I'm going for a walk up a hill at midnight, it's going to be my new tradition.

We don't tend to do much for new year anyway, perhaps have friends over or go to nearby friends at the most. Most years we stay at home and have an early night.

I've just got the urge this year to see out the new year officially. I live rurally and the land is private (ours) so I won't see anyone else, I'm planning to walk up the hill behind our house on my own and have a glass of wine. It's a clear night, lots of stars and a bit of snow.

DH is making noises about going to bed after skyfall has finished, he will probably be asleep before then.

Make sure you don’t fall asleep/trip or fall/pass out and then die of hyperthermia.

Kanaloa · 31/12/2020 22:43

That sounds utterly peaceful. I probably wouldn’t as I’m a massive wimp and hate being out alone in the dark - especially out up a hill!

Enjoy, hopefully it rounds off this wonderful year well.

icedaisy · 31/12/2020 22:43

Lovely, enjoy. We are very rural and we usually do this with BIL and sil who also live here. We also BBQ up there sometimes and sil and I often go to put the world to rights.

Tonight however, I am snuggling my newborn and missing the walk for the first year in about two decades. Mainly because I would have to get dressed and I have decided to wear pyjamas for the foreseeable future.

Thanks for the reminder. I'll bear it in mind Grin

Based on the concerns raised I've done a full risk assessment and added a mini roll and a bag of wotsits to the rations alongside the wine and put another pair of socks on.

Sounds lovely! I often used to just walk around my bit of London (we’re up a hill so you can the fireworks, but really residential so not many people on the streets).

But DS4 is asleep in bed so can’t really do that this year! Grin

Oldraver · 31/12/2020 22:58

We usually go out onto the patio and listen to the usually very pissed bells ringing in the next village

ParkheadParadise · 31/12/2020 22:58

@Herdwick
Enjoy ur walk, wotsits & mini roll sounds good.

DoubleHelix79 · 31/12/2020 23:00

Sounds awesome. If it wasn't below freezing outside and my bed wasn't so nice and cozy (electric blanket, yey) I'd definitely consider joining in. Happy new year (in an hour!

AnyFucker · 31/12/2020 23:03

It's very, very cold

Our tradition is NY Day walk up a hill. After the Buck's Fizz and bacon brunch, paracetamol and pint of water.

I have been known to stop and vomit on the way

I love the dark. I've always lived rurally, streetlights aren't something in my sphere of reference. With the moon and the snow it should be pretty light tonight.

I once walked up a mountain to catch the first sunrise of the new year. I have never, ever, been that cold but it was lovely. And after this year, it sound perfect.

cushioncovers · 31/12/2020 23:03

It's freezing outside really frosty where I am. Make sure you wrap up warm. And take your phone. Enjoy.

AcornAutumn · 31/12/2020 23:04

Sounds wonderful OP. Impressed by your ration pack too.

I live in the urbs. They used to be suburbs.

Whenever I go away with my sister, she gets freaked out by proper country dark. I think it's wonderful.

Katinthedoghouse · 31/12/2020 23:08

I’m doing the same...I’ll wave to you

Herdwick · 31/12/2020 23:09

I know, even better! I'm well equipped for cold weather don't worry. I work in it most days, I would take my balaclava but there's no wine sipping hole in it so a hat and scarf will have to do.

DH has just said if I'm going to go out would I mind taking some silage up to the feeder with me so he can have a lay on in the morning. My walk may be turning into a quadbike ride.

No phone signal. No one that will answer the phone if I could ring them.

We did this every year when I was in Edinburgh as a student so we could avoid the street party. It was fabulous. Unfortunately no hills near me now. Enjoy!

Hollybutnoivy · 31/12/2020 23:27

That sounds lovely. I haven't been in the proper dark for years.

Herdwick · 31/12/2020 23:32

I've been for a wee and microwaved a jug of mulled wine to put in a flask. It's time to go.

If I can get data signal at the top I'll see you at midnight. Happy New Year!

You know that next Dec 31st, as likely, it'll be wet, 8 degrees, blustery, cloudy. Just- Not Nice? 😂

Tonight is, for many of us, a beautiful gift of cold, sharp, still, silent night.

Enjoy.

Xx

Honeyroar · 31/12/2020 23:34

I used to do this a lot. Took a flask of mulled wine and watched the fireworks all around. I’d love to do it tonight but one of my dogs is terrified of fireworks.

Frownette · 31/12/2020 23:35

God I read that as you microwaved the wee.

Happy new year! Enjoy!

mineofuselessinformation · 31/12/2020 23:36

Have a lovely walk.
I can think of nothing nicer.
But, do take care.
