If you're vegetarian are you bothered by any of these?

I don't eat meat but I do eat animal in other things so I don't count myself as vegetarian. If I can easily avoid meat I do, I would pick the veggie Percy Pigs if they were right beside the gelatine ones, but if someone offered me a Percy Pig I would just eat it without bothering to check. That tiny amount of gelatine would not bother me at all.

DS14 is vegetarian and the opposite extreme.

If you consider yourself to be vegetarian do you eat-

Non-vegetarian marshmallows and sweets containing gelatine

Chips from the chip shop cooked in beef fat

Deep fried food eg mozzarella sticks that are fried in the same vegetable oil as meat products like chicken nuggets

A veggie pie cooked on the same tray as a meat pie

A veggie pie that has been cooked in the oven underneath a meat pie on a metal baking tray

A veggie pie that has been anywhere in the same oven as a meat pie

A veggie pie that has been carried home in the same shopping bag as a meat pie (each pie cold and wrapped in a separate paper bag)

I've had mixed responses from people irl. One lifelong vegetarian said he doesn't care if a chip shop cooks its chips in beef fat or not because any animal dna has been fried into oblivion. I was really surprised by that.

Another who used to have a massive bag of haribo in her drawer at work, she figured the animals were dead anyway so she might as well save their gelatine from going to waste.

DS will absolutely not eat anything with any animal by-product in and ties himself in knots trying to avoid any meat being anywhere near his veg. Eating out is difficult because he can't be sure his vegetarian food hasn't been cooked right beside meat.

To my mind a small splash of animal fat on my food is not going to matter but I guess to him it really matters. I'm curious about where other people are on the spectrum.

This is not about me trying to persuade him to think differently, I'm just genuinely curious. I do also think he gives himself a whole lot more stress than he needs to but maybe not. I respect his choices (mostly, I think the chances of meat juice dripping through a solid metal tray onto his food are pretty low and don't have much patience with that one)

@NotThatKindOfDoctor

I'm a pretty flexible vegie. I don't eat meat at home, and when I go to a restaurant (ha) I wouldn't order meat.

However, if I go to someone's house and they cook something meat free for me, I don't question how it was cooked/with what utensils, and if for some reason they didn't cook me something vegetarian, I would just eat what was put in front of me.

I would definitely eat chips from the chip shop no matter what they were cooked in (mainly because I live in France now and DREAM about a British chippie dinner).

If I eat sweets I tend to go for vegan ones mainly because I prefer them, but if they weren't available and I really fancied something, I would eat whatever was on offer.

I sound like a pretty crap vegetarian 😂

Not a crap vegetarian. Just not a vegetarian.

Well I Let's imagine I eat dogs. I invite you round and cook your food on a tray with my Labrador steaks. Truthfully are you going to eat it? Dead dog. Nummies. Vegetarians can't win can we. If we are strict we're militant and if we're not we're hypocrites.
It wouldn’t bother me, personally. I’ve knowingly eaten dog. Wasn’t especially delicious, probably wouldn’t have it again. It’s a bit of a pointless example because, like vegetarianism, it’s a moral issue with range of viewpoints.

I don’t see it as hypocritical. It’s a bit like telling a white lie: sometimes we all swallow our own moral belief that lying is wrong, to tell a small lie which might preserve a friendship and not hurt somebody’s feelings. I think if you would make a massive fuss and make a good friend feel terrible and others at the dinner party awkward because your vegetarian pie had been placed on the same baking tray as a meat pie, then you would have to accept that you were making a choice between being vehemently vegetarian and having friends, and own that choice. Just as if you decided not to breech your moral view that lying is wrong and told your friend that yes, actually she does look fat in that dress because she’s fat.

I describe myself as vegetarian because I don't eat meat and it's an easy way to ensure people don't serve meat for me but I don't check ingredients on things and I wouldn't be too bothered about what fat people use for cooking for example. I buy ethically-sourced meat locally for DH and the children and cook stuff together quite happily. I am not ethically or morally opposed to eating meat, I just don't eat it.

I'm a vegetarian. I would prefer my vegetarian pie not cooked on the same baking tray as a meat pie. I would respect your preference, too But it is not an ethical position, just a preference.

