I'll start with cow hoof trimmer😄

I used to work in the job centre and there is a whole book of codes that describe a job, I think chicken sexer is 444!

Was a fascinating read on a lunch break. Clearly I needed a life back then. I love the idea of people needing a toothbrush making and someone designs the machinery (I watch way too much How It's Made on YouTube)

I also like weird catalogues, you know like where do churches get their altar cloths from or their chalices? Or medical supplies buying scalpels or drills and hammers needed in operating theatres.

Pole inspector.

Champagneforeveryone · 12/01/2021 13:18

@MojoJojo71

Horse sheath cleaner 🤢

Recently discovered this was a thing from one of my horsey friends

I came on to say exactly this. I was horrified and morbidly fascinated in equal measure when I found that one out
TroysMammy · 12/01/2021 13:20

I expect it's a voluntary role through something like Cats Protection but I'm sure there must be someone out there who is a kitten cuddler.

Howzaboutye · 12/01/2021 13:27

Kitten cuddler is the job for me!

salsmum · 12/01/2021 13:37

Lady Jane my Ds is trained in pyrotechnics but is also a stage manager and sound and light technician so his pyrotechnics is used with rock bands etc who do explosives n stuff like special effects on stage.

ShopTattsyrup · 12/01/2021 14:01

I imagine not a job anymore but I stumbled upon a British Pathe video on youtube from the 1950's about people who's job it was to wrap the tips of cigarettes in strips of rose petals so that the cork filters weren't as "harsh on the lips".

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/01/2021 14:12

Not as weird as some of these...but the Army has a whole department of bookkeepers, auditors, HR people etc. They are 'proper' soldiers, but spend most of their time doing that. A recent trade addition is running video conferencing...

What a brilliant job!
AudTheDeepAndCrispAndEven · 12/01/2021 14:23

@LadyJayne72 it's her dresser (Angela Kelly), who has the same size feet.

GhostPepperTears · 12/01/2021 14:45

Not quite as exciting but a friend of mine is a subtitler. He is freelance, gets sent videos of upcoming programs and films and writes/formats the subtitles for them.

He earns pretty good money and can do his job wherever and whenever he likes. Plus, it's proved to be corona-proof.

GhostPepperTears · 12/01/2021 14:46

Chicken Sexer

I also meant to mention this. Massive demand for it, apparently. There are not enough good chicken sexers to go around...

Ooh,that sounds like my ideal job! Envy I have no idea how one gets into that though.

Apparently it's incredibly specialist: people do it almost by instinct, rather than training.
GhostPepperTears · 12/01/2021 14:56

He applied for a job with a firm that did it for ITV. They trained him up and he then asked them if they'd mind/still put work his way if he went freelance. They agreed because it, ultimately, saved them money to do that - and so off he went.

That was a few years ago and I suppose he must have built up a good rep with the old firm, plus now takes on direct work for Sky (I think!).

They email the programs coming up and the deadlines. He just tells them which ones he'll do.

They pay per min of footage subtitled. So how much he earns depends on how quickly he can work, whilst still maintaining accuracy.

I must admit to being a bit jealous when he makes his own hours up and never has to deal with bosses or workplace politics.

TurquoiseDragon · 12/01/2021 15:08

I used to work in the MOD. The one job I really, really wanted has since disappeared, so I'll not get the chance ever. It had a boring, nondescript official title, but it was the job for investigating UFOs.

haba · 12/01/2021 15:16

Tha is @GhostPepperTears, it just sounds fab.

@TurquoiseDragon I was thinking a few weeks ago (after I saw a still from X Files) that people don't seem to report much UFO activity these days.

TurquoiseDragon · 12/01/2021 15:34

Apparently, there's some people thinking UFOs represented a form of fear, especially as the peak of reports seems to be the post war era and through the Cold War.

jollygreenpea · 12/01/2021 15:39

20TroysMammy

I sort of do that, I get given kittens usually when they have been rescued with their feral mum, to see if they will come round and be tame as most people want to adopt kittens. Some times I have them till they are big enough to be neutered as well.

I know about most of these jobs though.

Soubriquet · 12/01/2021 15:44

Panda cuddled!

I would so move to China just to become a panda cuddler

TroysMammy · 12/01/2021 17:20

Soubriquet can I come with you please? Sod the kittens Grin

I am wondering whether big cat sightings have replaced UFO sightings- as cats don't come with bright lights, it's harder for nay-sayers to debunk!

Yes! Let’s do it
