So no holidaying in the EU from tomorrow, unless our infection rate dramatically changes

Even if you can book a holiday to the EU, you won't be allowed to enter the EU.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-46627083

Because of Covid, travellers from most non-EU countries can't visit except for essential reasons.

After 31 December, the UK will no longer be treated like a member of the EU, so becomes subject to these rules.

The only non-EU countries exempt from these restrictions are those with very low infection rates, such as New Zealand.

Let's hope that things improve for this summer...

if we'd shut our borders months ago we might not be in this mess. Not because 'abroad' has more cases than us, (mostly it doesn't now) but because travelling spreads it.

realise how rubbish it is to lose a holiday - but it is action that should have been taken around March.

halcyondays · 31/12/2020 14:51

Tbh going on holidays is the least of our worries at the moment.

True - but I hope our rate comes down to an acceptable level by summer

Well it is not going so well for the EU either so it is a two way thing. Germany has more deaths than the UK lately btw.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 31/12/2020 15:21

Not a bad thing, we should have stopped all unnecessary travel in and out ages ago.

theotherfossilsister · 31/12/2020 16:17

My elderly parents are in France and I am desperate to see them once my dad's had the vaccine. He has pancreatic cancer and I'm willing to pay for tests, before travel and on arrival and self isolate both directions. I really hope I still can.

Mistigri · 31/12/2020 16:21

Borders will remain open to EU citizens and people with EU resident status, no?

SebastianTheCrab · 31/12/2020 16:22

There is so much more of the world to explore beyond Europe - and frankly it doesn't end up being significantly more expensive after flights because the Euro/UK exchange was never very favourable and Europe is expensive.

Open your mind a little.

Lairyfightzzzz · 31/12/2020 16:27

Haven't been abroad in 5 years now and don't intend on going any time soon either, as trying to reduce my carbon footprint.

chomalungma · 31/12/2020 16:32

Open your mind a little

Ummm. 3 months in Nepal.
India
Phillipines
Malaysia
Thailand
Australia
New Zealand
USA

Europe is also great though.

And I am looking forward to going back there.

Cool. So in the same way you were able to travel to Nepal, USA etc you'll be able to travel to Europe once the COVID situation calms down.

Not sure what all the hysteria is about.

SebastianTheCrab · 31/12/2020 16:37

Also a number of the infections I know of locally have come from people sneaking to and from Europe so frankly it might be a good thing.

chomalungma · 31/12/2020 16:40

Not sure what all the hysteria is about

I wonder how many people realise this that as we have left the EU, we won't be allowed to go there on holiday - until the R rate gets low. Yet EU citizens will be allowed to go to other parts of Europe on holiday.

Self isolating on return is a bit pointless if you aren't allowed in to the country.

OP posts:
Pancakeorcrepe · 31/12/2020 16:41

@chomalungma the UK has one of the highest rates of infection, people sneaking out and back in would be more likely to spread the virus in Europe rather than bring it to the UK. It’s already here!

As in the first wave, individual Eu countries are able to close their borders to whomever they like, EU countries included, so it really makes no difference. Remember the travel corridors?
JayAlfredPrufrock · 31/12/2020 16:44

I don’t think anyone should be going on holiday at the moment.

rollinggreenhills · 31/12/2020 16:44

Only a raving nutcase would want to go on a foreign holiday in the middle of a global pandemic.

NeedWineNow · 31/12/2020 16:46

Yeah right. Wait until they realise how much they are losing from British tourism and then see them change their tune.

Lairyfightzzzz · 31/12/2020 16:47

OK but why would you want to go abroad at the moment anyway?!

I'm sure the Costa Del Sol will cope somehow.
Lairyfightzzzz · 31/12/2020 16:50

For an emergency maybe. But a holiday? I'd assume anyone who did that before February was either insane or stupid or both.

TheReluctantPhoenix · 31/12/2020 16:51

We have possibly got a highly infectious new strain of Covid here (though behaviour has also been shocking). We definitely have a ridiculously high rate of infection now.

I don’t believe that, regardless of Brexit, the EU would have allowed us in. Borders were closed between EU nations in the first wave.

More to the point, why would you want to risk spreading a dangerous variant outside our own borders?

When Covid comes under control. I would wanted £5 to £1 that many countries will open very fast lanes for U.K. travellers. Our tourism has great value to them.

TheReluctantPhoenix · 31/12/2020 16:51

Wager not wanted

Dollywilde · 31/12/2020 16:53

@HibernatingTill2030 I’ve never been to the CDS but tbf we’re talking about people’s livelihoods and many of those people will suffer if british holidaymakers can’t visit. It’s not something to crow about, it’s a desperately sad situation.