And fwiw I wouldn't fancy labrador steak juice on my roast cauliflower but I don't find the idea of labrador steak any more horrible than chicken breast.

Non-vegetarian marshmallows and sweets containing gelatine
I'd avoid
Chips from the chip shop cooked in beef fat
I'd avoid
Deep fried food eg mozzarella sticks that are fried in the same vegetable oil as meat products like chicken nuggets
Probably ok with this
A veggie pie cooked on the same tray as a meat pie
Wouldn't bother me
A veggie pie that has been cooked in the oven underneath a meat pie on a metal baking tray
Wouldn't bother me
A veggie pie that has been anywhere in the same oven as a meat pie
Wouldn't bother me
A veggie pie that has been carried home in the same shopping bag as a meat pie (each pie cold and wrapped in a separate paper bag)
Wouldn't bother me

I really hate the taste of meat, and I'd rather avoid eating animals, some of those ate a bit full on, but I guess we draw our own lines.

"Even PETA say that veggies/vegans shouldn't worry about cross contact because it's all about reducing demand for animal products and meat rather than being perfect and pure."

You do know that a lot of vegetarians and vegans disagree with PETA's ethics??

You cannot call yourself a vegetarian and eat wafer thin ham or not be bothered about having your veggie burger grilled in the same area - it really is hypocritical.

Re the grill, yes you can, and no it is not, just a preference. Not an ethical position.

TheBuffster · 06/01/2021 18:49

I would hope my friends weren't such massive bellends they'd say they'd cater for me and then not. It's lazy and inconsiderate on their part. You wouldn't cook a Muslim's roast dinner in pig fat would you.
Thankfully my friends are very thoughtful. I also always offer to bring my own food if they'd like me to. I usually bring a side dish just to be nice anyway. I'm not compromising my Morales to be nice shheesh. Friends like that are not worth having.

I don't eat food that has been cooked in the same oil as meat.

I would eat a pie that has been Carried in the same bag and cooked in the same oven, but not under the meat pie.

I don't use the same utensils when I'm cooking for veggie and meat.

Lostmyunicorn · 06/01/2021 18:53

My very strict veggie DC will not eat any gelatine, checks the packets of everything, wouldn’t eat chips cooked in beef fat, but would tolerate veggie sausages being in the same tray as meat as long as they weren’t touching, wouldn’t occur to think about whether same utensils / oven etc were used, that wouldn’t be an issue.

Juanbablo · 06/01/2021 18:54

I also don't eat sweets containing gelatine and check the packet first.

WhenPidgeonsCry · 06/01/2021 18:54

Meat pies must really drip a lot to overflow a baking tray

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 06/01/2021 18:55

@Wearywithteens - yes!, sorry to be clear I meant that the baking tray thing is just a preference. Of course vegetarianism can be a thought out ethical position, for religious reasons or not.

Why are PETA the devil? Too hardline, or not hardline enough or what?

'People should be thinking about MY needs above all else.'

Well yes that's the selfish reasoning of a monster.

Life long veggie as are my adult children.

None of us eat food containing animal products, cooked in animal products or which shares oil with animal products (the taste is contaminated apart from anything else).

I wouldn't put meat and veg pies/other stuff with juices on the same tray because if they leak you get cross contamination of foods (and flavours if the meat aspect doesn't bother you).

I wouldn't waste heat by running the oven twice, or have redundant kit rather than simply wash them between uses.

I eat out and takeaways but I know how the food is cooked in those places.

TheBuffster · 06/01/2021 19:05

Peta where do I begin...
I'll go first. For starters they objectify women in massively misogynistic advertising campaigns. Which is bizarre as vegetarians are at present much more likely to be female.
They run campaigns with hypocritical celebs. I'd rather go naked than wear fur for example. Then the celebs are seen soon after wearing fur. They've done this several times so shows they pick ambassadors they know don't practice what they preach.
They put down healthy cats and dogs as routine when they find strays.
Anyone want to take it from here?

goldielockdown2 · 06/01/2021 19:07

I'm vegetarian so I eat none of the things you mentioned in your OP.
