What age for Marvel films?

NeedDrivewayHelp · 30/12/2020 17:22

Just that really. They’re all 12a or more and I know some are really, really not suitable for younger children.

However DC is 7 and I think that he may enjoy some of the MCU. I’m thinking Spider-Man or Guardians?

Not keen on bad language or gory/realistic violence

Thoughts, MN?

These aren’t made with children in mind, but if you look up possible films on IMDB you can see the parents guide with a breakdown on topic areas of gore, language, sex etc
You will find some ratings to be overly conservative & Puritan and others totally unsuitable for him.

It’s worthwhile checking the ratings lists for different countries as well.

Of course, bear in mind that there may be different versions of a film in different countries or between cinema, DVD and TV

Only you can make the call of how far you will stretch an age rating to your child
If in doubt then watch first yourself (without them knowing to avoid their expectations)

It’s frustrating when all merchandising etc is aimed at children then the movies are 12A. Husband doesn’t like marvel so won’t watch films in advance 🤐

I use common sense media. 7 is too young for marvel / avengers.

It's a frustrating age as there's lots of film they'd like to see but just too young.

My nearly 7yo wants to watch gremlins and I'm not letting him as I can't be doing with the nightmares. Did let him watch raiders of the lost ark yesterday but shielded his eyes at the end as it would have been too scary to watch someone melt!!

Fuckstickss · 31/12/2020 17:07

Hmm, maybe Ant man? I love Marvel but I think he's a bit too young.

Tbh I was traumatised by most of them and cried all the way through Endgame and I'm 37.

PumpkinHat · 31/12/2020 17:11

I get what you're saying OP. All the merch is aimed at kids, I can even get plenty of merchandise for my 2 year old! But they cant watch the films. Doesn't make sense. What about the cartoon spiderman etc on disney+?

1980sljm · 31/12/2020 17:11

My boys have been watching marvel films since about 7.

RedskyAtnight · 31/12/2020 17:12

Have a look here: www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/marvel-age-by-age-guide

12 films are not suitable for a 7 year old, no matter how many people tell you that their younger children watch them. Otherwise they would be given a PG certificate.

alltheadrenalin · 31/12/2020 17:13

What about the Lego versions?

MardyBicardi · 31/12/2020 17:14

My dts started watching marvel films around the age of 7. They really got into Star Wars then too.
I always checked things out on parents guide Imbd, I really like this as it breaks everything down for you so that you can make a decision.
We decided against Dr Strange based on parents guide as it is more gory than the other films. They really enjoyed guardians of the galaxy though.
Honestly, have a read on imbd about the swearing, nudity and violence in the films and you can make a decision that works for you.

AreyouthereGoditsme · 31/12/2020 17:20

I let my youngest watch them from the age of your child. Most were fine but I found the violence in Guardians worse. Definitely not Batman, I thought they were much more violent.

DS started watching them at 8.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 31/12/2020 17:22

Watch the Lego versions of the movies, pretty much the same story lines but without the realistic violence etc.

You really do need to watch them before hand, I've tried to watch a couple with Dd but there were parts, particularly at the beginning which I had forgotten, Black panther starts with a terrorist attack, another starts at a German concentration camp etc.
Aqua man is the only one I think we've seen that I've been happy with.
Not marvel but Dd loved Shazaam.

DD was fine with the Harry Potter movies from a fairly young age but the violence in Marvel and transformers is more realistic, guns instead of wands etc and seems less appropriate even though they are the same certificate.

TammyTwoSwanson · 31/12/2020 17:29

Just be careful with Guardians of the Galaxy 2. The opening scene made my 6 year old throw up.

Nohomemadecandles · 31/12/2020 17:30

I think Capt A and Iron Man are ok. And Avengers.
We've started this year with an almost 10 & 8.5 year old.
Not doing the very recent ones yet.

Flywheel · 31/12/2020 17:33

DS started watching when he was around 8. He's 10 now and has seen them all. He's very sensitive and other movies upset him (e.g. men in black, the witches) but he's been fine with all the marvel movies.

Cbeebiesismyworld · 31/12/2020 17:34

My just turned 8 year old loves all things Marvel, he’s been watching the films for the past year or so. He’s not of a sensitive disposition though!

PrincessScarlett · 31/12/2020 17:46

My 8 year old has watched all the Marvel films and loves them. There is the odd swear word but nothing too outrageous (the XMen films are a lot worse for swearing and violence). Some of the films are a little darker than others. The iron man films are a bit hard going for a 7 year old. Agree that Captain America, Spiderman and Ant Man are probably more child friendly. We started with Thor Ragnorak which was superb. The die hard fans will tell you there is a correct order to watch them in, and a lot of the films are all interlinked, but they are also good stand alone.

MardyBicardi · 31/12/2020 17:48

Shazam is amazing, it’s a brilliant film. It’s got a few scary bits in it though.
We’ve always had a rule that if something is too much for the dc that they speak up, we will change it straight away and watch something fluffy. We have turned films off halfway through a few times but they’ve never had bad dreams from them.

QuentinInQuarantino · 31/12/2020 18:55

I'm watching them with my seven year old. There's some violence which we cover his eyes for but it's not every film. The dr strange one I think was worst for that. The main thing is the language - it does swear.

CanICelebrate · 31/12/2020 19:17

My older boys were 10 and 12 when they started watching them but my youngest starting watching them at 8!

NeedDrivewayHelp · 31/12/2020 19:38

What’s Shazam?! I’ve never heard of it!

Soubriquet · 31/12/2020 19:41

My 5 year old and 7 year old have watched several and enjoy them.
