DFS, what if my sofa doesn't fit?

smoothchange · 14/01/2021 23:20

Silly I know but I have ordered new sofas online and they are due to be delivered in 4 weeks, just waiting for them to contact me to arrange it. After a 4 month wait I have suddenly become very nervous in case they don't fit in my house 🙄

So if they don't, will I get a refund or am I going to have to pick another sofa that I don't want??

Lighthearted...

You can have your window taken out and put in through there. Can you not measure and see if they will fit through your doors?

Freddiefox · 14/01/2021 23:37

I really wanted a loaf sofa and I inputted my door measurements on the system and it came back as too big, thing is our doors are just normal size, so not many people would have been able to buy the sofa.

A different sofa we had from dfs was too big and they took the legs and arms off so it fitted

smoothchange · 14/01/2021 23:39

Take out my window Shock that's a definite no!!

Bits of it come off for ease of delivery it says, so we measured as best we could Grin

As you purchased online, you have the right to cancel the order within 14 days of delivery, unless any aspect of it was custom made of made to order. However, DFS’s Ts&Cs allow them to deduct up to 20% from the purchase price to cover the costs of collecting and transporting the returned goods: m.dfs.co.uk/content/terms-and-conditions

If you have double glazing popping the window out whilst you put the sofa in isn’t as drastic as it sounds. Helps if you know someone who can do it at short notice though.

Thanks. It seems to only apply to sofas that are not custom made though haha!

My dad removed my front door and internal doors to get a sofa in my house once. It gained the extra couple of inches we needed.

whatnow41 · 15/01/2021 00:05

We bought from DFS about 10 yrs in a flat and it was a corner sofa. They couldn't deliver it as it didn't fit, but back a week later with it in 2 pieces and a leather expert who stitched it all up perfectly. We sold the flat 3 yrs later and very kindly left the sofa as part of the deal! Grin

smoothchange · 15/01/2021 00:05

@ComtesseDeSpair

Sorry I realise you said that!!

They are mostly custom made aren't they? You ordered to your own spec? I changed the feet and added the better filling so that's definitely custom but even if I hadn't they would still have been making it to fulfil my order

When I moved house the movers popped my front window out to remove the sofas- the sofas had been bought by the previous owners and then left in the house, so I don’t know how they got them in. The movers tried a few angles for getting them out the hallway but it wasn’t working. It was really quick and easy- there are sort of “release” points in the double glazing, to apply pressure to and lift the whole pane out. Obviously it was with my permission and if anything had happened they wouldn’t have been liable. It was really quick and easy- they’d obviously done it before many times. Pane out, sofa through, pane back in. I gave them £20 cash in hand for it ha. Fortunately at the new house the angle of the stairs and hallway meant to sofas came straight though- just as well as there isn’t a large front window here!

One of the internal doors we could probably take off but the front door definitely not.

That a risk I definitely can't afford to take Shock

Honestly, it was really easy and didn’t feel like much of a risk at any point... and, well, what’s the alternative? Return the sofa? Attached some pics of them doing it.

Just take the glass out. It's not hard

smoothchange · 15/01/2021 00:18

It's a huge risk because if anything happens and the window for broken I would be liable and I don't have the money. Also we are back and forth still with the window company as they are under guarantee and I wouldn't want to jeopardise that.

BogRollBOGOF · 15/01/2021 00:18

Our sofa went in OK, then the feet were put on in the room
Getting it out a few years later was more interesting... out the patio doors, slide the fence up, through the neighbours garden and out their side gate (more space, and yes they were happy to oblige Grin )

smoothchange · 15/01/2021 00:19

I don't want to, I'm not sure how many times I need to repeat it.

Also I was trying to be light hearted at the idea of them not fitting. No need to be so rude.

Well, you’ll have to return the sofa then 🤷‍♀️

It's not hard to take the glass out. How's that rude?! Don't do it if you don't want to but then you mightn't fit the sofa in

'Just take the glass out. It's not hard' - it's how you said it. Oh, and the fact that I already said that wasn't an option.

Don't do it if you don't want to but then you mightn't fit the sofa in

Erm: yes. That is the whole point of my light fucking hearted thread. It was a bit hahaha am I going to have to pick a shit sofa. That was all.

I have had this happen twice🙈
The first time the delivery men were horrid. Shouted at me when I was heavily pregnant and made me cry. They took the sofas back and the company refunded me less a fee of around £60-80. It wasn't dfs though it was a local leather sofa company.
The second time the delivery men were fab and took my window out at my risk. I understand why you don't want to do this though. I get the heeby geebies occasionally when I think of how we will ever remove the sofa.
Buying a new sofa is actually quite traumatic now. I don't know why you can't have them delivered in parts.

Foobydoo · 15/01/2021 00:33

I mean the customer have them delivered in teo parts not you personally. I think some companies actually this and they fix together like a divan bed does.
