Anyone else's DC having the same lunch EVERY day?

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/01/2021 13:24

Every single day, they want the same things - beans and toast for DS, eggs on toast for DD. I don't really mind, as neither are particularly unhealthy choices (we use the low salt, no added sugar beans) and they always have fruit afterwards, but Jesus, don't they get bored?

Actually, now I think about that, they always have the same breakfast too. Dinner is the only varied meal, and that's because I choose it.

Yes, I know this is a boring thread. It's a boring time!

I’d happily eat the same thing for lunch every day! I think it comes from being a poor student and bulk buying stuff. DH is the complete opposite and likes variety! The kids are happy to eat whatever.

Smallfry79 · 12/01/2021 19:37

This thread is making me feel better. We are all fussy eaters really but just today I was trying to think of something new for ds (8) with no success. He eats peanut butter, jam, banana, nutella or cheddar cheese (not melted) every day of the year.
I try to limit the nutella so left with the others. He has them with white sluced pan, brown bread, bagel or cream crackers.
Snacks are petit filous, apple, yop or grapes.
I am bored presenting it everyday.
I take comfort that Im not alone and there might even be some a little worse off.
Its hard not to worry about lack of protein and over abundance of sugar.

frustrationcentral · 12/01/2021 19:39

@poorbuthappy

I bought a toastie maker / grill thing from Aldi on the weekend so expect months of melted wraps / toasties / paninis here.

I would also go and shares in whichever company supplies Aldi mature cheddar cheese. We are going through tonnes of the stuff each week.

DS2 got a panini press for Christmas and ever since that's been the favoured lunch - paninis, ciabatta, wraps, toasties and focaccias with a variety of fillings.

DH has had the same lunch every day since I have known him, about 16 years. Cheese sandwich, cherry bakewell, packet of crisps and a chocolate bar.

Now he is WFH he has branched out and has a toasted cheese sandwich.

HappyAsASandboy · 12/01/2021 19:47

My kids got bored of sandwiches every day for lunch during the last lockdown. This time I have taken the school lunch menu and planned those for lunch (mostly, some adaptations), and then planned smaller or lighter dinners. They seem to work better in the afternoon after a hot lunch, though I can only manage to make it because I'm on maternity leave at the moment!

LadyCatStark · 12/01/2021 19:48

DS (11) asked for a bowl of plain spaghetti on the first day of this lockdown, which I provided as I was on an all day Zoom training course for work and it was easier than arguing and he then announced that he would be having it every day for the rest of homeschooling 🙈. I have managed to convince him to have something else whenever possible but sometimes he just wants the plain spaghetti. Now that’s boring! He has been eating an awful lot of fruit though throughout the day so I guess that’s a good thing.

Xerochrysum · 12/01/2021 19:51

My ds is opposite. He takes exactly same packed lunch for school everyday, but at home, he wants something different everyday.

HappyThursdays · 12/01/2021 19:52

I also happily eat the same thing for lunch. (In non lockdown times!) I used to order the same things from places I like. It's not that I didn't like other things, I just knew what I liked and wasn't interested in having something different.

It's good they have varied dinners!

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 12/01/2021 19:52

Da has had the same breakfast since he was four and he's 19 now

He alternates between porridge topped with berries and a bit of honey and a poached egg sandwich on wholemeal bread. He's never deviated.

Lunch is either soup from something he's chucked in his soupmaker or cheese on toast.

TwoHundredThousandTimes · 12/01/2021 19:55

Dh has crazes also.

he used to eat chilli and rice every day for a while.

his current thing is melon for breakfast and greek salad for dinner. This phase has lasted about 3 years.

He is very very slim. I, alas, am not. I can't handle the same meal twice in a row.

TwoHundredThousandTimes · 12/01/2021 19:58

@MustardMitt

I thought that was normal! When I was a kid it was cream cheese sandwiches, now mine have ham sandwiches 🥪
Oh....... mmmmm..... when I was a child I adored cream cheese sandwiches with sliced green olives. On white bread.
Bitbusyattheminute · 12/01/2021 20:02

I have the same thing. I have roughly 20odd minutes for lunch. It's pretty joyless. The last thing I can be arse d with is thinking is what to eat. Dc make their own.

mrscee · 12/01/2021 20:12

I used to eat marmite sandwiches every day for lunch when I was at school. Didn't ever have a different filling until I was an adult. When I went to parties I used to have to take my marmite sandwiches with me as I wouldn't eat anything else.

DaphneBridgerton · 12/01/2021 20:19

Now that I think about it, my lunch has consisted of a turkey and salad sandwich, packet of hula hoops and a cup of tea for possibly 85% of lockdown.

ShaunaTheSheep · 12/01/2021 21:20

My DS has eaten a plain bagel toasted with smoked cheese and deli meat and a packet of crisps every day since Lockdown 1.0 started. Today, a mere 295 days later, boredom has struck so tomorrow he is moving onto smoked salmon on a sesame bagel and a handful of roasted peanuts. How long will that last?

ShaunaTheSheep · 12/01/2021 21:23

I worked with someone for years who had the same Tesco meal deal of a chicken salad sandwich, plain crisps and a Diet Coke every single day, and was not tempted to choose anything else that was in the deal. They’ve retired now and I do wonder if they walk to Tesco everyday to buy lunch.

underneaththeash · 12/01/2021 21:52

I was just thinking the same today!
DS1 has a cheese panini, cucumber, salad, fruit and packet of plain crisis
DS2 has pitta bread, hummus, sliced cheddar, cumber/tomatoes/olives and fruit. Occasionally plain hula hoops
DD has a bagel, mini pepperoni, cucumber, fruit and beef hula hoops.

NerdyBird · 12/01/2021 22:34

Dd loves her standard of cheese sandwich, tube yoghurt and baby cucumber. She often has either cherry toms, carrot, spinach or apple too. We're currently in an apple phase.

I've had marmite on toast then fruit for pretty much every lunch since lockdown started! Saves me thinking about what to have 🤷🏻‍♀️

MarmiteMushroom · 12/01/2021 23:09

Yep, marmite sandwiches every day

Howmanysleepsnow · 12/01/2021 23:34

God, I wish! Today ds7 would only accept sushi. Yesterday it was a cheese and jam sandwich (not a typo Envy). He’ll also request wraps or scrambled egg and smoked salmon or soup.
Ds8 varies between soup, scrambled egg on toast, chicken or ham sandwich.
Dd will have jacket potato with cheese/ beans or cheese and crackers/ stir fry.
Eldest ds will have omelette/ jacket potato and tuna/ toastie.
On any given day only 1 eats a sandwich/ soup/ jacket potato/ toastie/ eggs/ stir fry and I’m prepping 4 different meals with zero cross over.

thisislovelyme · 12/01/2021 23:44

I'm loving this thread, am feeling so relieved at my DSs apparent normality!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 16/01/2021 13:37

Well, in a case of "be careful what you wish for", a day or two after I posted this the obsession suddenly shifted and they've had tuna pasta for every lunch since. I went to Aldi yesterday to stock up all the necessities.

It could be a lot worse, I know!

A friend had a peanut butter sandwich everyday, throughout our primary school years.
