Have you ever been so disappointed in a food order before

So today I really fancied an egg mayo sandwich and We all know what that is traditionally supposed to look like, so imagine my surprise when i went to the cafe by work and asked for one

What i got was a thin layer of mayo followed by a layer of egg and another layer of mayo, in my surprise at seeing this made in front of my eyes I didn't think quick enough to stop them and I was left with something that i didn't actually ask for

It was very dry 🙄

Profiteroles.

Normally I love them but these came HOT with the cream leaking out of them in a nasty yellow puddle. Smelled revolting.

Sent it back and could see the staff standing around the bowl in a very puzzled way. Pretty sure the profiteroles had been frozen and the microwaved.

Ordered an egg Mayo at a cafe in Devon. Thinnest bread, didn’t taste of anything much. Opened it up to see that they’d spread a thin cross of egg mixture across the bits they cut into, so it looked like filling. Rest of the triangle was empty. Didn’t pay, cheeky sods.

I’ve just remembered when me and DH were on our honeymoon in Paris and we decided to treat ourselves to a load of patisserie and take them back to our hotel for a good feast. We selected about 9 divine-looking miniature cakes and pastries - glossy chocolate, perfect looking cream, some macaroons, all wrapped and boxed beautifully.

They were so tasteless it was bizarre - the textures were nice but they had no real flavour to any of them at all. We were so disappointed as they looked totally amazing

I'm not a vegetarian because I was raised farming and meat has always played a big part of my diet but I would be absolutely raging if I was vegetarian and there was meat in my "vegetarian" dish.
It's not difficult and not something that I believe you can do accidentally. It MUST be done on purpose because no chef anywhere doesn't know that bacon is meat. Same goes for ham. Or chicken, or cooking in beef fat.

Now I can see there being an issue with fish as I did have quite a few customers over my years of working in restaurants who claimed to be vegetarian but then ordered fish dishes. Of course they were pescatarian but still said the word vegetarian for some reason.

But actual meat, particularly bacon etc is bloody obvious!

Went to a local Prezzo once - don't like chains as a rule, but this one was in a gorgeous converted building and had a great ambiance. Had a veggie main course, and after a few mouthfuls, thought it tasted "meaty" so I questioned with the server that it was vegetarian. She looked, went back to the chef and came back "yes of course". I then ate a couple more mouthfuls and found the finely chopped ham among the mushrooms .......... I was so upset after not eating meat for nearly 20 years.

You would expect a jacket potato to come with beans and or cheese, or tuna mayo or whatever other people put on theirs - I only gave cheese and beans.

And you might expect a bit of salad on the plate too.

Sorry of course. Although I would think of tuna/cheese/beans etc as a filling and salad as a side. It explains my confusion but now makes me sound like a pedantic arse Sorry.

Someone bought in homemade brownies to work, the looked delicious but as I was eating one something very chewy was in my mouth...it was bacon! Yes brownies with bacon in to add flavour 🤢 I was horrified and quickly warned all the veges!!

I used to work at the Natural History Museum, working sleepover events. Your shift would be 6pm to 10am so dinners would be provided.

Normally we'd buy stuff from Pret and get refunded. It isn't exactly amazing to have to work a 14 hour shift on just a cold sandwich in the first place, then they stopped us buying our own food to save money and made the in-house catering team stay late to make our food.

The vegetarian option was just a dish of plain boiled carrots.

A chicken Caesar salad when we’re on holiday in Greece, was shocked when it arrived and the chicken in it was actually chicken nuggets 😂

Recently went to Taco Bell twice both times large amounts of food/drink were were missing from the order. They put it all in a huge bag so it was very difficult to check. It also felt very unsafe under the current circumstances there were so many people waiting for orders and no one regulating how many were waiting in store. Definitely not going back. We ordered crunchy taco with only lettuce and cheese, they had literally put a pinch on cheese in you had to search for it. The caramel sauce with the churros was like someone had smeared it in the pot there was hardly anything there.

Tim Hortons drive through, again missing items, ordered a couple of breakfast meals they missed off one completely apart from the drink the others had bits missing too. I think I’ll give up now. Huge queue to go back round, so left disappointed.

I was in hospital having just had DS1. C section and still wired up so couldn't leave the bed. Dinner trolley came round and I was asked "pasta or baked potato". Went for baked potato, didn't care what sides (it had been a long labour, I was starving and the post labour toast hadn't even touched the sides of my mouth). She plated up and went off-it was only then I looked (having been too engrossed looking at cute little newborn DS1 before that).

Yep. I got a baked potato. Dry baked potato with no sides. There wasn't even a little sachet of butter.

And to my annoyance now I was too embarrassed to make a fuss.

I'm curious and wondering what sides you thought you might be rejecting? Do hospitals do sides?

(I'm fortunate not to have needed a hospital meal since 1978 )

@DoubleHelix79 yes I ordered four cheese pasta off a veggie menu once and it had ham in it! I’m not veggie so I ate it but I did point it out to them. They didn’t seem fussed.

@petridishmystery To be fair I've not had anything like that happen to me for a long time. We've lived in London until recently, where veggies are pretty well catered for these days, but I grew up in Germany. Back in the 80s and 90s being vegetarian was really unusual - I once had someone's grandad ask me what terrible medical condition I had that meant I couldn't eat meat. Couldn't comprehend that someone may choose to give it up willingly.

Other memorable in that time include spaghetti (partly overcooked, partly undercooked) with canned tomatoes poured over them (again no seasoning whatsoever), and a dish that I was assured was meat free - aside from being mostly chicken. Chicken isn't meat apparently. Fun times. Much easier now to get decent vegetarian food, but you still have to watch out for 'just a little bit of bacon' being added to your soup.

I was very nice about it and made it clear that I appreciated anything they could rustle up for me. I got a bowl full of overcooked, completely unseasoned vegetables. They clearly didn't think vegetarians cared about things like taste or texture.

It just baffles me! So many restaurants are perfectly capable of making delicious side dishes with only veg, why does it suddenly go wrong when they need to make a main dish?

On a work trip to France. The mayor of the town was very proud of the local catering college, as we sat in their training restaurant he told about the students and how they were the future of the hospitality industry.

We eyed the starched linen and the smart (student) waiting staff, admiring the silver platters being presented. I had ordered a vegetarian option in advance and was impressed that this had been noted.

After we were all served, at a slight nod from the mayor, the silver domes were whipped off. All around were steaks with garlic butter, whipped potato and steamed veg. In front of me were two barely cooked fried eggs and three slices of baked apple.

Everyone on my table quietly passed over their bread rolls.

Yes, I have been disappointed by Sally Lunn's too. I think it had its heyday in 1700 and something and has been going downhill ever since.
