Let's go back to the 90s...

I'm feeling nostalgic. I'd give anything to go back and live another of my 90s weekends.

Saturday morning was spent impatiently waiting for my horse riding lesson whilst watching Thundercats. The afternoon usually involved a trip into town with my mum in our Rover 214 to go to C&A, before we all watched Gladiators (Ace was my favourite and my dad fancied Lightning), then Casualty.

Sundays meant church, which my parents only subjected us to in order to get me into the local church school. We either went to Sunday school or spent what felt like hours kneeling on the bloody cold stone church floor doing colouring whilst vaguely listening to the vicar drone on.

On Sundays we were permitted to eat lunch (sandwiches and crinkle crisps) on our laps whilst watching Thunderbirds. Then it was the smell of roast spuds cooking whilst listening to the pools results being read out. Sunday evenings meant THE FEAR of going back to school on Monday morning whilst watching Heartbeat.

I'd love to hear what others did and what your favourite memories are, no matter what age you were.

@lots33

Age 15. Boarding school. Saturday morning prep, followed by the Chart Show, wholesome activity in the afternoon ( Brass rubbing anyone? 😂) back to the boarding house for tv. Trying to watch dirty dancing and whipping if off quickly if we heard the house mistress. Hot dogs for supper for a treat. More tv - Blind date, gladiators, Casualty. Nipping to the woods for fags and using body spray.

Sunday - wholesome day trip. Or more tv and sneaking off for fags. Waiting for the weekly boarders to return hopefully with chocolate. Sunday evening chapel.

Mid nineties older teen in London. There was a long, hot summer. Days st the swimming ponds at Hampstead, cadging spliffs. Or mooching around Camden. Evenings at the Black cap in Camden Or the roundhouse. Drinking hooch or Bacardi and coke. Jacobs creek was new and considered terribly sophisticated. Eat as much as you like Indian veggie on Camden high street. Sunday - more of the same. Or up to Oxford street for a mooch with no money.

Oh clothes, so at v naice school, either Levi’s or long floaty skirts both with dms. Ribbed square necked tops/ white t with unbuttoned lumberjack or gypsy top. Long hair with a roll at the top or velvet band.

Later on, again it was dms and jeans, though I, as an out and pride baby dyke, wore my combats rolled up to reveal my dms to their best advantage, along with a white vest and shaved head.

Rainbowsoup · 12/01/2021 22:20

Feeling really grown being trusted to walk to the high street with a friend to go shopping in Tammy girl for big flares jeans and anything gothic, then if it was a special occasion onto Jane Norman for one of their nice bags. Hair mascara, white eyeshadows and blue mascara. Listening to the radio on a Sunday to hear the charts. Reading smash hits, mizz and girl talk. Singing along and making dance routines to Britney Spears and spice girls. Those were the days!

Rainbowsoup · 12/01/2021 22:21

Oh and blockbusters after school on a Friday to choose a film and sweets!

BrutusMcDogface · 12/01/2021 22:24

I actually pine for Saturday nights watching gladiators, blind date and casualty with chips and curry sauce.

I can picture every description on this thread! Good times! I still listen to absolute radio 90s!! 😁

Larsingsong · 12/01/2021 22:26

Me and my friends are 14 and have different sweatershop jumpers on, with shirts underneath with jeans. Maybe some fila or reebok trainers.

Home highlighted hair and thick foundation with tidemarks. Walking the streets, arms linked, singing along to our favourite pop songs and talking about boys.

BrutusMcDogface · 12/01/2021 22:26

Oh and that smell that Blockbuster Video had- was it just mi local one, or did they all smell like sweaty teenage boys?! I feel sorry for my kids that they’ll never experience choosing a film to rent, getting big bags of snacks etc and then arguing over who should return it! 🤣

RaggieDolls · 12/01/2021 22:27

The nostalgia! I started uni in 1999 so grew up in 90's. Could get served almost anywhere from 15, DMs, Body Shop, Oasis.

Take me back now!!

BrutusMcDogface · 12/01/2021 22:27

The River Island carrier bags. I was more of a coffee shimmer than heather, though.

grafittiartist · 12/01/2021 22:28

Sixth form and art college- happy days!
Moscow mules, silk cut/ Marlboro lights, docs, Reading, pints, cameras with film, floral dresses, bean burgers from Burger King, student rail card, Vic and Bob. Ah!!

Lovely memories.
But I didn't feel "settled" - now I am older and have my own family I feel much more "myself". Would like to visit, but not do again I think!

