Would you prefer to be buried or cremated?

I have thought about this a lot and I really don't know what I want and the pros and cons of each option. I really want to make a decision and tell my husband and children so they know for whenever the time comes (hopefully in many, many years) rather than them not knowing and having to make that decision for me. So I've come on here to ask - which would you prefer and why?

I will be cremated and thrown into the sea at the Scottish Isles. I would like my ashes to drift on the waves.

PoptartPoptart · 08/01/2021 19:54

I want to be cremated.
Even if there is only a minuscule chance of me just being in a deep coma and not actually dead, I want it over and done with quickly. Maybe I’ve seen too many horror movies of people waking up in a coffin 6 feet under!

Burial. My mum was cremated and ashes scattered where she wanted. I visit occasionally but its “out of the way” And not somewhere easy to get to.

I feel with a gravestone i have a place to visit with flowers.

Aquamarine1029 · 08/01/2021 19:54

Cremated. Being buried is just creepy and absurd, never mind a waste of land.

zombielady · 08/01/2021 19:54

I'd like to be buried, and dug up and wondered about in hundreds of years.

Crapbuttrue · 08/01/2021 19:55

Buried. It's more eco friendly.

BettyBarton · 08/01/2021 19:56

Buried. I've already got a plot where many generations of my family, including my parents are buried. Me and my sister have bought a double decker. Whoever goes first gets the bottom bunk.

Nighthawker · 08/01/2021 19:57

I want to be cremated. I hate The thought of my body decaying and ending up rotten and yucky, I'd much rather end up as a pile of ashes even though I know logically I'll be dead and not have the ability to care either way.

TroysMammy · 08/01/2021 19:57

Cremated. Nothing worse seeing an overgrown grave with the epitaph "gone but not forgotten" .

ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 08/01/2021 19:58

Cremated. I hate the thought of being stuck in a box for all eternity...even though I doubt I will care either way because I will be dead.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 08/01/2021 19:58

Cremated.

I believe that us more eco friendly. Gone are the days of endless amounts of land being used for graveyards.

Plus being buried makes me feel cold & claustrophobic.

Userzzz · 08/01/2021 19:58

Definitely buried.

redfernsydney · 08/01/2021 19:58

I don't know.they both fill me with abject horror if I am honest. I suffer from a fear a being trapped, so don't like the idea of burial, then again cremation is like going into the fires of hell.

Lemonpiano · 08/01/2021 19:58

I want an open air cremation, rather than being incinerated like industrial waste.

I would just prefer for my body to go back into the elements that way than be slowly eaten. But I am not happy about the industrial and disrespectful way we cremate people in this country. Sad

Glenorma · 08/01/2021 19:59

Cremated. I don’t like the idea of swelling up with gases and exploding then rotting away and being eaten by worms. I’d rather be dust.

Deadringer · 08/01/2021 19:59

Cremated. I have already told my dc where i want my ashes scattered, it's a local beauty spot that has special significance for us as a family.

gottakeeponmovin · 08/01/2021 20:00

I sort of think we were supposed to decompose into compost - part of the circle of life. Also agree with the tombstone thing so for me it buried

cherrypie790 · 08/01/2021 20:00

I'd like a Viking type cremation - on a boat pushed out to sea, and set fire to. Something theatrical.

But I imagine it will be the local crematorium Grin The thought of being buried nearly sends me into a panic attack.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 08/01/2021 20:01

Buried. I dont like the idea that ive been burnt into non existence like waste. Burial is natural and simply returning to the earth.

Cissyandflora · 08/01/2021 20:02

Cremated with ashes scattered in John Lewis where I’ve spent a lot of my life.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 08/01/2021 20:02

Also- my parents were cremated and there was no grave for me to visit which really upset me. I had nowhere to go to "talk" to them.

firstimemamma · 08/01/2021 20:03

Cremated.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 08/01/2021 20:03

I love this!
Lemonpiano · 08/01/2021 20:03

Also, as side issues I think open air cremation is a more beautiful and natural way to mourn and say goodbye to someone you loved. It's a symbolic reminder the person you've lost will be with you wherever you go even though their physical presence has gone.

I also don't want to leave the burden of people feeling tied to a grave location, guilt of moving away or becoming too unwell to care for the grave, distress if it is damaged. No.

piglet81 · 08/01/2021 20:04

Buried, preferably in a wicker casket in a woodland burial site. I find the thought of cremation really unsettling.

Interesting how polarised people’s views on the subject are!
