How many calories do you burn in an hour walking.

I'm just looking over my steps app and I'm disappointed to note I've burnt 151 calories in an hour's walk at a moderate pace. This is the equivalent of a small glass of white wine.
I'm wondering how this rates compared to everyone else.

I did an hour this morning and it was 424 (Fitbit) prob due to my weight even tho I'm quite fit I'm very heavy for my size

banivani · 28/12/2020 18:21

I use Runkeeper on and off and according to that I burned 477 for a one hour ten minute walk last month.

TheChosenTwo · 28/12/2020 18:24

Just checked my app, my walk was 1hr 25 minutes today and I burned 498 calories! It was a moderate paced walk with the kids, not fast, not a dawdle.

I do 20 minutes on the treadmill every day which equates to 100 calories and 1 mile. I am walking at 3.5 mph up and down hills. Not sure how you can burn over 400 calories in an hour when walking.

H1978 · 28/12/2020 18:40

It depends on the pace of your walk but that amount sounds right because that’s what my Apple Watch records. It really isn’t a lot.

PlugUgly1980 · 28/12/2020 18:47

1.2 miles and a 155 calories here, that's for a steady plod along with the kids.

I did 10k / 6.2 miles on the treadmill this morning in 53 minutes and burnt 573 calories. Both measured using my Garmin with wrist based heart rate monitor.

Does depend on your starting weight and fitness level. I'm under 9 st and a reasonable level of fitness.

SufferingFromLongLockdown · 28/12/2020 18:48

It's disappointing. My calorie burn in an average day without going for a walk is under 1400 calories, way below recommended calorie intake for women.

Isn't it about 100 calories per mile, whether walking or running?

doctorhamster · 28/12/2020 18:51

I have a regular 1.5 hour walk I do that burns just over 600 calories. I'm about 5 stone overweight though.

StanfordPines · 28/12/2020 18:52

I walk every day for just shy of an hour and exactly 3 miles.
According to my Apple Watch it’s about 300 calories, but then I go quite quickly.

Bargebill19 · 28/12/2020 18:52

In a working day I do between 20 - 23k steps and burn between 2,800 - 3,100 calories according to my garmin. Don’t know if that helps?

NiceGerbil · 28/12/2020 18:53

Hardly any, sadly.

The human body is very efficient which was in our favour in the past and works against us now.

CookieDoughKid · 28/12/2020 18:55

To get your metabolism up and burn more calories try to do run/walks. Run fast enough till your out of breath ...then move to a moderate walk...1minute run/ 2 min walk. You need to feel challenged. Otherwise your body will just adapt and tries not to burn as much calories.

SlingBackWellies · 28/12/2020 18:56

Try Pilates, I managed 397 calories for a sixty minute session, never manage that when walking.

CookieDoughKid · 28/12/2020 18:56

Exactly what nicegerbil said. Your body tries to be as efficient as possible.

PurBal · 28/12/2020 19:04

Depends on how fast. It's around 100 calories per mile depending on how much you weigh. So 300-400 at a moderate pace.

Pipandmum · 28/12/2020 19:06

A rough guide is 100 cal per mile. Adjust for wright.

Franticbutterfly · 28/12/2020 19:06

I did just over 3 miles on the treadmill this morning in 65 minutes my Fitbit said I'd burnt 473kcals (I had it on a very slight incline).

Pipandmum · 28/12/2020 19:06

Or weight rather. And terrain.

Franticbutterfly · 28/12/2020 19:08

I should add that I'm 14.5st though.

Chamonixshoopshoop · 28/12/2020 19:10

I'm always disappointed with my calories burnt Op!
Mine says 210 for a 1-hour walk. I only weigh 48 kg so I burn hardly anything.

Even when I run a 45 minute 10 k (real lung burner) it ends up being about 350. My fitbit says I can only eat 1300 calories on a normal day (not dieting! just normal!).

HCPor · 28/12/2020 19:10

The Fitbit counts just living and breathing calories as well.

That's why it seems more when walking.

OP, yours will 'just' be counting the extra calories you burned (which would be zero if you were sat down for an hour but not zero for a Fitbit).

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 28/12/2020 19:13

I also burn about 400 cals an hour walking. I'm also pretty heavy (though fit) and walking is my main exercise so I try to hit fat burning/cardio zones (measured with my Fitbit) heart rate wise. Does your app work with something that measures your heart rate? If not it may be underestimating.

Thorilicious · 28/12/2020 19:18

I did a 1 mile walk/run this morning, and burnt about 100 cals

DeadCertain · 28/12/2020 19:21

Isn't it about 100 calories per mile, whether walking or running? Sadly not, I am a relatively speedy and efficient runner - the more efficient the fewer calories I burn....although challenging trail is much harder work than road, so can burn more then!!

Just being sedentary I only burn about 1550 per day - I am about 168cm and around 59kg at present. I aim to burn an extra 1000 - 1500 per day in activity, but it takes a surprising amount to get there!!!