BrutusMcDogface · 12/01/2021 22:29

@RaggieDolls - you’re the same age as me! Remember seeing in the new millennium as a brand new student?! Ah, what a night that was!

Splodgetastic · 12/01/2021 22:29

I would trade a year of life for toffos to be brought back.

BrutusMcDogface · 12/01/2021 22:30

I don’t think I want to go back necessarily, but I’d like to do some of the things with my kids. The Saturday night tv just isn’t the same; I hate things like X factor and nobody other than me in my house likes strictly.

Rainbowsoup · 12/01/2021 22:31

Gosh this thread does make me worry...what will our children remember of their time now?

MeanMrMustardSeed · 12/01/2021 22:32

1997 and I’m 17. Drinking pints of Fosters Tops, smoking Marlboro lights and wearing two vest tops. The music was amazing. In the sixth form common room we listened to 1977, Free Peace Sweet and anything by the Manics. It was the perfect life.

Splodgetastic · 12/01/2021 22:34

I have to say, life was way more exciting then. Like a PP said, waiting to hear who was number one, getting an actual letter (maybe a birthday card with cheque?), the Body Shop bath pearls, going to a foreign country and not knowing what it would be like until you got there and no means of communicating with back home apart from letter or fax, smoking, pizzas, Doc Marten’s, orchestra away weekend, MD 20/20...

Miljea · 12/01/2021 22:35

I missed the 90s.

I only realised watching the London Olympic opening ceremony; so many of the soaps depicted. Nope! No idea! That's because I lived in Oz, in the 90s, aged 26 ish+

I work with many younger people who recall the 90s as their Big Decade! 😊

Mine was the 80s, I guess.

longhaulstress · 12/01/2021 22:37

Friday nights having a early tea with my sisters so my parents could have their cheese and wine night in peace. Then me and sister 2 would retreat to front room to watch Ellen, friends and Fraser.

Saturday morning gymnastics then meeting friends in town to go to Tammy Girl, body shop for the animal bath pearls and Woolies for pick-n-mix and latest cassette of single I liked.
Fish and chips for tea in front of all the good tv back at home.

Sunday's lazy, roast dinner for lunch. Feeling full and sleepy on the sofa with a book while a football match was on in the background. Dragged out for a dog walk then On to my nans house for a buffet tea. Absolutely no toys there and nothing to do but we made our own fun using random ornaments or playing out in the yard. Antiques roadshow music used to make me feel 'the fear' of going back to school the next day.

Cookiebear3 · 12/01/2021 22:38

Aww this is a lovely thread.
Early 90’s im watching The Bill, noels house party and gladiators with my family. Going to my nanas for the school holidays and playing with my friends all summer not a care in the world. Taping the top 10 off the radio.

Later 90’s im having sleepovers with my friends, the boys are allowed to stay till 10pm then we put makeup (badly) on each other and listen to cds and have to change them no playlists then. Going to local underage discos and spending sundays watching the sunset beach omnibus on channel 5 with my tea in my room.
I miss those days so much

bellagogosdead · 12/01/2021 22:41

Splodgetastic · 12/01/2021 22:45

Last of the summer wine was my school fear trigger music 🤢
Splodgetastic · 12/01/2021 22:47

Anyone remember the polar bear soap that was coconut scented from Body Shop?

sorrygru · 12/01/2021 22:49

Yep, the Heartbeat theme tune still strikes school fear into my heart (I'm now a TA Grin)

Lol Noel's House Party! Used to watch it getting ready to go out, and blind date. Camden Palace, Electric Ballroom, some other truly dive place in Turnpike Lane where all the crusties and their dogs would get scrapping with each other. I'm wearing baby doll dresses, ripped ofc, tights and army boots, I've got bright blonde hair and dark red lipstick and I shag everything that moves. All my vinyl is coloured and limited edition and I think I'm a bit of an intellectual because I've got poetry quotes pinned inside my wardrobe for everyday inspiration. I add a new one for each conquest, chosen carefully to suit.

I am, in short, a bit of a twat but I'm unstoppable and having the time of my life in a grubby, ragged London that isn't there any more.

Honeyroar · 12/01/2021 22:50

Best decade of my life.
1990 - worked in Italy teaching riding with my best friend for a year.
92-3 au pairing in Paris. Had a ball! Took my A level french out there.
93- went to uni aged 23. Had another ball! Indie nights out. Watching Gladiators before we went out.

95 - year out in Provence teaching English.
97- got a job as cabin crew for a long haul airline. Couldn’t believe my luck to be jetting around the world and partying in the Caribbean etc.
