/01/2021 16:29

@TaighNamGastaOrt we’re both doing it tonight then 😁😁

What is this? Intrigued!!

I apologise to all hairdressers, but I don't think I'll be bothering any of you again.

I have thick, heavy, fairly straight hair. I was never in the habit of going to the hairdressers regularly and I was long overdue for a trim when lockdown hit in March. By June I was desperate and it was getting hot and I was fed up with having long, straggly, sweaty hair. So I took the kitchen scissors and stood in front of the mirror. The MN haircut was in my mind and I did start with a pony tail. My thinking was that hair grows back and I was seeing hardly anyone in the flesh. I just chopped the whole lot off and attempted to make it neat. Later, my husband tidied the back up a bit, but otherwise it was all my own work.

Well. All I can say is I've never had so many compliments on my hair as I've had in the last few months (from people I've seen on Zoom, Teams, brief encounters in the park Grin). Maybe what that says is that it mostly looked dreadful before. But I'm afraid it's led me to believe that I can keep it looking mostly OK with just the occasional trim right here. I will be saving a fortune.

TaighNamGastaOrt · 15/01/2021 17:57

@TwoBigNoisyBoys aye, the haircut? 😁 Are you doing the unicorn too?
Good luck!
Dare we share pics? I'm going to try layering it. My hair is thick, wavy and just past my shoulders, I only had one haircut last year cos of covid so I figure my hair can't look any worse!

MiddleOfThePack · 15/01/2021 18:01

Always do! I cut my own fringe too. I pop to a hairdresser 1/2 times a year absolute max and I have to mentally drag myself there.

50FootWave · 15/01/2021 18:11

@MiddleOfThePack please share your fringe cutting tips!

I usually have a heavy blunt fringe which is now...not fringe like. I can cope with the rest of my hair being a bit scruffy, but I don't feel like me without a fringe!

BogRollBOGOF · 15/01/2021 18:27

For my fringe, I aim for the eyebrows as my line. It curls a bit naturally so it's a fine line on not having a Claudia Winkleman or going too short, although it can take short.

Nyctophyllia · 15/01/2021 18:46

50FootWave: watch this! I do as she does, up to 1m30s. I don't bother much with all the messing about with 'point-cutting' etc as my hair is quite wavy, but you end up with a nicely curved fringe.

Tips: DO NOT trim your fringe when it's 2am and you're pissed. You might then end up cutting above your fingers instead of below and that can be a disaster! And ALWAYS cut half an inch longer than you think.

It actually takes me about a week of snipping very small amounts off until I'm happy - you need to wash/wear a couple of times to be sure it won't bounce up too high once it's dried after a shampoo.

Grooticle · 15/01/2021 19:04

Yeah I don’t think I’ll be back at the hairdressers for years tbh, it turns out it looks exactly the same done at home in the mirror and nobody makes inane conversation with me about my holidays.

Rockbird · 15/01/2021 19:05

I've been doing it since 2009. Stylish, me Grin. It's always fine, I know exactly what I'm doing now.

LagneyandCasey · 15/01/2021 19:08

Oooh before and after pics please op!

You have gorgeous hair Bumwart21

50FootWave · 15/01/2021 19:25

Thanks, @MiddleOfThePack!

Advice noted....

PilatesPeach · 15/01/2021 19:29

I am bubbling with my best friend - he is a painter/decorator/handyman. He does my roots - same principle as cutting in when painting and he trims the back of my long straight hair when wet using my hairdressing scissors and I do my fringe when dry. We only started this last summer and previously I used to go for a wet cut every 8 weeks at £33.

SatsumasOrClementines · 15/01/2021 19:43

The layers in this haircut are extreme. For lots of people it’s really not a good look (present company excluded of course. You run the risk of a weird mullet type fringe with a step in the back.

The Brad Mondo version comes out a lot better.

MiddleOfThePack · 15/01/2021 20:07

SatsumasOrClementines: the disasters are when you cut it all the same length and too short. Always go long and you can cut in a shorter fringe later. I love Brad, but hate his technique. Far too much faff for me!

TaighNamGastaOrt · 16/01/2021 16:52

So I did it last night. went fairly well, took the ends off. its not perfect but nobudy going to see it! I tried to upload before/after pics from my phone but no joy!
@TwoBigNoisyBoys how did you get on?
I ended up chopping stepdaughters hair too-looks much better and easier to brush! Grin

Tier10 · 16/01/2021 17:05

I’ve just trimmed my fringe, coloured my roots and tinted my eyebrows. I look pretty damn good (from
a social distance of 2 meters).
