DD (10) has a skin condition, and has started saying she hates her face and is ugly Sad. She's a big reader, and I wondered whether anyone can recommend any age appropriate novels which may help. She's read Wonder. Anything else...?
TIA

I don’t know of any specifically but there’s a brilliant Facebook page (and I think website) called mighty girls with links to all sorts of wonderful literature. You might find something on there?

GhostWhisperer · 03/01/2021 23:04

Katie Piper has several books and a charity, maybe useful to look into.

RealisticSketch · 03/01/2021 23:10

My suggestions gave already been said. But I hope your dd finds acceptance of herself and from others, such a hard thing to deal with growing up, it's horrible being different for any reason let alone one so personal. Katie Piper had also done some TV programmes which have been very good too.

Interested in this thread?

Not a book recommendation but there is a charity called changing faces that offers a range of support for people with a visible difference

Body image book for girls by Charlotte Markey is very good

RightSaidFrederika · 04/01/2021 01:34

Thanks, all - greatly appreciated.

Any standard novels which are about girls who struggle with their appearance/aren't conventionally considered "pretty" would be really useful, too. I'm having a bit of a blank about it....

Thanks again.

Not a novel but "Break the Mould" by Sinead Burke.

"Sometimes it can seem like the world isn't built for you or like you don't belong. But why should you change who you are for the sake of others? Sinéad Burke is an advocate, activist, teacher, writer and British vogue cover model. She also happens to be a little person at three and a half feet tall. Reflecting on her experiences growing up, Sinéad offers a heartfelt and inspiring guide to young readers on believing in themselves and finding comfort and pride in their own skin."

In Ready Player One the lead female character has a large birthmark on her face. She hides behind her avatar and is revealed to have birthmark. Disclaimer I've only seen the film not the book, so I dont know how sensitively the book deals with it.

Greatmusic · 04/01/2021 11:52

Here are a few fiction suggestions for her age group, hope they are useful. I hope she is able to feel more comfortable and accept herself.

Smile by Raina Telgemeier is a graphic novel about a girl who has a severe injury to her two front teeth.

Lucky Broken Girl by Ruth Behar is about a girl's experience of a body cast and recovery following a car accident.

Sticks and Stones by Abby Cooper is about a girl who finds that the words that people use to describe her appear on her arms and legs.

I wouldn't give a 10 year old Ready Player One for so many reasons. (For one, it's awful...)

Why? I really liked it!

Not a book, but the recent BBC adaptation of Malory Towers features a young actress with a skin condition, if you think it would help your DD to see other girls like her?

Nighthawker · 04/01/2021 12:09

The young woman's name is Beth Bradfield and there's an interview with her here where she discusses her condition, OP.

Ugly by Robert Hoge is a memoir - he was born with a tumour on his face, had surgery for this and was bullied growing up.

Greatmusic · 04/01/2021 12:25

Another memoir: Born Just Right by Jordan Reeves - a girl who was born without the bottom half of her left arm.

ThrowawaySecondarySchool · 04/01/2021 14:04

@LouiseBelchersBunnyEars

Sex and masturbation references, lots of swearing, a bombing that kills a lot of people, and while I enjoyed the 80s references (being an 80s kid), they are OTT and not really interesting/relevant to a 10 year old.

BlueChampagne · 04/01/2021 14:11

Wonder by R J Palacio

BikeRunSki · 04/01/2021 14:21

It’s old, but Deenie by Judy Blume is about a girl who wears a back brace. She has a friend who has very bad facial eczema, it’s about how they one to terms with their bodies.

It is a young adult book, and it must be 45 years since I read it, so I can’t remember enough detail to renter whether it’s suitable for a 10 year old. It’s also from the 1970s, so it may be a bit dated, but I think it might contain the the type of theme/message and characters that you are after.

Seeline · 04/01/2021 14:31

Wonder

BikeRunSki · 04/01/2021 14:40

The OP’s child has read Wonder.

RightSaidFrederika · 04/01/2021 15:03

Thank you all so much for the ideas. Sorry not to tag directly, but I'm reading and digesting every post, and following up on the ideas. Thank you Flowers

It's surprisingly difficult to find tween/teen novels which are directly about this (especially focused on faces), but I'm sure they must be out there.

Deenie by Judy Blume is about a schoolgirl with scoliosis. Excellent read.
