So no holidaying in the EU from tomorrow, unless our infection rate dramatically changes

Even if you can book a holiday to the EU, you won't be allowed to enter the EU.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-46627083

Because of Covid, travellers from most non-EU countries can't visit except for essential reasons.

After 31 December, the UK will no longer be treated like a member of the EU, so becomes subject to these rules.

The only non-EU countries exempt from these restrictions are those with very low infection rates, such as New Zealand.

Let's hope that things improve for this summer...

For an emergency maybe. But a holiday? I'd assume anyone who did that before February was either insane or stupid or both

People from the UK have been going on holiday to Europe.

(FWIW I don’t dispute that no one should be going on holiday, and that the EU should have every right to enforce its borders. But ‘I’m sure the Costa Del Sol will cope’ aren’t very fair)

blacksax · 31/12/2020 16:56

I am sure some people from the UK will be wanting to go abroad to Europe soon

Oh - fuckwits, you mean?

I think it’s for the best anyway. We need to spend the money in this country and build the economy back here.

GabsAlot · 31/12/2020 17:09

good stop people travelling a bit spreading it round

Lairyfightzzzz · 31/12/2020 17:11

Well they won't be now.

Not really sure what the point of this thread was tbh Confused

Northernsoullover · 31/12/2020 17:13

I'm desperate to go on holiday but no way at the moment. Its irresponsible for a start and secondly imagine having covid in a foreign country! No thanks.

And frankly every single one of them is fucking stupid. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should

It’s a bit of a poor attempt at a stealth anti Brexit thread.

Ultimately countries can close their borders to whoever they want, other EU countries included. People from the UK being prevented from travelling to the EU has nothing to do with Brexit and everything to do with the fact we have a new variant of COVID which, while is already present in Europe, is spreading very quickly and frankly no other country should be wanting it spread even quicker if they can help it.

I’ve no doubt that one day people will want to travel to Europe again. By that time figures will hopefully be down and they will be able to do so.

This isn’t news.

It's just reminding people that there are things that Europeans can do that we can't now.

*Lairyfightzzzz

OK but why would you want to go abroad at the moment anyway?!*

Ok anecedata but DH and I have both had the 1st Pzfiezer jab and DCs have been isolating since term finished, they are not back till the 18th. If I could I would teleport us to our apartment in the French Alps.

HibernatingTill2030 · 31/12/2020 17:35

It's not really an anti-Brexit thread 9I say that as a staunch retainer, BTW).
Individual EU countries have always had control over their borders- despite claims to the contary. Quite a lot of EU countries closed the borders to us just before Christmas and we were still in the EU transition period then.
Couple of EU-member states have border controls in place at the moment with other countries, too:

No evidence that the vaccine stops you spreading it.

happystone · 31/12/2020 17:37

We can’t travel to newzeland. They have a very good leader

happystone · 31/12/2020 17:38

Maybe borris can gaslight the eu like he has his own country

hopefulhalf · 31/12/2020 17:42

I know, I am not going to France. But I would if it were allowed.....

Greysparkles · 31/12/2020 18:01

Because of covid.
Not brexit

And BTW we are still in europe, ergo... European....

@rollinggreenhills

Only a raving nutcase would want to go on a foreign holiday in the middle of a global pandemic.
Quite Grin this did make me smile.
