Has anyone been happy with the home schooling provision provided today?

Just that really. I have been very impressed with the provision - I think that the teachers must have spent a lot of time over Christmas preparing for this. Yesterday was a planned INSET anyway but at 9am today my daughter had a recorded English, maths and geography lesson ready and a live assembly on Teams. All the lessons were interactive and the teacher was available via messaging. She struggles a bit with maths and the teacher has scheduled a breakout with her tomorrow.

They have offered to provide laptops and internet if households are struggling with having to share devices or internet service.

I am so impressed with her far they have come since the last lock down and just wondered how other schools are doing?

Very impressed.

Secondary has live lessons as per usual timetable. Day 3 and DS has loved every lesson and carried on doing things inspired by them after the school day.

Primary child has two live lessons and two recorded lessons a day (which she can do any time) plus two short 'class meets'. DD finds the maths and English lessons a bit slow and drawn out but that's no different from at school! It's tough to differentiate.

There is a list of other optional activities provided as well, but she reads, writes and draws in her spare time anyway, so we haven't looked at those yet.

Excellent provision here. Mine were all off loads SI with year group closures in the autumn term, so I knew their provision would be just like that. Very impressed.

Springersrock · 06/01/2021 10:07

Yes and no.

DD is year 11 and she said that on the whole yesterday was great

She has a pupil passport due to some SN and 2 teachers have been a right pain in the arse about it for the last year. The same 2 teachers were a nightmare on Teams yesterday as well, but at least DD doesn’t have to deal with them face to face anymore

Yes, my kids’ secondary school has been excellent. Full timetable of lessons on Teams.

starrynight19 · 06/01/2021 10:13

Yes really happy mine have both a mixture of live lessons and work set and they are expected to log into each lesson to attendance is monitored.

carcarbinks · 06/01/2021 10:14

My DC are at state secondary and have been having a full timetable of lessons. All good so far. They have to have cameras on this time round which I'm happy about but DS isn't because he can't be on his phone during the lessons!

steppemum · 06/01/2021 10:18

I have 3 in secondary, so they knew before Christmas that at least some of them would be online this week anyway.

10am Monday morning, online lessons started. Every lesson live streamed on Teams, 30 mins teaching followed by 15 minutes activity to complete to give them a screen break. Included pe yesterday!

We get a phone call if they are not there in the meeting.

It is awesome, and I am so impressed. BUT during last lockdown we bought a laptop each for the kids, not new, my dh buys old or damaged ones and adds harddrives, replaces mouses etc.

We could not have 3 kids live online and dh and I both WFH if we didn't have a laptop each. On top of that, we have good wifi, but even so, yesterday dh was moving the router etc to get a better signal for dd1. I know some of their friends in villages just don't have the connectivity.

iVampire · 06/01/2021 10:19

Yes

DD has a full time table with a mix of online lessons and work set/teacher available, plus they have to log in for class registration

She’s a sixth former, and I think expectations of ability to study independently are greater. And parents are advised to check in with what their DC are doing, but are not expected to supervise

CigarsofthePharoahs · 06/01/2021 11:01

I'm very please.
After lockdown 1 the school put a lot of effort into setting up Microsoft Teams for anyone who needed to self isolate.
All the assignments are there, school are happy for the work to be done on the computer directly or written down and email a picture of it.
They get an hour long teams meeting with their class group every day. That's helped deal with a few technology teething issues.
So far so good. The main difficulty I've had is keeping my 10 year old focussed. He's a real butterfly brain.

BigBadVoodooHat · 06/01/2021 12:44

KS2: I accidentally discovered we had three MyMaths activities set (this was for the full week: took about an hour to complete) when I logged on to look for activities to complete, but we received nothing to alert us to this.

No email or other form of contact (e.g. Class Dojo) from the class teacher. A link to a generic website post from the head about provision for keyworker children. That's it.

I'm really hoping that they're just being slow to pull it together (though if so, why? I thought the schools were all asked to have remote learning provision ready to go in the event of isolation, etc.), but we got very little last time & I'm concerned that it's going to be the same this time too.

