Let's go back to the 90s...

I'm feeling nostalgic. I'd give anything to go back and live another of my 90s weekends.

Saturday morning was spent impatiently waiting for my horse riding lesson whilst watching Thundercats. The afternoon usually involved a trip into town with my mum in our Rover 214 to go to C&A, before we all watched Gladiators (Ace was my favourite and my dad fancied Lightning), then Casualty.

Sundays meant church, which my parents only subjected us to in order to get me into the local church school. We either went to Sunday school or spent what felt like hours kneeling on the bloody cold stone church floor doing colouring whilst vaguely listening to the vicar drone on.

On Sundays we were permitted to eat lunch (sandwiches and crinkle crisps) on our laps whilst watching Thunderbirds. Then it was the smell of roast spuds cooking whilst listening to the pools results being read out. Sunday evenings meant THE FEAR of going back to school on Monday morning whilst watching Heartbeat.

I'd love to hear what others did and what your favourite memories are, no matter what age you were.

Those were the days! I was 16 in 1995. Feels like a lifetime ago now.

When I was still at school I was all about pouting, coffee shimmer and blue eyeliner. I am wearing verifies platforms and skinny tops with either a Levi's denim jacket which I gave away ffs or a fit coat I bought in the chazza. I lived in herts then and we went to clubs in london at the weekends to see bands and go to mod nights all over the place. I had blonde hair down to my bum and I was about a size 4. I had my own style but I didn't realise at the time.

I was die hard into oasis and was very scornful about take that fans. I went to oasis at Earl's Court and knebworth since it was a couple of miles away.

I thought going to uni would be the same but better but it wasn't as good.

97/2000 I was at uni in Leicester. It was alright. It wasn't as fun as the home countries in the mid 90's.

I was a teen in the 90s....Peppermint foot lotion from the Body Shop, Dewberry and White Musk perfume. Listening to Radiohead and Nirvana in the park with friends. Euro96, pubs and football followed by drive thru Mcds. Shopped at Topshop, Bay Trading and Morgan. Pizza Express was posh. The summers seemed endless

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 13/01/2021 18:36

Friday nights in the early 90s were all about my group of friends going to the sports centre at the "other place" (our school had a sister school - which has been used as a film set because it's pretty - where the facilities were much better but we loathed each other) because that was our exclusive use night. We would go swimming for a bit then get dressed and leer at the boys playing squash. Back to my friends house to stay overnight, then walk to the park or other friends house next day before going up to the football if our team was playing at home.

I sound really sporty but actually just liked looking at fit lads Blush

I forgot bay trading existed until now

Very early 90's was when I lined with my mum in her tiny house that had almost nothing in it. Everything was what her very eccentric friends turned up with because they were given it or they found it at a car boot. We were very very poor but I had no idea when I was a kid. My mum made it ok for me. No one had iPhones in 1990 anyway.
Oh Tuesdays I had a babysitter who watched dads army with me but I had to go to bed when freshfields came on. My mum was teaching literacy to adults in the library up the road. Sometimes they would just randomly knock on the door because they had a form to fill in or maybe a job interview. My mum knew everyone

On Saturdays it was catchphrase and gladiators and then my mum would come and watch blind date with me.

Such a happy and carefree years

Pyewhacket · 13/01/2021 18:42

1992 I came back to the UK and went to live with my grandparents on their Dorset farm. Saved my life. Used to finish school and go straight to the beach with my friends. I learnt so much from my grandparents, mainly a strong work ethic, responsibility and care for animals and the importance of family. After such an awful life in France with my mother it was like being set free. I cherish those memories

DrCoconut · 13/01/2021 19:32

@ssd I couldn't put it better. There was a sense of hope and optimism that is just absent now. 1995 was the long hot summer. I had just finished my A levels and spent the time before uni just hanging around with friends, going out, seeing my boyfriend who I was madly in love with and just being really. No big worries and a whole life and world to look forward to. I was part of the doc martens, floaty skirts and hippy shops crowd too. I still love a good hippy shop but they seem rare now. Everyone seems so much more stressed now. I'm sure people did have stress in 1995, I'm talking about generally though, I think life was simpler still. .

On Sundays we watch Ballykissangel and have tea in front of the TV in the living room. We are not allowed to eat in this room on any other day but on Sundays we have toast and crumpets and home made cake and watch TV.
The thought of Niamh and Ambrose and ... 💔

Btw I recommend subscribing to BritBox even just for the free week ... The Demon Headmaster! Jonathan Creek!

nevernotstruggling · 13/01/2021 20:48

I just remembered Friday night tv. Whose line is it anyway, the word and kids in the hall. Magic.
Like others it makes me think how lucky and happy we were.

The Labour landslide in 1997 was amazing. My parents waited so long for that I couldn't believe it happened.

nevernotstruggling · 13/01/2021 20:49

@SallyOMalley

It's the mid 90s and I'm at uni in Sheffield. We're going to the Octagon to see Pulp tonight. I'm wearing my Levi's with a skinny velvet top and a vintage green suede waistcoat. Oh and my Docs!

A few swigs of (terrible) Yugoslavian Riesling and we'll head off down the hill to the uni.

