Keeping kids up for New Year

SleepingStandingUp · 31/12/2020 18:56

Will you be keeping yours up to see on the New Year? What age?

DS is 5 and will go to bed at usual time, is that mean? It's just us three and a couple of babies, it would be a nightmare keeping him entertained for an extra 5 hours getting increasingly tired and hyper

Dd is staying up if she can stay awake. She's 6.5.

Its entirely selfish of me as DH will probably go to bed and I don't want to sit up alone. Mind you, she is usually awake in bed at 10pm despite lights out at 7.30.Hmm

Learningtobehappier · 31/12/2020 19:51

We have my two, 3.5 and 8 (ADHD & ASD) who has gone to bed as normal. And my DP's 10 year old who is staying up, we'll have a take away and play board games

Pascha · 31/12/2020 19:51

I'm certainly not rushing my 10 and 7yo to bed but they won't be staying up indefinitely. I think maybe 8.30-9 is likely.

Dd5 going to bed in half an hour we had a party tea and she thinks that's it new year done haha. No point keeping them up when they don't fully understand ds12 is at his dads but yes he would stay up if home.

EsmeeMerlin · 31/12/2020 19:54

Both of mine have been able to stay up in previous years because we have usually been at a relative’s house with family and cousins playing together. This year my two year old went to bed at 7 and my 7 year old is still up to join in with a zoom quiz. I doubt he will still be awake at 12. Last time I let him stay up for a zoom quiz he fell asleep on the sofa at 9 and was carried to bed.

DuckonaBike · 31/12/2020 19:55

Mine might keep me up (11 and 13) - they want to be up for new year! I would rather go to bed as I’m tired, and also the sooner we go to sleep the sooner 2020 will be over.

Snowbored · 31/12/2020 20:15

Mine are 8&10. I suggested to DH we change all the clocks and let them stay up half an hour later than usual but he refused! They've just gone to sleep. DS wakes up before 6 no matter what time he goes to bed so would only be bad tempered for the next few days. Not worth it! We won't stay up either seeing as we'll be woken early.

HugeAckmansWife · 31/12/2020 21:30

My tweens want to stay up but I really can't be arsed. If they go to bed I can at least watch something decent. They never agree on a game or even a film so it ends up just all of us mooching about on different screens. What's the point. I'm giving them til ten to agree to something together and if they can't they go to bed.

Tiquismiquis · 31/12/2020 21:39

Mine went up at usual time. Doesn’t feel like there is a lot to celebrate this year really. Can’t even watch the fireworks at midnight so all seems a bit pointless for little ones.

DS (4) went to bed at usual the as he was past himself already. DD (7) just went to bed at 9.30. Think she probably could have gone on much later but I'm ready for bed myself! Wish I'd thought of the earlier countdown! Then again she can tell the time, so would probably just think I was being weird 😂

LBOCS2 · 31/12/2020 21:46

4yo DD2 is currently dancing around and singing Avril Lavigne on Rock Band 😁 DD1 (8) is waiting patiently for her turn. I'll put them to bed when they run out of steam, but at the moment they're more energetic than I am!

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 31/12/2020 21:48

Mine have stayed up from about 4 or 5. If they don’t make midnight we do a false midnight at whatever time they’re exhausted but from being five or so they have made midnight. We just play charades, board games etc and put juice in a champagne flute at midnight. One of my best childhood memories is how exciting it was staying up until midnight!

TheIrishRover · 31/12/2020 22:14

Kind of. We've never done it before but this year we decided to let them stay up. One is already asleep on my lap, one is on the phone to his mates and the other one is threatening to ruin my planned tele choices by wanting to watch shite on YouTube on the main tv Hmm

Figgygal · 31/12/2020 22:15

9 and 4 yo went to bed at 9
I’m going in 5 mins
Meh

SandAndFog · 31/12/2020 22:22

My 9 and 5 year old are hoping to stay up, both are doing fine and not too tired.

I'm Scottish so always stayed up for the bells so I suppose it's just something I'll get my kids to do.

Caesargeezer · 31/12/2020 22:24

Nope normal time for mine. I didn’t know anything about nye as a child but we had a second Christmas Day on New Year’s Day.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 31/12/2020 22:31

Mine have always been out with us at parties from about the age of 3 or 4. They usually fell asleep but managed to enjoy it more from 6 or 7.

Jellycatspyjamas · 31/12/2020 22:32

Mine have just gone up to bed they’re 7 and 9, we had planned to keep them up but they were falling asleep so we did a fake bells with child friendly fizz and packed them off to bed. My 7 year old was asleep by the time his head hit the pillow.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 31/12/2020 22:35

Harder to keep them up at home than out.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 31/12/2020 22:43

No chance am I keeping DS up, I need a break! Bed at 7.30 as usual, he's 7.

wendz86 · 31/12/2020 22:48

I always let mine stay up although they never make it to midnight . Eldest made it first time last year at 8 years old . They find it great fun and enjoy it .

MrsHugsxx · 31/12/2020 22:53

My 12 year old is staying up with us and has done for the past couple of years, younger kids go to bed normal time. No point keeping them up and they would be too tired.

LER83 · 31/12/2020 22:55

Normally we stay over at our friends house so the kids stay up as long as they can, I think last nye they managed 1am! They catch up on sleep on the 3 hour journey home. This year the 5 yr old fell asleep on my lap whilst watching a film about 9pm, and the 10 & 8 yr olds are watching the Simpson and trying very hard to stay awake. I've got a splitting headache and would rather be in bed!

Norwayreally · 31/12/2020 22:58

I let mine do it last year for the first time. Eldest was 9 and he took himself up to bed at 11 Grin, DD’s (7 and 8 last year) lasted till midnight. They’re all still up now, think even the eldest will make it till midnight this time. 2 year old went to bed as normal though.

They’ll hopefully have a lie in tomorrow so that’s a bonus!
