How many calories do you burn in an hour walking.

I'm just looking over my steps app and I'm disappointed to note I've burnt 151 calories in an hour's walk at a moderate pace. This is the equivalent of a small glass of white wine.
I'm wondering how this rates compared to everyone else.

it's dissapointingly little.
a 5k (30 min) run is only about 300 cals. that's half an adult dinner portion.

vanillandhoney · 28/12/2020 19:36

Nowhere near as many as you'd think!

I'm a dog walker and regularly go out for 5-6 hours a day and the number of calories I burn is surprisingly small.

NoSensei · 28/12/2020 19:41

I just burnt 189 cals in a 26 minute walk which is about average for me. I walk quite fast but not a power walk by any means. I’m overweight by about 3 stone though

@beela

Isn't it about 100 calories per mile, whether walking or running?
Yup, that's my rule of thumb. Probably drops to about 80 if you amble along at a 2.5mph pace, maybe goes up a bit if you're physically capable of churning out 7 minute miles, but for most of us 100 is not a bad guess.

The thing to remember though is that you have to subtract off your base line metabolic rate - what you'd have burned off sitting on the couch.

It's the 80- 20 rule - weight loss is 80% eating sensibly and healthily, 20% exercise. Which isn't to say don't bother with exercise - it's great for cardiovascular health, bone density, etc. It's just not enough to help you lose weight on its own (unless you're doing pro athlete levels of training).

All fitness monitors tend to greatly overestimate calories burnt unfortunately, especially fitbits. I have been told by a personal trainer and my NHS Dietrician that you should halve the calories burnt for fitbit for an accurate figure.

About 250 for me, for just over 2.5 miles. A small glass of white wine (125ml) is usually just under 100kCals, so you should get one and a half glasses for your walk 😁

BogRollBOGOF · 28/12/2020 20:08

100 cals per mile is a rough guide.
Bad news for me, I'm small and fit so come in lower than that.
Running allows you to fit more miles into the time (6mph is a good mid-range pace)
Brisk walking 3-4 mph.
Strolling about 2mph.

ThePricklySheep · 28/12/2020 20:11

Do you know how far you walked, OP? That does seem low. But maybe you don’t weigh very much.

SufferingFromLongLockdown · 28/12/2020 20:30

About 2.5 miles. Measured on Samsung watch. I noticed when I swapped from Fitbit that it estimated calorie burn a bit lower but seems more accurate. I think someone mentioned that it deducts what you'd burn normally from what is additionally burnt through exercise.
I'm 5ft 4 and 9 stone 9

I find that I am losing weight consistently by tracking calories eaten on my Fitbit whilst using its estimate of calories burned to create a 500cal+ deficit so it's accurate enough for me.

I think it helps to try and see exercise as an end in itself as well. It makes you stronger and protects against dementia, inflammation, heart disease, cancer, boosts mental health - it's just brilliant, and you get those benefits whether you also lose weight or not. I feel so much better in every way since I started walking every day.
