My lovely friend had her beautiful baby boy last night. They've not put anything on social media yet so I thought I'd ask here! I want to get her a few little bits that I can leave on the doorstep. I made her a hamper a month back but I'd like to get some little bits for baby now we know he's a boy.

So, what did somebody buy for your baby that you absolutely loved?
And also, what would have loved to/did you receive that was useful/thoughtful/unexpected but loved?

I'm so excited for them and also so disappointed that I can't offer more support thanks to bloody Covid! Not that I'd push it on them anyway of course! But I just want her to know I'm here and thinking of her if she needs anything

I'd go with a voucher for Amazon/h&m sort of thing let her buy stuff herself I missed out on choosing stuff for my little one

byebyeboyee · 27/12/2020 19:22

And myself I wore clothes too large for my body for 3 years!

mathanxiety · 27/12/2020 19:25

A stainless steel thermal mug for the mum to keep tea or coffee hot for her. Cold tea and coffee is the bane of the newborn days.

I baked a lemon drizzle loaf cake for friends who had babies and it's gone down really well, one friend still comments now!

MaizeBlouse · 27/12/2020 19:30

DONT BUY FLOWERS!! I had a few well meaning friends buy me some, and whilst they are certainly pretty, taking the time to find a vase and arrange them and then later dispose of them wasn't worth it in my opinion.

Yes to food but the best stuff I received was snack food for in the night. Stuff that doesn't easily spill or make crumbs like gummy worms, individually wrapped chocolate bars or chewy granola bars. These give you a bit of a pep in the night but there's just a wrapper to get rid of. A friend bought me some champagne and snelly cheese which was great as she knows I love it and missed drinking abd eating it.

DS1 was a sicky baby so muslins were v gratefully received but with DS2 I just wanted someone to come over and clean my house and look after DS1. Though I appreciate that isn't possible right now.

Depends on what you’re wanting to spend but the things we’ve used a lot of or I really like have been-

  • tuppence and crumble star blanket (using one that my eldest had- they’re great!)
  • myhummy bear
  • record book
  • Prosecco
  • Amazon vouchers (I read my kindle during the night feeds)
Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 27/12/2020 19:42

I recommend a Cook voucher so she can get some delicious healthy food delivered for those days when she's too tired to cook for herself

DaffodilsAndDandelions · 27/12/2020 19:44

Yellow metanium and sudocrem! Both will be needed so it won't matter how many she already has

RowanAlong · 27/12/2020 19:46

Ooh good one. Lansinoh, a couple of home-cooked meals, snacks like dried fruit, choc, nuts, cereal bars, then giant muslins, nice shower gel, warm socks, pashmina, a voucher for letting her choose baby stuff, and the phone number for breastfeeding support group!

Staffy1 · 27/12/2020 19:46

A lovely fluffy little blanket that converts into a sort of hooded dressing gown with strategically placed poppers. It's still in perfect condition and still used as a leg warming blanket 13 years later.

Ori2021 · 27/12/2020 19:47

Second Ewan the Sheep! And some nice luxury things for mum. Comfortable lounging clothes, ready meals, and/or treats that she likes to eat. Lavender oils for the bath.

caringcarer · 27/12/2020 19:48

An electric over blanket that she could use when might feeding. It is going to get cold. Offer to do a.big shop and put away for her. Vouchers for Chinese takeaway meal or pizza.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 27/12/2020 19:52

Thank you all! I'd love to be able to go and clean and cook for her, hold baby while she showers etc. But unfortunately we can't mix. But these ideas are great so thanks Grin

A tuppence and crumble star wrap has been great!

Moonandstars25 · 27/12/2020 19:57

I know people have said travel mug but what I found great was one of the water bottles with a straw. I’m not a tea drinker though. I found that way easier to drink from then one you need to tip up as DS would only feed in one position initially.
Another saying no to flowers- it was stressful trying to put them in water etc.
My favourite for DS was a little book of black and white images and a mirror which was great for tummy time.

MadeForThis · 27/12/2020 20:08

An extra long phone charging cable.

lemonsquashie · 27/12/2020 21:36

They won't need anything

We were given so many blankets, clothes, sleep shots, teddies. It was overwhelming

Oh the fluffy bit of fleece/cloth with an animal attached x 5 or 6. Dunno what they're even for.

Somebody sent me a basket of homemade cakes and muffins. I lived off that for about a week. Food that's a good idea

PanannyPanoo · 27/12/2020 21:42

@PanannyPanoo

A baby nightie. So much easier than sleep suits for night changes.

This is the sort of thing, they are brilliant.

MoChridhe · 27/12/2020 21:50

My best friend had her first at the end of November. I bought loads for the baby, clothes, sweaters, muslims, blankets, soft toys etc. I bought friend some breastfeeding vests and dresses.

mathanxiety · 27/12/2020 21:54

That would be a lovey.
They are basically a cross between a blankie and a favourite stuffed animal. Best to have a set of identical ones so you can wash them occasionally.

Definitely buying two of the same of these for baby! It's the end of the world if it gets lost. My eldest had 5 of her bedtime bears in the end "just in case" Grin

I wouldn't have put any of my babies in that especially in the winter, sleepsuits were much better to keep feet warm

whereisthejoy · 27/12/2020 22:34

This saved my back... I used it as a back support while feeding rather than how it's designed to be used

Mammyloveswine · 27/12/2020 22:36

My favourite gift was an m&s dine in! I was breastfeeding and knackered and it was just lovely to have a bit of a treat that didn't take an age to cook!

BrowncoatWaffles · 27/12/2020 22:40

Pate, cheese (all the stinky stuff) and French bread was the best gift I got after giving birth.

And an untippable insulated travel mug that meant my tea stayed warm for hours.

Agree that everyone will be treating the baby. My friend who sent me those bits has no idea how often I think about it even six years on. I still use the mug too (although it’s less essential now!)
