Easy ‘french’ recipe for kids?

LeonoraFlorence · 08/01/2021 19:42

My DD has to bake or cook something typically ‘French’ for homework, with help from a grown up. I’m a good baker but not the greatest of cooks. Is there anything simple we could make together?
Will also have several smaller DDs and baby around so hoping for something straightforward!
Thanks for any ideas.

Isn't yoghurt cake more of an American thing? There isn't really a tradition in France of baking sponge cakes like in the U.K. (French cakes and pastries tend to err on the complicated side) - so mug cakes and all-in-one yoghurt cakes have been a big hit here. But they are not at all French IMO!

You've probably found something from the many good ideas here but seconding clafoutis - so very easy for something so delicious/classic/impressive

Interesting @tinselandlightsinsel I would love to see a picture! Kid school canteen meals are much more adventurous here in France, my four year old is regularly given things like beef and olives, buckwheat and lentil burgers, and veg like beetroot and fennel.

You get yoghurt cake recipes printed on flour and caster sugar packets, I think it’s pretty French.

What about Cauliflower Cheese, or in French, Gratin au Chou-Fleur? Gratin dishes are a popular feature in French home cooking, so quite authentic, and making a white sauce is a simple cookery lesson for a child.

From a French lesson point of view, there are only a small number of ingredients to list in French, and the name of the dish could provide a fun discussion too!

(Surely French Toast is French when it's called Pain Perdu?)

Gateau au yaourt has been a normal French thing since at least the 1960s when I learnt to make it with my mamie!

Thanks everyone! I’ve written all of these down and she can do those that take her fancy next week.

Clafoutis. Use apples, pears, plums etc. Once they're prepped there's nothing to it.

@notafanoftheman I'll take pics of some of the recipes later, some of them are impressive!

@tinselandlights thanks, I've found the Disney cooking book on amazon.fr. Looks great and something my kids can do with their childminder on Wednesday afternoons.

Pommes aligot? Basically really smooth cheesy mash.

notafanoftheman · 10/01/2021 09:01

I'd love that @tinselandlights, thanks!

Clafoutis quite easy, maybe use tinned cherries?

We did pains au chocolat the other day, which were very easy to do. Just whatever chocolate you have, rolled up in puff pastry sheets then brushed with egg glaze & baked in the oven.
