Easy ‘french’ recipe for kids?

LeonoraFlorence · 08/01/2021 19:42

My DD has to bake or cook something typically ‘French’ for homework, with help from a grown up. I’m a good baker but not the greatest of cooks. Is there anything simple we could make together?
Will also have several smaller DDs and baby around so hoping for something straightforward!
Thanks for any ideas.

Could she not do a croque monsieur? Or just roll croissants?

MiddleClassProblem · 08/01/2021 19:45

How old is she and how much cooking is expected. If she’s primary I’d just do what I suggested or coq au vin or pain au chocolat etc

Cheese fondue?

EngineeringFix · 08/01/2021 19:48

I second Croque Monsieur.

MiddleClassProblem · 08/01/2021 19:48

@Peachered

Cheese fondue?
Swiss though innit. I’m assuming op doesn’t have a raclette set up but I’m not sure I would pass that as cooking for homework. Again depending on age.

Tartine?

From hazy memories it's a slice of baguette with jam on.

You could let her rub the butter in for the pastry/roll out, you could do the apple slicing and she arrange them? Lovely with ice cream 😁

Rolling pastry into a croissant or pain au choc sounds child friendly? And teaches a few words.

Bunnybigears · 08/01/2021 19:49

Definitely crepes

UnbeatenMum · 08/01/2021 19:49

There's a yoghurt cake recipe where all the other ingredients are measured with the empty yoghurt pot.

Crêpes with fruit and Nutella?

Croque monsieur or croque madame (just add an egg on top) or chocolate mousse:

Pancakes / crepe

SoddingWeddings · 08/01/2021 19:53

French Onion soup.

Chop onions
Dob of butter in a big pan
Mix in onions with melted butter
Soften onions without colouring thenlm
Add tsp brown sugar (white will do) to help caramelise them
Mix in several beef Oxo cubes
Add boiling water
Boil up

Serve with grated cheese on top

It's not a serious recipe, but it's how I make it in a hurry.

Oreservoir · 08/01/2021 19:54

Depending on her age choux pastry is really simple. People think its fancy but its only glorified batter.

poshme · 08/01/2021 19:57

French onion soup.

Mistigri · 08/01/2021 20:00

Well, my kids actually are French lol, and if you asked them to cook something French they would probably make one of:

Crepes
Raclette (melted cheese dish that you serve with potatoes and charcuterie, big student fave)
Croque monsieur

elephantoverthehill · 08/01/2021 20:02

Madelines? Or my French exchange student's recipe; hollow out a baguette and stuff a bar of chocolate inside.

BikeRunSki · 08/01/2021 20:03

Tartiflette leave out the wine use Brie if you can’t get reblochon. This won’t be so authentic, but still delicious.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 08/01/2021 20:05

Vinaigrette? Not technically cooking, just mixing, but very French
Omelette - can’t get easier than that. Omelette au fromage if you’re feeling fancy!

Silkiechickscat · 08/01/2021 20:08

Tarte Tatin is nice, takes a bit longer.

@Mistigri can you tell me if tartine is a thing?! From what I remember it was something a kid might have as an after school snack or something!

Gâteau au yaourt - Yoghurt cake! From French kids dont throw food. It’s amazing and so easy.
My 4yo could pretty much do this on his own with a bit of supervision we have made it so often

Yogurt cake
2 tubs whole yoghurt (individual tubs 175g ones)
2 eggs
2 tubs sugar (using yogurt pot to measure - can use 1 tub if you don’t like it sweet)
1 tsp vanilla essence
Just under 1 tub of vegetable oil
4 tubs plain flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder

Preheat oven to 190 degrees C
Grease baking tin I use a loaf tin can also use 9 inch round tin
Mix all wet ingredients together
Mix flour and baking powder separately
Mix dry to wet ingredients and gently combine (dont over do it!)
Can add chocolate chips etc at this stage - whatever you have

Bake for 35 mins and then 5 mins more until it is relatively clean on a knife test.
