DS age 9 with giant feet, help!

CornedBeef451 · 04/01/2021 15:35

Does anyone happen to know about shoe sizes?

DS is age 9 with massive feet and he's just told me his trainers don't fit nor do his school shoes...he says they do but has form for not realising until they're really tight. They're both a 4 1/2 and only a few months old so I hadn't thought to check sooner.

I've used the Startrite measuring gauge and he is coming out as an L 5.5 H or L6G and there are none available on their website nor Clarke's.

I've measured my feet and I'm an L6.5G and I usually wear a ladies 6 1/5 or 7 wide fit.

Does that mean he can just switch to a standard men's size 6 now? I assume they're wider than women's fit? If so, any recommendations for a suitable online shop?

Thank you to anyone who bothers to read this very boring question!

Men's shoes are wider than a women's and and as children's feet are generally slimmer, I was advised to get DS women's shoes for now.

redcandlelight · 04/01/2021 15:38

yes, my teens switched to men's styles around that age/shoe size.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 04/01/2021 15:41

DD switched to women's shoes at the same age. If you bought womens brogues I don't think they would look out of place on a boy.

Or as its winter get an inner sole and thick socks and buy mens shoes.

If he's a G/H width then men's should be ok, can you get a really cheap pair for him to try?

KarmaNoMore · 04/01/2021 15:48

Men shoes are wider but you can add insoles to reduce the space plus sports socks or if he allows you, get him women shoes.

This worked for me by getting the shoes for him to try at home, there’s no way on Earth he would have worn them if he knew they were for women even when they looked the same (but narrower).

CornedBeef451 · 04/01/2021 15:55

Thanks everyone!

I was getting very confused about the different sets of sizes, why is it so hard?

I can't believe his feet are nearly the same size as mine at age 9, they're growing incredibly quickly and he's only average height.

I will order some women's and men's size 6's and hope for the best. Thanks again!

my teens were like tiger cubs that age - very big hands and feet compared to the rest of the body :)

I’m getting some Clark’s Youth school shoes coming up online in 6G:

www.clarks.co.uk/c/Loxham-Derby-Youth/p/26151593

www.clarks.co.uk/c/Scala-Loop-Youth-/p/26142831

www.clarks.co.uk/c/Mendip-Craft-Youth/p/26142887

My DS had these Rhino shoes in various sizes (but always H width) - online available in 6H:

www.startriteshoes.com/rhino-sherman-black-leather-boys-lace-up-school-shoes

Charles Clinkard often carry stock - they have 5.5 G and 6 G and H fittings:

www.charlesclinkard.co.uk/boys-c15/shoes-c16/startrite-rhino-sherman-senior-boys-school-shoes-p27927/s358418?cid=GBP&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpKifz9SC7gIVz-3tCh01dw4cEAQYASABEgLOdPD_BwE

You’re never going to get much choice in boys school shoes in wide fittings though - in store it’s usually what they can dig out at the back of the stockroom (bitter voice of experience).

SabrinaThwaite · 04/01/2021 16:15

Oh, and the Startrite Dylan are good for wide feet - 5.5 H and 6 G available:

Fattoushka · 04/01/2021 16:17

Footasylum sell junior footwear up to size 6, obviously predominantly trainers but they do sell kickers and some other type of branded school shoes at reasonable prices

CornedBeef451 · 04/01/2021 16:19

Thanks everyone. I'll check out the links.

I've just realised adult sized sale trainers are significantly cheaper than Clarke's kid shoes, his giant feet might save me a fortune!

My dd started wearing size 39 at aged 9 and that was too big for most children's shoes. It is hard finding shoes narrow enough though.

Talipesmum · 04/01/2021 16:22

Yeah, we just went through that about 6 months ago. Clarks stop selling anything except school shoes at around that shoe size I think. We switched to sports direct (men’s or women’s) for trainers - annoying as it is often not possible to search by width fitting. Nike seem to have the widest fit. Also as they aren’t kids shoes any more, they get more expensive :-(

Namechangeme87 · 04/01/2021 16:23

Mine is same age and a 6 just look in the youth sections . He wears trainers mainly though even for school !

TramaDollface · 04/01/2021 16:26

My son went into size 7 at that age! Not a stealth boast!!

I’ve never had a problem getting shoes for him to be honest but now he’s an 8.5, it’s quite hard to dodge the laces......

Hoppinggreen · 04/01/2021 16:30

Mine was a size 6 by aged 9
Now he’s 12 and he complained his size 10 wellies felt tight yesterday

CornedBeef451 · 04/01/2021 16:39

I'm glad it's not just DS with disproportionately large feet!

As a stop gap I've ordered 2 pairs of trainers in the Sports Direct sale, one men's, one women's, delivery tomorrow.

He may have to wear snow boots for school tomorrow, it'll be a great look with his uniform!

I'm hoping to use the Clarke's offer of free shoes if they grow before February, luckily I kept the receipt safe, I just have to figure out if we can go into a store as we're in tier 4.

Thanks everyone, this is such a great place for sensible advice.

Seconding Nike trainers for wide feet - having tried on everything in numerous stores, we always go back to men’s Nike Revolution - they start at size 6 in Sports Direct, come in half sizes, £35.

Sandseasurfsun · 04/01/2021 17:04

Next does boys leather school shoes in a wide fit up to a men’s size 10 (EUR44) even have Velcro straps up to that size. Great for primary school boys with above average feet!

H1978 · 04/01/2021 17:08

Dd (10) has got tiny feet, she’s only a 13 1/2. I’m going to struggle to get her high school style all black shoes in September. She takes after dh, he’s only a size 6.

lesleyashfishlips · 04/01/2021 17:11

Geox shoes do shoes up to an adults size 8. Ricosta have some crossover into their adult ranges as well
My 10 year old daughter has adult size 8 feet. I feel your pain.

Sleepplease2021 · 04/01/2021 18:01

Next have a good selection of boys shoes up to an 8/9. We've bought quite a few pairs of trainers over the years, and they have a lot of lace less options which has been handy for us!

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 04/01/2021 18:46

We have this problem with DD who is 11 and already a size 8.5/9. She has very narrow feet though so standard women's shoes are all too wide. She lives permanently in a pair of Chelsea boots from Clarks in winter and Birkenstocks (which are adjustable) in summer.
DelurkingAJ · 04/01/2021 18:50

Girls with narrow feet - try Jones or anything American or Italian (I have 8AA feet...).

Place marking for boys as DS1 is in Y3 with size 3 feet.

GorgeousGoldies · 04/01/2021 18:51

Can we please have some stories of children whose feet stopped growing in primary school? 😂

My DD has size 8 feet age 10 too. I’m worried that they’re never going to stop growing!
