Have you been part of an online group or forum that just died?

I was just looking at my neighbourhood forum this evening (not on FB) and it used to be really lively, lots of posts, sometimes quite amusing. It was started in something like 2007 so quite early in the timeline of these things.

Sadly now I think it's about to go to that great Forum in the sky. I can't put my finger on why it has become so deathly dull. Combination of some people posting too much (so it makes you roll your eyes that old so and so is dominating every thread), and I guess WhatsApp and FB groups for those who prefer them. Also a marked lack of interest from the Admin, who I think is a one man band, to doing anything other than the bare minimum with the Forum.

I remember Friends Reuinited and how popular it was and then ... pffft!

YAYW You and your wedding. I loved it when planning my wedding, other mad women obsessing over ridiculous details too.

JuneFromBethesda · 04/01/2021 20:42

Hitched, then the spin-off forum The Deadwood. Started with wedding planning but it became its own little community. Eventually I think most people met up on FB instead, and the forum died.

Mums in Scotland Together (MiST)

Must've been in the mid 90's? Eventually the admin took her favourites to a new site and left the rest of us behind Grin.

StorkNet was a US parenting board - was invaluable when pregnant with my first. Moved abroad and couldn't access it for a few months, came back and it had imploded Sad

Loved BMC

PenelopeStern · 04/01/2021 20:50

Ebay.com and Ebay.co.uk community up to about 2007, used to be great fun and then got nasty, lots of spite and backstabbing and people got banned. handbag, iVillage were useful but just vanished.

MSE forums are still ok.

sherrystrull · 04/01/2021 20:57

I used to love the Big Brother forums back in the day. And the LUTers. (Live update thread)

CherryValanc · 04/01/2021 20:57

Yes, there was an Irish forum for mums. It was so entertaining. Lots of humorous interaction. (Also some serious posts and helpful advice.)

It just started losing that feeling, it was like over a few months it got a different atmosphere and started severly bleeding users.

CuteOrangeElephant · 04/01/2021 21:00

My favourite fabric group on Facebook imploded because the community manager objected to racist fabric the mother company was releasing.

MrsAvocet · 04/01/2021 21:04

I'm another ex iVillager. I was a community leader on several boards and made some lifelong friends there. I've never liked another forum quite as much.

Campervan69 · 04/01/2021 21:06

Logantrical I was on Babygreenhouse as well 😁

OohImBlindedByTheLights · 04/01/2021 21:09

Girland! My first ever experience of a forum lol! Was on it in my teens until it just disappeared overnight

Handbag. There could be sniping but overall it was very supportive and certain forums there got me through some really tough times. I still miss it.

The old C4 GBBF?

Spent many a crazy night on there in the early 2000's

Hitched- a wedding forum. Lively when I was getting married 10yrs ago, but very little traffic the last time I looked

Netmums- I was on it a few years before I found mumsnet was much busier

IToldYouIWantedTheUnicorn · 04/01/2021 21:32

@MrsAvocet Another Ivillager here too! I went on there for years, am still really close friends with people I met on my Mums Club/Mums Due boards when I had my kids. Good times!

HermannlovesPauline · 04/01/2021 21:35

You and your wedding - didn’t go back after my wedding but still felt sad when I got a notification to say that it was being bought out and closed

BeBraveAndBeKind · 04/01/2021 21:36

I was a member of an American fertility site called Ovusoft back in 2000-2003. It was similar to Mumsnet in that it had boards for each stage of TTC/Pregnancy and parenthood as well as more community type boards for general likeminded chat but it also had fertility charting software that ran alongside and chatrooms.

It imploded really suddenly and all the connections were lost.

Lemonpiano · 04/01/2021 21:37

@ThreeLadsPointingAtAStar

Hobby forum that was a thriving community and a big part of my life. As well as the hobby-related boards there was a great chat board that was really active and interesting.

Facebook killed it as everyone moved into splinter groups and stopped posting

Same. I miss it.
AlexCabot · 04/01/2021 21:38

I used to lurk on Etiquette Hell during night feeds.

Hundreds of posts arguing over whether or not it's rude (or tacky. They bloody loved the word tacky.) to have an exclamation mark on a wedding invitation or some such bobbins.

It was actually very entertaining!

SwedishEdith · 04/01/2021 21:41

The Guardian used to have forums that were really funny and/or clever and interesting. More like Reddit, I suppose. I know they still allow comments on some articles but these were not article-related. And then they pulled it.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 04/01/2021 21:44

Another ex Hitcher and Deadwooder here - some bright spark moved it over to Facebook when the forum was experiencing technical difficulties and that was the end of it.

I really hate Facebook - I don’t like using my personal information.

Hushabyelullaby · 04/01/2021 21:45

I used to be a CL (community leader) on ivillage before it disappeared. The group I was part of all had our babies in the same (ish), month. We are all still in contact in a private group on FB. It has been over 14 years now, some of us have met in person, most haven't. We share most things and are a close knit group.
