So today I really fancied an egg mayo sandwich and We all know what that is traditionally supposed to look like, so imagine my surprise when i went to the cafe by work and asked for one

What i got was a thin layer of mayo followed by a layer of egg and another layer of mayo, in my surprise at seeing this made in front of my eyes I didn't think quick enough to stop them and I was left with something that i didn't actually ask for

It was very dry 🙄

I've got 2

Qyite a few years ago our works Christmas party (Oh those were the days...) was moved from the marquee at a local hotel to the hospitality suite at the football stadium (was a premiership team at the time). The vegetarian option was vegetable couscous, wrapped in pastry with a side of couscous... It was the driest thing I've ever tried to eat 😩

And the other was the celebratory dinner after a 4 day London to Paris cycle tour, big name hotel in centre of Paris. The vegetarian option was golden vegetable rice.,. That's it, no protein at all. I even asked if there was any fish left (I do eat fish) but was told someone else on my table had got the last portion. We weren't even the last table to be served 😩😩

ShipshapeShore · 08/01/2021 16:05

@Oreservoir was it The Antelope? We've been there and they hadn't got any rice or ketchup, and there was something wrong with 7 out of 8 meals when they came. They agreed with us it was piss poor and gave us 50% off!

AriesTheRam · 08/01/2021 16:11

Jerk chicken in a so called traditional Jamaican restaurant. It was like Yorkshire puddings with seasoned chicken in some kind of sauce. Not what I was expecting at all tbh.

Scarby9 · 08/01/2021 16:15

My mum asked for the pasta bake at a local Stately Home once. A new tray had just been put out - covered in golden bubbling cheese.
She ate about a third before realising there was no pasta in it - just tuna in tomato sauce with cheese on top. The whole tray was like that.

We later saw the serving person digging experimental spoonfuls out of the other two trays in the oven.

LoseLooseLucy · 08/01/2021 16:24

Roast beef dinner in Tenerife... all lovely aside from the Yorkshire puddings, which were like little cakes.

Being vegetarian I've had loads. Some very much like pp.
Dh and I booked a package holiday, I was very clear about being vegetarian but neither flight had a meal for me. The outward journey wasn't too bad but on the return flight I was so hungry that I cried. Dh and I had run out of money and the flight was delayed by hours.

Pil took the dc one Sunday so dh and I could treat ourselves to a Sunday roast. My vegetarian one came with a rich beef gravy. By the time my new meal was brought out dh had finished.

One work Christmas party at a country club my main was a pineapple risotto served in a pineapples.
Another work Christmas party the tomato soup looked and tasted like a tin of watered down tomatoes with baby tomatoes floating in it and the main was a risotto with dried parmesan over the top, it looked and smelt like a plate of vomit. Funnily enough, I don't remember the dessert as I was shitfaced.

I've also had vegetarian alternatives cooked in the same fat as meat or fish.

My parents had been raving about a pub that did food near them so we all went. We ordered steak / chicken tikka baguettes & chips type meals, nothing fancy. It took well over an hour to arrive and when it did it some were cold in parts, others burned. They'd got toppings & requests to leave ingredients out wrong. We'd already paid & didn't want to wait more than another hour to be served. We complained but the manager wouldn't refund or knock any money off the bill.

I also asked where I could change DS and they had no facilities despite saying they were family friendly. I had to change him on my coat on the concrete floor of the ladies toilets.

It closed not long afterwards.

DH once ordered an egg mayo sandwich when we were on holiday in Turkey, he got a cold fried egg in a roll with a bit of salad & mayo on the top of it!! He loves eggs in all forms but even he couldn't manage the cold runny yolk mixed with lettuce & mayo Shock

FlightyBird · 08/01/2021 17:47

A posh restaurant in London. Been to the chef’s previous place and seen him on master chef so thought it would a great experience. Decided to try ‘signature dish’ of wagyu lobster - basically lobster in beef dripping. It was as bad as it sounds! Thought I would throw up and could still taste beef fat the next day. It was horrid.

Service was rubbish as well. I asked for the bill, they gave it to DH. I handed over my card, they gave the machine to DH. When he said that I was paying, the woman made a comment about it all coming out the same account anyway! Hmm

TigerDrawers · 08/01/2021 17:56

Not me but my veggie friends on a flight. Outbound her veggie meal was also a vegan meal and consisted of a submarine roll with roasted peppers in it. No sort of butter or marg equivalent.

Return flight we'd been swapped on to a different flight so their veggie meals weren't available. The meal was a choice of either a pepperoni or margherita pizza. The cabin crew wouldn't let them have a margherita pizza unless there was any left when they got to them (there wasn't!) I felt so guilty tucking in to my pepperoni!

Same friend, visiting a small town restaurant in USA had asked about veggie options and was basically told she could have a salad and that was it. When the salad came out it was covered in bacon bits!

