Do you have karndean?

We are considering karndean flooring. It's either that or engineered wood.

We've had a quote through and just waiting for a second one. Would you recommend your karndean? Anything I need to know?

Thanks

My karndean is scratched to buggery after 3 years. Still looks OK, it's just easy to scratch

We love ours, it does scratch slightly but it’s not really noticeable and a lot of them will clean off. Our local store made sure we ordered enough to have a few spare planks because if you damage one they can lift it right out and replace it quite easily apparently (never had to do it!). Also if you need to use a doormat on it, use a Turtle Mat as it has a latex backing. Others can mark the floor.

We've got it all over, very large house, very large family. It's tough and it is in all of the 'high traffic' areas as well as the sitting rooms and bedrooms. We had the decorative lines and the nice finish to the corners in the rooms. We had the Church Oak, as it fits with the style and period of our house.
You can buy care kits, but we've had ours down 8 yrs and it still looks immaculate. It's had football studs, toys, dogs on it and it's not marked or scratched at all.
The only thing we've found is not to steam clean it, or use bleach. Apart from that it's really easy to clean. For larger areas a nice rug breaks it up colourwise or if you like soft rugs underfoot in Winter.
It's well worth the money, and if you have some of the designs it can look very modern and stylish but also very practical.

Yes. I got karndean because I'm in a 1st floor apartment and can't have wood due to the lease.

  1. Get samples and look how the light falls on it, some textures look better than others when the light catches then.
  2. The prep part is expensive, levelling the floor with either Ply or screed (sp?) make sure you get a proper fitter specialising in LVT. And check it'll meet existing skirting boards. Mine was finished badly and I had to get them back in.
  3. Mine looks great and better than laminate and I get a lot of comments on it but it's not wood still. Ie no gaps between floorboards etc. IMO the herringbone layout looks more realistic.
  4. Mine is bombproof and I drop knives, spilled paint etc all good.
  5. I think amtico needs sealing where karndean doesn't.
  6. Check other brands such as camro polyfloor. My friend had that and I prefer it to my karndean tbh.

Yes we love it. We've also had engineered wood at our old house. Not a lot of price difference to be ho eat if you go for the top end karndean. I find the karndean gets less damage.

We've got it in the kitchen. It's ok, but nothing special. We bought a similar thing by Quickstep for some other rooms and laid it ourselves. I think it is at least as good and was a lot cheaper. We've got engineered wood in the living room which we also laid ourselves and I like that best of all but it shows dirt really easily.

We have it. Not Karndean but a different make. We built an extension and have through the kitchen and large living/dining space. It's great! Easy to clean, it has some texture to it and we really like it. I do steam clean it on occasion as the texture is quite deep, if you see what I mean, and find it gets in all the grooves well, but I wouldn't steam it every week! We have a good spray mop for everyday.

inappropriateraspberry · 09/01/2021 15:46

Oh, and ours is classed as a commercial grade, so takes the battering from 2 cats and a 2 and 5 year old!

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 09/01/2021 15:57

I've had both. I love the look and feel of engineered wood but it wasn't as hard wearing as Karndean we have now in another house. It dented and scratched pretty easily. We once had a huge party (those were the days) and were left with marks on the floor from stiletto heels. In the end I just accepted that they were all part of the character of the floor. Not had a party with stiletto wearing friends on the Karndean so can't comment. I think it also depends on the type of house you're in. If you have an older property then the wood might work best. Also, they were comparable cost wise, both expensive 😁
