I'm beginning to think that I do Blush
I've rung doctors, chemist etc the odd time but nothing regular and each time it's oh is that Aries? And I'm like yeeeeees. How do they know? Feel a bit self conscious now!

Haha yes, I've been described as sounding "like Barbie went to finishing school" Blush!! And I sound waaay younger than I am. It's very recognisable!! I hate how I clearly sound nothing like I think I do (or how I'd like to come across).

Strokethefurrywall · 14/01/2021 13:18

I have a distinctive voice which apparently sounds like I should be reading Jackanory stories for kids. Got told that when I called a radio station once.

LuvMyBoyz · 14/01/2021 13:26

Only because I never lost my original accent despite moving here40 years ago.

No.
After hearing myself these past two weeks on the videos I’ve sent my class, my voice is anything but distinctive 🤦🏼‍♀️

MrsMoastyToasty · 14/01/2021 13:32

No, I think I'm like Father Fitzgerald who has the most boring voice in Father Ted. I used to have to play back recordings of my conversations when I worked in a call centre and missed a vital bit of information.

bearlyactive · 14/01/2021 13:39

I think I have a horrible weird nasal voice, and A LOT higher than it sounds in my head. Whether it's distinctive or not, I have no idea, although I always got bullied for being "posh" at school.

MillieEpple · 14/01/2021 13:44

i think my family have a distinctive voice. Me, my mum, my sister and my aunt on the maternal side are basically interchangeable. I hear a voice message and don't know which of us has spoken.

But people do recognise 'us' on the phone. they just aren't sure which of us they have.

Sheleg · 14/01/2021 13:46

Mine is like a cinder under a door.

FlibbertyGiblets · 14/01/2021 13:46

YAIRS EYE DO [Brian Blessed face]

BogRollBOGOF · 14/01/2021 13:53

I have the family voice. My brother recently hung up when I answered because he thought he'd rung the wrong relative. Grin

Probably fairly distinctive locally as I have a very generic,not-local accent.

AuntieDolly · 14/01/2021 13:53

Perhaps your name comes up on the phone

EssentialHummus · 14/01/2021 13:56

Yup, strangest accent ever here.

Chimeraforce · 14/01/2021 14:01

Yes but it's monotone must be part of aspergers. Oh well at least I sing well 🤣🤣

SimonJT · 14/01/2021 14:20

Yes, my accent is a weird mix of Pakistani, Nottinghamshire and North London. I now have a bit of a nasal voice now as well as I broke my nose a few years ago.

SarahAndQuack · 14/01/2021 14:22

No, because I do that annoying thing of having no stable accent - so I end up gravitating towards a bad imitation of whoever I'm talking to. Or just randomly shift.

Cam2020 · 14/01/2021 14:27

I was about to say the same thing!

BearSoFair · 14/01/2021 14:32

I don't think so but like you OP people seem to instantly recognise my voice on the phone so maybe!

One of my friends sounds EXACTLY like MIL on the phone, it freaks DH out if he ever picks up the landline and it's her Grin

SpudsandGravy · 14/01/2021 14:38

Mine is quite deep. Sometimes I've been taken for a bloke on the phone Hmm

dontgobaconmyheart · 14/01/2021 14:55

No not at all. Honestly I don't think I'd actually say I know anyone with a particularly distinctive voice although I know plenty of people I'm sure think they do as a self imposed POI or who try to make one happen. Each to their own.

Everyone has some sort of distinctive element to their voice ultimately or we would all sound the same. I think there are a few famous people with distinct voices, but again I'm sure in part that is the deliberate exaggeration of the thing that pulls the money in. In real life they'd almost all sound ridiculous if they spoke that way.

PearlescentIridescent · 14/01/2021 14:59

Yes I do but not in a good way. It is very high pitched and I sound like a child when I can hear myself echoed back. To me it sounds highish but normal but when I hear recordings it makes me cringe :(

Was going to apply for a job I wanted in higher education but it involved narrating audio recordings of the course materials and I didn't apply thinking, who wants to listen to a six year old teach them degree material Hmm

PearlescentIridescent · 14/01/2021 15:00

I'd love a smokey sultry or husky voice! To me those voices are very distinctive in a good way. My voice is also a bit breathy which IMO makes me sound unfit Blush

SarahAndQuack · 14/01/2021 15:01

Do you ever try pitching it lower, @PearlescentIridescent? I pitch mine lower when lecturing because the sound carries better - not stupid panto-style, but just a little.

(This also reminds me: my DP's voice isn't particularly distinctive, but her pitch is: her spoken voice is slightly on the deep side for a woman, but her singing voice is really high and girly. Gave me a real shock the first time I heard her warbling away! Grin)

PearlescentIridescent · 14/01/2021 15:01

@FlibbertyGiblets Grin

purpleme12 · 14/01/2021 15:03

I know I do
From what people have said/say
Some people just do. You can't help your voice

PearlescentIridescent · 14/01/2021 15:06

@SarahAndQuack I do try to in meetings but I feel it comes across as imitating others or put on! And the problem is I am quite soft spoken so I revert back to it anyway. I have tried pitching it lower and I liked it and I can fall into that cadence reading stories to my kids, but it reverts back and I get scared it will sound odd. It also means I can't sing at all because there is no power in my voice whatsoever. Urgh pathetic wet towel voice Angry

I work in a job now where most of my communication comes over the phone to people who don't know me in person and I'm worried I am judged stereotypically but I'm very competent at work. I liked the novelty of people finding it appealing when younger but now I'm trying to progress my career and make a good impression to multiple people who have never met me it makes me self conscious.
