I'm going for a walk up a hill at midnight, it's going to be my new tradition.

We don't tend to do much for new year anyway, perhaps have friends over or go to nearby friends at the most. Most years we stay at home and have an early night.

I've just got the urge this year to see out the new year officially. I live rurally and the land is private (ours) so I won't see anyone else, I'm planning to walk up the hill behind our house on my own and have a glass of wine. It's a clear night, lots of stars and a bit of snow.

DH is making noises about going to bed after skyfall has finished, he will probably be asleep before then.

I'd love a moonlit walk but it's sheet ice everywhere here and I'm not exactly a mountain goat these days

Happy New Year OP! I bet it will be hard to describe the loveliness but i hope you will try!

I'm back. Safe and sound. It wasn't actually that cold and I felt rather warm on the way up.

I decided to perch myself at a cairn that's sort of on the way to the top for my little picnic.

I could hear fireworks going off from about 3 miles away but couldn't see anything as the hill fog hand come in (so no stars either Sad) now back watching withnail and I.

Was actually the nicest new year I've had for a while. Don't think the sheep appreciated my version of Auld Lang Syne though.

Happy new year op. Not the same, but me and ds went out for a walk at 1030pm, which we've decided is going to now be our annual tradition.

AcornAutumn · 01/01/2021 00:42

Lol at the sheep. Look at that moon!

I bet it's freezing but you are actually well hard compared to me! 😂❄️

AnyFucker · 01/01/2021 00:42

Thanks for the pics. Made me feel all cosy warm.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 01/01/2021 00:43

we went out to the garden with a whisky, to hear the boats in the harbour....it's not cold at all here suddenly, i had to loosen my scarf, take off my hat and undo my jacket

there was a single hooty hoot, lots of fireworks in the distance round and about, and cross geese flying about.

the dog was furious, he wanted to go to bed!
HAPPYNEWYEAR everyone!

That looks fab. I'm in bed now but wishing I'd actually walked the 5 minutes to the empty stretch of coast we're on instead of spending it with Jools Holland, a surly teen and a spaniel..

Next year!

Inextremis · 01/01/2021 00:48

Oh how lovely! I'm another rural dweller and I wish I'd thought of this - there's a path up to the woods behind us on the hill (our land is a bit flat). Too much vodka on board now to be safe - but will think about it for another night :) Glad you did it, OP, and HNY!

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 01/01/2021 00:54

Bloody ungrateful sheep!

I'm glad you enjoyed it & I'm glad you're home safe.

CausingChaos2 · 01/01/2021 01:00

Sounds wonderful. It wasn’t until I lived rurally that I started to appreciate the night sky and how infinite it is.

Katinthedoghouse · 01/01/2021 01:01

I’m back too.

Oh my word the descent was a bit skippy. OP I’ve just checked your username and I definitely could have been waving at you...we are in the same area wow!!!

Happy new year everyone

grassisjeweled · 01/01/2021 01:02

Just been for a walk myself, starry night, didn't see a soul

grassisjeweled · 01/01/2021 01:02

If you heard someone yelling HAPPY NEW YEAR on a deserted Lakeland fell and singing auld Lang syne badly on the descent then yes, that was me.

Sounds lovely, I went for a snowy 5km run. Running out of 2020 and into 2021 - I loved it.

The snowy moonlit track was beautiful and it was amazingly light!