@cricketmum84

Mac and cheese in a pub with very few decent veggie options. Was expecting a lovely gooey cheesy dish. What I actually got was the Heinz tinned crap microwaved with no cheese on top.
This reminds me of a mac n cheese I had at one of our local pubs a couple of years ago. Heinz tinned shit, with some breadcrumbs chucked in that vague direction and two cremated pieces of ciabatta cut at a jaunty angle to look "snazzy". I never ordered that again, but have had other things at that pub which were great.

This will out me (if anyone reads reviews on Google maps!) but my worst meal out was at the posh celeb chef restaurant in Milton Keynes, I forget what it’s called.

It was Sunday and we wanted the set Sunday lunch. Our booking was at 1, when they opened.

The veg was yellow broccoli and bendy carrots Hmm. The meat (large group so all choices covered) was overcooked, while the roast potatoes were undercooked and hard.

We made a complaint and the lovely waitress comped is most of the food, but it was so disappointing. I couldn’t believe it when we asked if they didn’t have any fresher veg and they literally said no they didn’t!

We joke that my mum brings out the worst in chefs as every time we go for a meal something is wrong. Highlights include when her chicken wings were raw at the tips where they’d clearly been held in a deep fat fryer!

catsareme14 · 08/01/2021 18:30

Went to an Indian restaurant. Two mouthfuls in I felt sick & dizzy . Went to the loo where other customers looked after me . Staff ignored me completely even though it was obvious I was ill . It was decided I should go to hospital . I wasn't allowed to leave until I'd paid for my meal . Haven't been back

Went on a coach trip through France (I know) when i used to be a veggie. The lunch/dinner was a buffet type affair shared with the whole table of other coach trippers. Generally it was a meat or fish with various sides of veggies.

None of the places really knew how to cater for veggies so just said they had put on more vegetables and bread than they usually would. Happy with that.

For some reason i'd always end up at the opposite end of the table where the food was served from. This meant the whole table then served themselves giant portions of veggies leaving me
with teeny servings. One memorable night I was left with three mange touts and two potatoes for dinner while the rest of the table tucked into heaving plates of salmon, boeuf bourginon and delicious veggies.

Not one of those fuckers ever noticed or ever remembered. I got my own back by finishing eating quickly and drinking all the wine...Grin

AndIquote · 09/01/2021 04:37

Yes, on holiday went to a prissy seaside cafe and thought I'd treat myself to a crab baguette thinking it would be the best ever tasty fresh crab.
When it came out it was bland, dry, grey and brown mush between big doorstoppers - I've tasted better tinned crab.
Worse £11 ever spent and spent the duration lumping it down whilst eyeing my DPs cheese panini that cost a fraction.

sallywinter · 09/01/2021 05:13

This is an example of a woman who had obviously disappointed many in her time and was keen to be clear from now on:

Greece, 2011: ordered a “banana pancake” from a little ice cream place. She went to great pains to explain to me that it was NOT a banana pancake as I know it “I get a banana and I WRAP (wrapping motion) it IN the pancake (shoving motion)”

I actually can’t remember whether I ordered it in the end but that has been shorthand for when someone doesn’t really want your business ever since.

custardbear · 09/01/2021 05:29

We went to a chain restaurant, bit like Nando's, can't recall which one now, and we had salad with what looked like a dead slug, and they were putting tesco value frozen chips in their fryer - real disappointment

Animum2 · 09/01/2021 14:54

@movingonup20

This is in Beckenham, Kent, aside from the disappointing sandwich they actually do really nice meals but I know i won't order that again!

I searched sally lines as I hadnt heard of it. I found this extremely confusing!

I love spicy food and I'm always disappointed when something is too vanilla for me!

Deli Kate-supposely fab for alternative diets, not ONE vegan toastie option!

Went to a chain restaurant against my better judgement and ordered vegetable fajitas
One of my all time favourite meals.
The vegetables consisted of a few minuscule slices of green pepper, a sparse slice of something else green, and about ten tonne of overly crunchy fried onions. I complained and got a voucher to go again.
I didn't.

Dogissue · 09/01/2021 15:25

Sally LUNNS

Theimpossiblegirl · 09/01/2021 15:50

@Dogissue
It's a traditional tea room in Bath, steeped in History but lacking in flavour. Instead of a scone you get a Sally Lunn's teacake. Mil had wanted to go for years so I treated her. We stopped off on the way home for a take away cream tea from Cheddar to make up for our disappointment.

Hollybutnoivy · 09/01/2021 15:52

Yes, I have been disappointed by Sally Lunn's too. I think it had its heyday in 1700 and something and has been going downhill ever since.

Sideorderofchips · 09/01/2021 15:54

A few

Bella italia with mushrooms thst bounced if you dropped them

Work canteen when they cater for inset day and it was always chilli and garlic bread... But it was sliced bread with garlic butter. Not toasted. Grim

Chinese takeaway that was freezing cold

cricketmum84 · 09/01/2021 15:56

@Sideorderofchips the sliced white bread with garlic butter!!! Yep! We went on holiday to bulgaria before all this crap and ordered garlic bread in a restaurant and that's what they brought out to us 😂 was like I'm sorry wtf is this!!
