DD (10) has a skin condition, and has started saying she hates her face and is ugly Sad. She's a big reader, and I wondered whether anyone can recommend any age appropriate novels which may help. She's read Wonder. Anything else...?
TIA

It is frustrating - I found fiction about skin conditions for younger children and older teens but not for her age. Maybe one of these skin conditions helplines could give a suggestion if you can see a relevant one - they might have book lists.

Here is a list of some books filtered on “body image” you might have to plough through but some really good suggestions on there :)

My Body is Me, by Rachel Rooney - all about accepting differences, and living in the body that you have. Really lovely book, beautiful Ahlberg illustrations. You can see a preview here:

(though would it be too young for her, not sure, I liked it in my 50s!)

It's not exactly what you're asking for, but the Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls books feature a lot of girls and women overcoming adversity.

Could be worth looking at for inspiration? For what it's worth I grew up with head to toe eczema so I do understand. At a certain point (mid teens probably) I was able to turn it on it head and stop hiding away; it gave me an in-built dickhead radar and I knew quickly who was a good person and who wasn't by the way they reacted to me.

If she's up for something a little old fashioned, there's always Anne of Green Gables. She was very unhappy with her appearance, particularly her freckles.

Denie by Judy bloom. It’s not facial but spinal if I remember rightly but I remember it being a good book

My DD (age nearly 10) enjoyed Cookie by Jacqueline Wilson. It's got some mature themes in - eg domestic violence (her dad effectively murders her rabbit, a bit gruesome) - so you might want to read it first - but it introduces a character called Beauty who does not feel at all beautiful and is bullied at school by a classically beautiful girl for her looks, her clothes etc. Deciding you like how you look, even when everyone else is making you feel bad, would be a relevant theme here (again not directly about skin conditions but perhaps you don't need it to be too directly relatable).

Also try "What Not to do If You Turn Invisible" about a girl who is trying to fix her acne and ends up becoming invisible... definitely worth reading even if it isnt entirely about the skin condition! This would be a fabulous one to listen to on a
Audible was it will entertain the whole family.

I used to love The Cat Ate My Gymsuit.

The 'Girls' series by Jacqueline wilson. Girls in love. Girls under pressure and I cant remember the other titles. Its centre mainly around a girl who struggles with her appearance and all written in first person from her thoughts. I read it around that age too.

There is at least one more book after Wonder - I haven't read it but it features the same characters.

RightSaidFrederika · 05/01/2021 01:00

Thank you all - some brilliant stuff here.

We're now listening to the audiobook of What Not To Do When You're invisible, and it's great. I'll follow up on the other suggestions too.

Thank you thank you x
