Has anyone been happy with the home schooling provision provided today?

Just that really. I have been very impressed with the provision - I think that the teachers must have spent a lot of time over Christmas preparing for this. Yesterday was a planned INSET anyway but at 9am today my daughter had a recorded English, maths and geography lesson ready and a live assembly on Teams. All the lessons were interactive and the teacher was available via messaging. She struggles a bit with maths and the teacher has scheduled a breakout with her tomorrow.

They have offered to provide laptops and internet if households are struggling with having to share devices or internet service.

I am so impressed with her far they have come since the last lock down and just wondered how other schools are doing?

Yes its much improved from March lockdown - got a full timetable rather than half one. DS was gutted though, he'd planned a lovely holiday for himself until March.

I think it’s too much personally. 3 hours a day of timetabled independent work (little of which looks like it can be done without parent support) plus 4 days a week of live zoom teaching from 9am for an hour or two. How that will be possible with both of us working full time (Dh can’t work from home, though can take time off which no pay to be at home), I don’t know. I’m hoping they’ll be flexible and understanding that it may not be realistic for children who have working parents. I think we’re probably one of the only ones in the class without a parent at home or with a school hours job.

I should add mine is Y3.

Yes. It absolutely could not be faulted, there was a full timetable of lessons sticking to the normal timetable which was very well organised.

FoolsAssassin · 06/01/2021 05:47

Yes really good and offer of graphics tablet if needed.

His old school who were awful with it last year have hugely improved too, with parents all sounding pleased.

mogloveseggs · 06/01/2021 05:48

Ds' school (y4) brilliant. Full days planned with lots of zoom. I'm a little lot overwhelmed with it but we will give it our best shot.
Dd (y11) great. A little ott with the english provision though and not many live lessons still which is a shame as she struggles with motivation on her own.

Same. I see that for lots of people a full timetable is a good thing, but for us it's a complete nightmare. I've already warned the kids that their daily zoom calls can only happen if I'm not in a meeting at the same time.
Redwinestillfine · 06/01/2021 07:22

No bit I think they were working towards being in....We have just been directed to a few websites. I am hoping for some live lessons next week or videos at the very least.

MrsJBaptiste · 06/01/2021 07:25

Yes, it was great for both boys (Year 9 and Sixth Form college)

The only negative was our WiFi which wasn't great with 3 of us on Teams at one time! 😯

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 06/01/2021 07:30

I’ve been really impressed with ours. Full timetable for both children (years 5 & 6), three zooms a day and then smaller breakout groups according to ability. Youngest is not impressed that he has a full day starting at 9.00am!

Crunchymum · 06/01/2021 07:36

Y1 work wasn't on yesterday but I managed to print off all my Y3 work for the rest of this week.

Unfortunately our school is only able to provide a tablet or laptop if you have nothing at home so mine will have to share (we can also use my work laptop if we get stuck but obviously I'll also be working!)

If it all goes to shit then I've got the appropriate KS workbooks so we can use them. Plus we'll read and play cards and boardgames (plus learn some new ones)

My main aim is not to get too stressed this time round.

I have 3 kids (my youngest is a disabled toddler) and I work DP works out of the house so there is only so much I can humanly do.

TravellingSpoon · 06/01/2021 07:37

Dd is in school but is doing the same as those who would be at home. It is secondary but her timetable is the same as it would be in school but via zoom and teams. She has to take headphones into school.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/01/2021 07:37

Yesterday was only admin. (Multiple messages from school outlining expectations, KW provision, how to get help with tech etc.)
So today is Day 1. We are supposed to get 3 1hr prerecorded sessions. I'll see how it goes. I'm just relieved it's not live lessons so we can be flexible. Teachers available 8.30-4.30 for help as required.

MrsMomoa · 06/01/2021 07:38

ScatteredMama82

They were told at 8 last night. Give them a break!!

This!

Crunchymum · 06/01/2021 07:39

And yes the provision of work seems fine.
Y3 has 5 tasks per day
Reading, writing, spelling, maths and topic (the topic changes daily but is always something creative. The reading and writing will encompass different things - this week its poetry, next week things are all more science based and then week after will encompass geography)

Vanannabananna · 06/01/2021 07:41

We had a full day on zoom. Very impressed. Teacher is brilliant. DS home schooling two days a week then in school as KW child 3 days I work.

MillieEpple · 06/01/2021 07:47

Yes, my year 9 has had really good lessons, all day. The school even said thst they have teamed up with another school so in the event of a teacher falling ill or isolating, a relevant lesson will come from that thier buddy teacher. (this is a small state secondary so some subjects only have 1 teacher).

Although i am glad we have wifi and a computer and his own room.

Snuzzle · 06/01/2021 07:47

Very happy so far, DD is year 2 and had work uploaded to her app yesterday plus spellings and times tables to practice. She was in class on Monday and brought home a months worth of reading too.
We’ve had a message from her teacher with a new email address especially for any new queries and to say that as of Monday they’ll be getting at least 3 hours of lessons through the app every day

Enb76 · 06/01/2021 07:47

I’m pretty impressed so far - everything is on Teams, live lessons for everything even PE and most of the clubs are also running. There has clearly been a huge amount of effort put into this. The school has lent tablets and the local community have also been donating items to families who would otherwise struggle.

justanotherneighinparadise · 06/01/2021 07:50

The home provision will no doubt be fine. But it isn’t school. My children know it isn’t school. Nor am I a teacher. So it’s a bit better than nothing.

Bexily · 06/01/2021 07:51

We've had a text to say DD (Yr 5) will be moving to online learning from Monday, nothing yet for DS (Yr 1) but the school found out about the closure the same time as we did. We have learning packs that we were given last term incase their bubble popped so we're working on those.

LadyCatStark · 06/01/2021 07:55

Yes very. DS had online Teams lessons and an activity for each lesson except Games. He has a full timetable for the rest of the week too and homework (which he did on the Games slot). He’s year 7 in a state Grammar School.

His primary school were amazing in the last lockdown too so we’re incredibly lucky!

WeatherwaxOn · 06/01/2021 07:55

Yes, it's been good. Live lessons in key subjects. Opportunities to speak to the teacher (for kids, during lesson), supporting work to complete and a system to submit it which allows time enough for working parents, and/or those working with shared devices.

Piersmistress · 06/01/2021 08:02

Secondary school has live lessons every lesson on the timetable. I’m much happier with this than how it was last time and during isolations.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 06/01/2021 09:57

It’s been quite interesting here to watch as although DS is experiencing online learning for the first time in year 12, dd has been at an online school for the last 6 years (disabled) and is also in year 12 so to compare the two has been interesting

Dd is also quite stressed as at the moment AS and A levels with international exam boards have not yet been cancelled and she may still have to sit them in June
