How do you keep your feet warm when sitting still?

How do you keep your feet and legs warm when sitting still for ages at a desk or table?

I work at a lovely old wooden desk (similar to the picture, but nicer Grin) so I really don't want to put a strong heater near it, as I worry the heat might damage it. I don't want a fan heater as the floor is currently bare concrete and I don't want to blow dust around.

I'm considering a small, oil-filled electric radiator, a heat pad on the floor to put my feet on it, or a heated boot thing.

Please help me choose. What are the pros and cons?

Slippers and a blanket

Randomrebel · 10/01/2021 21:54

Nice warm socks and I wear some shearling lined slippers to keep my toes warm. It also helps if I don’t sit for too long.

I suffer with really cold feet all the time but find if I have them near a very warm heat source e.g. heater I get terrible chilblains. Be careful making them too hot. I would go with wool socks, warm slippers with a decent sole.

Also keeping your circulation going is the best way as well as keeping your core warm. So move about regularly; lots of quick breaks, run up and down the stairs or something! And get some exercise into your day (if possible). Smile

I feel your pain, our house is very cold in the winter with tiles laid directly on a concrete floor in the kitchen. It's like standing on an ice rink at the moment!

Thick socks (I like glenmuir boot socks, usually bought from TK maxx) with sheepskin slippers and a rug. Also make sure my leggings are tucked into my socks so there's no draft. Stylish it is not, but it is warm.

I have a blanket for over my knees if necessary. The slippers are essential for warm feet, I bought them in October and I am so glad I did.

I recommend thermal socks and substantial slippers. I wouldn’t go for an oil filled radiator as it would dry my skin out.

Coldbatteredpuddings · 10/01/2021 22:23

2 pairs of socks and slippers. My feet are like blocks of ice when I'm at my desk working.

We hope to get a new carpet laid soon, but it could be delayed until spring. TBH though, I would get chilly working there last winter, when we did have carpet.

Uggs are great, and moving around does make a huge difference. But sometimes I get so engrossed and in the flow of what I'm doing that I'm freezing by the time I realise I ought to move around. I wear woolies and sometimes have a blanket on my lap, but it's my feet that get cold and then everything else follows.

Hot water bottle doesn't stay hot for long enough. Though I suppose getting up to reheat it would ensure I moved around.

Because of the old style of the desk, my legs would hit the middle drawer if I lifted my feet on a foot rest.

I also worry about forgetting that Ive got both feet in the footmuff and tripping!

Looks like an electric pad might be the way to go, with a piece of cardboard between it and the concrete. At least until we have the new carpet. And then it will be spring - hooray!

In my youth I worked on a stall at farmers markets in the summer holidays. Standing on cold concrete, outside for hours. However, standing on flattened cardboard boxes made a MASSIVE difference, it was so much warmer. Could you put some under your desk?

I would also recommend proper sheepskin slippers - I have the Celtic and Co ones, and though not cheap, they are excellent. Wear them without socks (a mumsnet tip), they regulate your body temperature, my feet are always a perfect toasty warm, not sweaty and definitely not cold. (And they don't smell at all surprisingly)

grassisjeweled · 10/01/2021 23:04

I wear socks with ugg slippers.

Anoisagusaris · 10/01/2021 23:06

Ugg or similar boots.

CatVsChristmasTree · 10/01/2021 23:07

DH bought me a heated foot warmer, because if my feet get too cold they go white. They were a lot worse before I was treated for underactive thyroid (found because we thought it was reynauds) but I still still use it if I've let them get too cold. My circulation is crap.

SingingSands · 10/01/2021 23:16

I have a desk like that in my bedroom, in a bay window and it gets really cold. I put a hot water bottle on the floor to tuck my feet under and have a fleece blanket over my knees, tucked in around me.

Gingaaarghpussy · 10/01/2021 23:21

Cardboard on the floor, thermal socks, slippers with a thick base, blanket folder on top of cardboard, blanket wrapped around feet, regular hot drinks and fingerless gloves.

Concestor · 10/01/2021 23:26

Our floor is heated, and I'm always warm, so I'd try and get some kind of heat mat.

oohmyback · 10/01/2021 23:26

Furry slippers

SmileyClare · 10/01/2021 23:45

Sounds like a good plan op, I didn't think of cardboard on the floor, good idea.

I worry about forgetting I've got both feet in the footmuff and tripping sorry but Grin

PickAChew · 10/01/2021 23:46

Thick trouers and woolly socks.

A heated lap blanket can work wonders, too. DH keeps a hot water bottle on his lap.

Butterymuffin · 11/01/2021 00:41

You definitely need something on the floor. As well as cardboard, a doormat or even just a square of carpet from a cutoff would help.

MustardMitt · 11/01/2021 01:02

Thick socks, slippers, and if really Baltic a hot water bottle.
