DRY JANUARY 2021! This way please... all welcome

It’s that time of year again... the late Christmas present to our livers!

You may be thinking of doing Dry January to:

*detox a little after seasonal overindulgence, or
*help you cut down a bit generally, or
*help you start to get out of a harmful alcohol habit, or
*just be a bit healthier for a month...

It’s good for all of those things!

I find the MN DJ threads excellent for support, encouragement, sharing info,‘we’re in this together’ camaraderie, suggestions for grown up drinks, aversion techniques and just fun.

This is my fourth year of DJ and I swear it has made all the difference to me; it was so hard first time, but having succeeded I did dry June and October after that, and do so every year. It has broken my habit, banished the craving and reset my relationship with booze.

I won’t be finding DJ too difficult this year, but some will. Hopefully this thread will help.

Come climb aboard the wagon! 🙂☕️🧃

Still going here too. Day 13 and all good. Am enjoying the mental break from making the decision whether to open the wine or have an AF day. Knowing it's off the table is really helping me.

Definitely lost my wine bloat on my face but no improvement in rosacea yet so hoping it isn't triggered by alcohol so I can still enjoy wine (moderated of course Grin) after DJ! Not lost any weight really, the odd pound or so but have also stopped mainlining cheese since Christmas so that's probably helped too!

Definitely sleeping better - someone on a previous DJ thread a few years back described it as pillowy, fluffy type deep sleep and that's exactly how it feels. Genuine rest. Usually I only get that a couple nights a week at best and even then it's patchy so this is feeling like a real luxury!

This is the feeling I need to remember when I want to drain a bottle of wine on a weekend night. The sleep feels like just as much of a treat!

All this said I'm looking forward to DH birthday on 27th already as we said we'd have some champagne and then go dry again for a spell afterwards. Also it's another two weeks of lockdown done so that's spurring me on too a bit I guess!

Impatientwino · 13/01/2021 23:45

Oh am also eating all the chocolate and the biscuits Confused

katmarie · 14/01/2021 07:31

Love the image of washing machine strictly!! Day 14, and I came on yesterday. Normally that would have me reaching for the wine but I've held fast. I'm telling myself I will feel better for it.

I'm managing to stick to 16:8 alongside the DJ, which is limiting the snacking I would normally be tempted to do. Part of me wonders what the hell I think I'm doing, but I reckon I'm going to manage it.

Therainisback · 14/01/2021 08:00

Day 14. Happy Birthday MaCake

TartanTed · 14/01/2021 08:52

Day 13 here. I thought it would be easier this year as no socialising... how naive! Lockdown is way tougher. Determined to stick with it though. Sleeping better and no fuzzy head in the morning. No weight loss due to homeschooling stress induced snacking but my liver must be loving it.

Plonque · 14/01/2021 10:49

Good morning! Day 14 for me, damn near halfway 🎉

Happy Birthday @dementedma, I hope you have a lovely day.

Nothing to report. Boring as hell here. I think I've finally finished the last of the Christmas crap, found a rogue packet of mint matchmakers last night and some fancy popcorn. Which I inhaled, naturally.
I should have been going on a lovely city mini break today, my calendar alerts keep flashing it at me. Bastards.

buzzofthebumblebee · 14/01/2021 11:41

Hope you have a lovely birthday @dementedma Daffodil

Day 14 here too. Bored. About to make a coffee. Had to share the excitement.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 14/01/2021 11:45

Day 14 for me today! Only another three weekends to go...
When I get to February I am quite determined not to go back to my old ways- going to make sure I measure out and count my units and keep well below the recommended.

TarnishedSilver · 14/01/2021 11:50

Has anyone tried CBT or hypnosis to change their attitude to alcohol? I did hypnosis a few years ago - it didn't work for me - but it had a huge effect on a friend - despite her being very cynical - after listening to the recording she really didn't feel like drinking - started a GnT but couldn't finish it - very unlike her!😂 You have to keep listening to the recording though.

dementedma · 14/01/2021 11:54

Thanks all. Trying to ignore the gin related gifts received...

SnoopyMcLoopy · 14/01/2021 12:41

@pointythings I'm also doing 16:8 along with Fast 800. How's it going? Def stops the snacking and also helps with the temptation for wine!

pointythings · 14/01/2021 13:27

SnoopyMcLoopy I'm loving it, 2.5 stone down since September and it just feels so doable.

Tazers · 14/01/2021 18:26

Just wanted to mention that a friend sent me a link to a website called Hello Sunday Morning. There are loads of helpful articles on how to quit, what to expect, how to manage triggers.

Labobo · 14/01/2021 18:41

@Dugee and @ilovetomatoes me too. I've actually put on two pounds. Sad Even though I'm back at bootcamp. I think the alcohol actually curbs my carb cravings normally. I am snacking for England. Not hit the nutella jar neat yet but now the idea has been planted Grin

SnoopyMcLoopy · 14/01/2021 18:48

@pointythings WOW! That's amazing well done.

LostaraYil · 14/01/2021 19:02

Happy birthday @dementedma.
Just got today's teacup at 7pm. No alcohol, but I feel like I have had litres and litres of tea and water, now on the slimline tonic. Is anyone else constantly thirsty?! It's a good thing I guess, and the non stop trips to the toilet must be burning some calories too...

thinkofablinkingnamewoman · 14/01/2021 19:21

I feel seen lostara. Am trying to up my water intake and am a big tea and coffee drinker anyway. Am working from the kitchen table and going up to the loo every 10 minutes (only slightly exaggerated!) I musy have climbed half an alp today. Am hoping to see some difference in my face at some point.

Happy birthday *dementedma8!

How far through are we now?

BrassicaBabe · 14/01/2021 19:37

Nutella jar? You need biscoff spread in your life! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️(I'm also "low carb" 😩)

ilovetomatoes · 14/01/2021 19:54

@Labobo can totally understand that. I think for me when I know I’m drinking in the evening I’m a bit more careful during the day to compensate. Also now I’m so bored that food has become my main source of pleasure. I’m going to relax about it for the next couple of days and then smash it next week. I did fast 800 last year and lost loads so I’m planning to do that for the rest of January to shift those pounds!

CrystalE · 14/01/2021 20:05

Yippee. New Years Eve drinking binge has dropped off my app chart. So now it is all pristine and sober looking.
Its my day off tomorrow. Felt some pangs for a glass of something delicious this evening. Then I found a minature of brandy left over from Xmas - I could have drunk it but I know that it wouldn't hit the spot and would just be drinking for drinking's sake.

Am going to pour myself a glass of naice tonic and watch some more of the Crown, am about 3 series behind everyone else in the world

CrystalE · 14/01/2021 20:08

Family are all moaning about lack of cake due to restricted no of items in online shop.

Might make some muffins tomorrow - domestic goddess that I am. Queue opportunity for handmixer/ food processor (which is about 30 years old) to go wrong.

ShellieEllie · 14/01/2021 20:42

Day 14 here. I'll be glad when this weekend is over, will be on the downhill run then. Sleeping much better but oh my, the anxiety is through the roof :(

AldiIsla · 14/01/2021 20:44

I've lost half a stone. Fuck knows where from.
Still dry.

We must be nearly halfway, we're going to make it.