As back-up I've signed up to an online tutoring site & have started to put together my own curriculum, but I'm WFH full time and so creating a learning schedule is taking up time I don't really have to spare.

I'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt, but I'm not optimistic. Sad

Punxsutawney · 06/01/2021 12:51

Ds is year 12 with an EHCP. He's had no contact from school yet. He's very anxious.

We have had one email sent to all parents. Which had incorrect information it it. Ds is new to this school and I'm really disappointed.

nomorecheese · 06/01/2021 13:02

My son has gone in today as he has a kw place but when he had to isolate for two weeks because of a burst bubble in October I was so impressed with the set up. He's in year 2 and they had live class assembly every morning at 9 then set lessons with assignments throughout the day which were marked and sent back with feedback within an hour or two and a story read by one of the teachers at the end of each day. This was on MS teams.

Tbh throughout this whole thing I cannot fault DS's school they have bent over backwards to help both children and parents and keep everyone safe and they still smile when you see them every day although it must be so hard. Wish I could give all the staff a hug! Same at DS1's nursery. They're amazing.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 06/01/2021 13:07

Punxsutawney, just a thought if your ds is feeling anxious could he take a look at Seneca for his subjects? Both of my year 12’s have it and find it really helpful

Anxiety is awful, both mine dc and DH have it and their therapists recommended the calm and headspace apps in the short term

Punxsutawney · 06/01/2021 13:20

Thanks Tom. I think Ds may have Seneca through school.

He's on the Camhs caseload for his mental health difficulties and is meant to have fortnightly visits. We have not had any contact from Camhs now for three weeks and I've been told they can't visit during lockdown. It's difficult as he won't use the phone or communicate online. Another lockdown is going to be really difficult for him.

We have been fighting for support for so long and have finally secured an EHCP and now school has closed.

Ormally · 06/01/2021 13:22

Yes, very happy (10 yo age group). It's slower going than last format of tasks which wasn't 'live', but both children and teacher are well-involved and focussed. Thank you to those who are coming up with, and delivering this.

SillyOldMummy · 06/01/2021 13:23

Yes it is like a different school from last spring and summer. So impressed. Well done teachers keep it up!

formerbabe · 06/01/2021 13:23

Both schools my dc attend have been fantastic

helloxhristmas · 06/01/2021 13:24

Yes it's completely different to last time when we got a few twinkl sheets if we were lucky.

The teacher is running a full school day.

CaraDuneRedux · 06/01/2021 13:25

Very impressed with what DS's school have put together. Still struggling (but that's down to me not being a qualified teacher, and DS having dyslexia).

Kendodd · 06/01/2021 13:26

State secondary.

Provided all students with laptops by March last year (this was planned pre covid anyway, just stepped up)
Students without broadband have been assisted or are in school (very few)
Lessons are all live on Teams and following normal timetable.

I know we are very lucky.

listsandbudgets · 06/01/2021 13:27

Yes - DD in year 10. Full time table with live lessons.

Today DS in year 4 - Live maths lesson, recorded video for English with activities, a DT project and he's got science coming up shortly though not sure what form that will take - he's hoping for a practical I'm hoping not especially as they were doing the digestive system

ShanghaiDiva · 06/01/2021 13:29

Dd’s School has been excellent. She is year 10 so teachers were preparing at end of December for at least one week of online learning.

Daisy829 · 06/01/2021 13:31

Yes it’s amazing! I’ve hardly seen my 10yo dd as she’s doing live lessons and is loving it. Last time I couldn’t get her to engage at all as it was mainly work sheets.
My 6yo hasn’t had live lessons yet but the structure to the learning is much better this time. I’m working too but it feels much more manageable

thefallthroughtheair · 06/01/2021 13:32

Yes, but DC in a very academic private school so I would expect nothing less.
As to teachers only being told a couple of days ago, my teacher friends were all preparing for online learning over Xmas, just in case, as they should have been, being professional people.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 06/01/2021 13:35

Yep. Small rural primary, totally on top of it. DD only in reception so it's not too onerous and she's enjoying it so far.
