what would your dream career be?

If you had to be really specific, what would your dream career be?

I have a fantasy of sitting in my plant room in my big glass house overlooking the beach on my laptop working while I help people to redesign their lives to get the perfect balance between lifestyle, finances, family, career etc. I couldn't think of anything more rewarding than making people feel so excited because they feel their dream life is a reality. I would have no idea how to go about this myself. Any pointers?

I'd love to bake really fancy cakes for high class events! Or run a countryside tea shop (I know this is hard work, have done it and love it, would love to be the owner).

LadyJaye · 14/01/2021 19:08

Tbh, I'm not a massive kick in the arse off mine right now.

I work from home, at senior level in STEM, using a lot of systems and design thinking to drive innovation and have exactly the right 'Goldilocks' (not too much, not too little) level of human interaction for me! Nobody knows if I have a glass of wine with lunch, either.

The only thing that would make it better would be more kittens.

I had my dream job a few years back, working in pastoral support with students from all over the world, organising wee social events to help them get to know each other and taking them on trips. It was only mat leave cover but I loved it so much. I met so many great people who I’m still friends with and learned a massive amount about different cultures. I tasted food from places I’d never imagined I would. So I’m always looking for something like that again.

Either that or buyer of beautiful Scandi children’s clothes Grin

Voice actor. I did it for a while in my early twenties on a specific set of adverts and I loved every moment of it and the pay was amazing.

It's nearly impossible to get a full time career out of it as there are already a handful of voice actors in England who do the majority of the big work.

Iamthewombat · 15/01/2021 11:20

Finchy from The Office appears to do 50% of the voiceovers!

PolloDePrimavera · 15/01/2021 11:57

In a TV wardrobe dept.

WankPuffins · 15/01/2021 12:46

Writing for television.

sneakysnoopysniper · 15/01/2021 12:54

Ive has a number of careers - civil servant, librarian, academic and many many part time jobs of various kinds from working in a chip shop to being a film extra.

Whenever I worked for a large corporation I always wanted to run my own lifestyle business. By "lifestyle" I meant something that generated enough income for me to get by comfortably but did not require me to work so hard that it took all my time and energy. Im not interested in being a millionaire and that level of responsibility.

I always wanted to be an antiques dealer.

I retired from employed work in 2004 and I now in my 70s run an online business selling antiques and vintage.

Sometimes dreams can be made to come true.

Daftasabroom · 15/01/2021 12:57

Another ex pro sports international here, a champagne lifestyle on a beer income. Loved it but it's not family friendly, wouldn't pay a mortgage, and I got too old and too injured.

I'd like to have been an architect of sustainable and passive homes.

Thesagacontinues · 15/01/2021 14:13

I want to work in NYC with the hustle and bustle of the city. Taxis and restaurants and shops everywhere. Im so bored of WFH alone in the country.

PersonaNonGarter · 15/01/2021 14:17

Theatre Director.

Nearly did it. Glad I didn’t but I know I would have loved it.

Iamthewombat · 15/01/2021 14:21

I would like to have been a city trader. I was too chicken to try when I graduated: I was clever enough but put off by having to live in London and work with abrasive posh city types who at that time (early nineties) wouldn’t have been kind to a northern woman from a comp!

I’m now an accountant, and very senior, but I still wish that I’d given it a go. Not for the money, particularly, but for the buzz and excitement.

Mummydoctor · 15/01/2021 14:21

I love my job as a GP but I’d rather be an interior designer!

Liverbird77 · 15/01/2021 14:22

Absolute dream would be to work with Larry David writing comedy and to also be a voiceover artist, specifically on a cartoon like South Park.

WhatAreWordsWorth · 15/01/2021 14:29

Dancer/choreographer.

I always wonder how life would’ve turned out if I’d pursued it. I took the sensible route, did a degree and got a full time job instead. I regret it, fleetingly. Although my chosen path did lead me to my wonderful DH, which is something that I never regret, not for one second.

Missushbb · 15/01/2021 14:33

@speakout

I love what I do.

Working in a creative field, from home, self employed, well paid.
Lots of time for yoga, forest walks, tea breaks.
Can't imagine doing anything else.

This sounds good? What do you do?
GypsyLee · 15/01/2021 14:44
@GypsyLee, are your studies more traditional or of modern day? Are there major differences in the culture nowadays or are there still elements of the old traditions which must be adhered to?

Must be fascinating to research, years back I remember seeing a traditional painted van pulled by a gorgeous Vanner, I often wonder what happened to the older generation who preferred the simpler life.

I find the some of the programmes on telly a bit sneery, perhaps the same with all walks of life, they concentrate on the individuals who make ‘good/car crash viewing.
Hi, not to derail this thread. I have quite a long thread in AMA I'm a gypsiologist"
I spend a long time researching a both past and present, and love learning about the migration.
It was providing a good income as we set the story to music and it travelled the UK until all the venues closed.
No income now, really.

Popsy321 · 15/01/2021 14:46

@umpteennamechanges

I'm in mine now.

I help other women figure out what they want to do with their life and then make it a reality.

I get all kinds of jobs coming up. Most tend to go towards having different income streams (like a portfolio career).

Some examples:

 • Ethical bee keeper and part time marketing consultant
 • Swim school, mediator and magistrate
 • Sales coach, coach for aspiring music artists and part time bid manager
 • Hypnotherapist
 • Antique dealer, crafter and part time marketing consultant for small, quirky, women led businesses
 • Potter
MLM life coach then.
GypsyLee · 15/01/2021 14:48

What is MLM?

tigerbear · 15/01/2021 14:49

@Elderflower14 damn right!! 😍

Lofu · 15/01/2021 14:49

I want to name paint colours.

I will lie on a couch in a conservatory office by the sea, and people will bring me swatches. I'll look at them very intently then shout out something inspired like 'penguin tears!'

Everyone applauds. I get paid millions.