After the gig, we'll head to one of the many student pubs, smoke too many marlboro lights and have a few pints. Then we'll stagger back up the hill and home for cheese toasties.

That sounds like utter heaven
UserMcNewName · 13/01/2021 20:55

The 90s smells of body shop dewberry or white musk spray.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 13/01/2021 21:03

Mid 90s I started secondary school. I've got clumpy boys shoes, a long skirt and four scrunchies holding my ponytail up (we used to wear them to make a sort of flower effect with a very tight pony). I have a Nike bag but I will trade it in for a big blue Umbro one. I don't have many other clothes and if I get asked to go to Body Shop etc with other girls I can only afford a lip balm. I am listening to Dr Fox and watching TOTP. I enjoy Gladiators and the X Men cartoon. I am not allowed to stay up and watch Friends. I am a lonely little girl.

AndThenTheDayBecomesTheNight · 13/01/2021 21:31

Reportage on the BBC2 yoof slot, with Aminatta Forna. Beverly Hills 90210.

DMs with rainbow or tartan laces. Batik or tie-dye tops in floaty materials. Flowery dresses. Long skirts with tassels. Crochet hats. My dad's old duffle coat.

Indie nights. Radiohead, Elastica, Travis, the Frank and Walters, the Candyskins. Buying NME to try and keep up with the cool ones.

Going vegetarian when it was just starting to be a thing. Linda McCartney ready meals. Quorn. Pesto being terribly sophisticated.

Smoking inside. The college bar selling single cigarettes. Vodka and orange.

A sense of optimism. Staying up all election night in 1997.

Daisychainsandglitter · 13/01/2021 21:43

LouLou198 · 13/01/2021 23:10

So many lovely memories. Used to meet my friend every Saturday in town. We had to arrange a time in advance and stick to it as we had no mobiles. We spent our money on bliss magazine, body shop soap, Woolworths pic n mix and impulse 02! I had cherry red DM's and wore with dresses. I've actually just bought myself a new pair, I don't remember them being so difficult to break in!

TartanDMs · 13/01/2021 23:57

This has made me so nostalgic! I found some photos out the other day of a school trip to Paris where we were allowed to run around unsupervised in the evening because we were the 'senior' girls (group of 4 friends, all aged 14/15, as opposed to the 10 younger girls who were 12/13). We had the time of our lives, busking in the metro, seeing the sights, with barely any money so most meals were a McDonalds or a self serve. Heaven knows what our teachers were thinking, giving us that freedom! As long as we didn't smoke or bring disgrace on the school name, they were very liberal.

Late 90s, I was 17 and had a 30 year old boyfriend. I thought he was the bees knees but had to suppress my enthusiasm for 90s culture because he declared it all crap - hated Britpop, hated what I wore, thought all my friends were idiots. He introduced me to 80s culture and music in a big way - he was an abusive arsehole but he did leave me with a really great knowledge of some obscure music that I really enjoy. I thought my 90s music that I loved was childish though because of his opinions and stopped listening to it. I didn't realise at the time but I became a shadow of myself.

Then at the end of the 90s I met DH, who was even older than the knobhead and so theoretically should have been even more dismissive about the 90s. But he wasn't, and he introduced me to punk and glam rock as well, and slowly I went back to being me again and having confidence, listening to Oasis and Pulp and Suede, wearing current fashion and not walking on eggshells. He even had DMs! Grin

Most of my 90s early teen years were extremely boring I'm afraid (I used to put what I'd eaten that day in my diary just to fill it up!). However the summer of 98 or 99 can't quite remember now was great. The days seemed to go on and never end. Just going out on my bike, (with a cd walkman on and no helmet, looking back so dangerous obviously but you think you're indestructible then), nights in the pub, parties with blackcurrant hooch or cinzano and lemonade.

One morning after a party where we camped in someone's garden I woke needing the loo but the folks had locked the house and it was 5.30am so I didn't want to wake them. There was a field across the road so off I went in my strappy red polka dot dress and oversized tan leather jacket and doc martins giving a cheery "morning!" to an old man walking his dog on the way. 41 year old me is aghast, thinking just wee in the garden, you never know who's about and no one knows where you've gone!! But teenage me loves the serenity of the morning and feels completely safe. I was off to uni soon and the world felt full of possibilities.

Insert1x20p · 14/01/2021 02:06

I went to Uni 1993-96. Only about 3 people I knew had a mobile and only "computer science" students used email. If you wanted to contact someone you wrote a note, cycled over to their college and stuck it in their "pigeon hole". Had to handwrite everything which meant even if you plagerised off your friends in the year above you had to copy it out so you learned something :-).

Moved to London in 1996 - Boot leg jeans. Chain wine bars with wooden floors. Buying the Independent on Wednesdays for the Bridget Jones column (before the book). Going down to the tube station on Sunday evening to renew your travelcard to avoid the Monday morning queues. Starbucks opened near our flat and we were like "but why would you buy a coffee when you can get one at home for free?" - ha ha, if only we'd known. House prices went up massively and we all talked about how they'd probably peaked- ha ha, if only we'd known.

Around 97 I remember discovering South Park one night when we got home from the pub and thinking we'd dreamed it the next day.
