Do you have an electric blanket?

I'm thinking of getting one. DP doesn't want one but he's only here at weekends, I need something to keep me warm when he's not here to cuddle up to! Are they worth it? What brands should I look out for/avoid?

This thread is slightly old now so some of the suggestions may be outdated, but if you’ve landed here looking for Mumsnetter-approved recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best electric blanket page with loads of great options that have been tried and tested by Mumsnet users. I've had one for years. It's one of the reasons I look forward to winter!

Topsy44 · 04/01/2021 17:09

I have one and I love it!! I don’t have any heating in my bedroom so it feels like heaven to get into a toasty bed.

ruabon12 · 04/01/2021 17:37

No, so cannot help re suitable brands.

Elouera · 04/01/2021 17:44

I used to have one years ago and just started reviewing them again. My must haves:

  • duel controls
  • check the length of the electrical plug, especially if there is only 1 socket in your room and its on the other side of your room!
  • Check reviews because some are really uncomfortable and you can feel the wires
  • Check the size of it against your bed. I've often bought the next size up, otherwise there is a large gap either leaving your head or feet frozen, as the electric blanket doesnt fill the entire bed to the edges!
Panickingpavlova · 04/01/2021 17:54

Yes, love it.

I have not used it much but when we've been out for a walk, the sheer comfort of turning it on and snuggling under it is bliss.

For me it's also peace of mind if the heating goes. Dreamland but through jl.

Chasingsquirrels · 04/01/2021 18:13

I threw one away a few months ago, it was nearly 30 years old and had been unused on the spare bed for years. I thought it was best got rid of given its age.
The bloke I'm seeing and I were talking about them in bed last night, I'm fine when he's here - and he warms my side up for me, but not when he isn't.
My old one had very fine wires running through and I felt them, are new ones better?

PaperMonster · 04/01/2021 18:18

Love my electric blanket! So toasty!

bellinisurge · 04/01/2021 18:21

I had one for years but now I have a Baavet. It's so cosy and warm.

ArtemisBean · 04/01/2021 18:23

Hell yes! Freezing cold room + toasty bed = heaven. We have a dual one and DH never turns his side on... then comes over to my side and hogs all my warmth!!

Ticklytoes · 04/01/2021 18:23

I prefer a hot water bottle. I do warm the bed with the hairdryer if it’s really cold.

openallthetime · 04/01/2021 18:24

yes, just amazing. put it on before you get into bed (under the duvet) for ultra snuggly warmth.

openallthetime · 04/01/2021 18:25

we have Dreamland ones, bought from lakeland. There's a £50 one which is ok, but the more expensive larger thicker ones are better, as the £50 is a bit thinner / smaller.

Eggsley · 04/01/2021 18:28

Yes, I have one. DH bought it for me and I thought it was a really odd present but actually it is THE BEST present I think he has ever bought for me! I love it, it has done wonders for my back pain as well.

Cocolapew · 04/01/2021 18:29

I have a single one because DH doesn't like being warm in bed Confused

Afeckinchoo · 04/01/2021 18:29

I work nights and when mine broke last year my sleep really suffered because I get so cold off nights, not usually but I do when I've been at work, cold 'inside' and I can't sleep because of it. I got a new one but it's cheap and cheerful, on balance it's better than being cold, but if I could afford it I'd get a better one as I can feel the integrated 'box' due to where the plugs are in my room and how I have to have the blanket positioned, and I can feel the wires too, though an extra sheet can help with that.
I'd also get one that automatically turns off after 2 or 3 hours, mine is either on or off and I do often fall asleep with it on and wake up medium to well done a few hours later! I do switch the radiator off in my room, or the heating all together if I'm the only one home when I'm nights as I tend to get too hot towards the evening when sleeping but am freezing when I get in, so it can save me a bit on gas too.

I have one and I love it.

Ha! I have a single overblanket as DH gets too hot. Oddly he objects to me warming up my feet on him so the blanket is bliss. Think it's a dreamland one.
PugInTheHouse · 04/01/2021 18:45

They are amazing, we have ones with separate controls so we don't both have to have it on

camoflaguesocks · 04/01/2021 18:45

I have two for each sofa downstairs but would only put them on the bed if the boiler packed in. They are lovely for downstairs watching a film etc ams I've cut down on the heating on an evening as a result

WingingItSince1973 · 04/01/2021 18:45

I have an electric throw which has been an absolute life saver for me because I am in alot of pain, mainly at night. Its one of those that can be wrapped around the body, has variable controls and a timer. I like it better than a traditional electric blanket as you can wrap up in it xx

DinosApple · 04/01/2021 18:56

Best thing ever! I had a Dreamland one, then once that packed up after several years use I just got a cheapy from Amazon which has also been fine.

Don't think they are recommended for use with memory foam though.

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/01/2021 18:56

Bought one when we lived rurally years ago, love it.

MiddleClassMother · 04/01/2021 19:02

I have one but never use it as it makes me feel like an old lady, I just turn the heating on now, it costs more but it's worth it.

Gertie75 · 04/01/2021 19:07

I don't have one on the bed since starting the menopause, I sleep naked with the duvet only covering my bottom half.

During the day I'm freezing though so I've got a fluffy electric throw that I wrap myself in when I'm on the sofa in the evening, it's great, I'm covered in it now and lovely and toasty.

Clutterbugsmum · 04/01/2021 19:12

No I'm menopausal, the last thing I need is a electric blanket Grin.

But Hd has a single one on his side of the bed as he gets cold. It works for us.
